3. Die Kindheit des Marquis de Sade.
Der zweite Juni des Jahres 1740 war der Tag, an welchem einer
der merkwürdigsten Menschen des 18. Jahrhunderts, ja der
modernen Menschheit überhaupt, das Licht der Welt erblickte. Es
war im Hause des grossen Condé, wo Donatien Alphonse François,
Marquis[483] de Sade geboren wurde: der Philosoph des Lasters, der
„professeur de crime“, wie ihn Michelet und nach ihm Taine genannt
haben. Als 4jähriges Kind kam er zu seiner Grossmutter nach
Avignon, in die sonnige Provence, einige Jahre darauf in die Abtei
Ebreuil zu seinem Oheim, der ihn mit Sorgfalt erzog und ihm den
ersten Unterricht erteilte, bis er im Jahre 1750 im Collège Louis-le-
Grand in der Rue Saint-Jacques in Paris untergebracht wurde.
Dieses Unterrichtsinstitut galt für das beste in Frankreich und
gewährte seinen Schülern die Möglichkeit einer gründlichen und
vielseitigen Ausbildung. Sie mussten öffentliche Vorträge halten,
Theaterstücke aufführen, Disputationen veranstalten u. s. w. Man
nahm mehr Rücksicht auf den Geist als auf den Körper, der sich
zudem bei der sehr häufigen Anwendung der Prügelstrafe nicht
besonders wohl fühlen konnte.[484]
Auf jene Periode beziehen sich verschiedene Schilderungen der
Persönlichkeit des Knaben Sade, die alle wenig verbürgt sind. Nach
Uzanne[485] war er zu dieser Zeit ein „anbetungswürdiger Jüngling,
mit zartem, blassem Gesicht, aus dem zwei grosse schwarze Augen
hervorleuchteten.“ Aber schon war um sein ganzes Wesen eine
Atmosphäre des Lasters verbreitet, die seine Umgebung mit ihrem
giftigen Hauche verpestete und um so gefährlicher war, als das Kind
eine unwillkürliche Sympathie durch eine fast „weibliche Anmut“
einflösste. Lacroix verleiht ihm eine „zierliche Figur, blaue Augen und
blonde, schön frisierte Haare.“[486] Ein deutscher Autor ergeht sich in
folgenden Phantasien: „Der junge Vicomte war von so
aussergewöhnlicher Schönheit, dass alle Damen, die ihn erblickten,
selbst als er noch ein Knabe war, stehen blieben, um ihn zu
bewundern. Mit seinem reizenden Aeussern verband er eine
natürliche Anmut in allen seinen Bewegungen und sein Organ war
so wohlklingend, dass schon seine Stimme allen Frauen ins Innerste
ihres Herzens dringen musste. Sein Vater liess ihn stets nach der
neusten Mode gekleidet einhergehen, und die damalige
Rococotracht hob die glänzende Erscheinung des jungen Mannes
noch mehr hervor. Wer weiss, ob der Verfasser der Justine und
Juliette unter anderen Verhältnissen ein solcher Ausbund von
Verruchtheit geworden und ob er den Damen so sehr aufgefallen
wäre in der geschmacklosen Tracht unseres Zeitalters.“[487]
Richtig ist wohl nur, dass der Marquis de Sade wenigstens als
Jüngling eine angenehme Erscheinung war. Leider existiert kein
authentisches Porträt von ihm. In einem um 1840 veröffentlichten
kleinen Werke „Les fous célèbres“ findet sich eine sehr schlechte
Lithographie, die den Marquis de Sade darstellen soll, aber ein
blosses Phantasieprodukt ist. Zwei weitere Porträts wurden in
Brüssel zu Tage gefördert. Das eine, sehr schlecht ausgeführte,
befindet sich in einem ovalen Rahmen und soll aus der Sammlung
des Herrn de la Porte stammen.[488] Das andere, sehr gute Bild,
stellt den Marquis von Dämonen umgeben dar, die ihm ins Ohr
blasen, trägt die Bezeichnung „H. Biberstein sc.“ und soll aus der
Sammlung eines Herrn H*** in Paris stammen.[489] Es existieren
auch lithographische Nachbildungen desselben, von denen der
Verfasser der Recension der ersten Auflage des vorliegenden
Werkes in der „Zeitschrift für Bücherfreunde“ (1900 Nr. 2/3 S. 122)
eine sah.
Nach ihm ist dies Bild ein Phantasieprodukt aus viel späterer
Zeit.
In welcher geistigen Verfassung der Marquis de Sade das
Collège Louis-le-Grand verlassen hat, wissen wir ebenfalls nicht.
Nach jenem deutschen Autor, der das Leben Sade’s mit kühner
Phantasie aus seinen Büchern construiert, war „der junge Mann seit
frühester Kindheit ein Bücherwurm und gründete sich so zu sagen
ein eigenes philosophisches System auf ausgebreiteter
epikuräischer Basis. Neben seinen Schulstudien lag er den schönen
Künsten ob; er war ein tüchtiger Musiker, gewandter Tänzer, Fechter
und versuchte sich auch in Bildhauerei. Er brachte ganze Tage in
den Gemäldegallerien, namentlich in jenen des Louvre, von
Fontainebleau und Versailles zu, wodurch sein künstlerischer
Geschmack immer mehr ausgebildet wurde.“ Dass Sade die Musik
sehr liebte, bestätigt Paul Lacroix[490], und dass er die
Gemäldegallerien besuchte, bestätigt die Beschreibung der
Gemäldesammlung in Florenz (Juliette IV, 19 ff.).
Janin meint, dass Sade schon als ein „Fanatiker des Lasters“ die
Schule verlassen habe, in demselben Jahre (1754) als Maximilian de
Robespierre in dieselbe eintrat.[491]
4. Die Jugendzeit.
Nach dem Austritt aus dem Gymnasium trat der Marquis de Sade
in das Regiment der Chevaux-Legers ein, wurde dann
Unterlieutenant beim Königsregiment, Lieutenant bei den
Carabiniers und zuletzt Capitän in einem Kavallerieregiment, bei
welchem er den siebenjährigen Krieg in Deutschland mitmachte. Er
soll nach Lacroix[492] erst im Jahre 1766 nach Paris zurückgekehrt
sein, wo sein Vater, der ihm „mehrere Jugendthorheiten“ zum
Vorwurf machte, ihn zu verheiraten suchte. Marciat[493] hat
nachgewiesen, dass Sade bereits im Jahre 1763 wieder in Paris war.
In der im Mai 1880 in Paris verkauften Autographensammlung von
Michelet aus Bordeaux, befand sich ein Brief des Marquis de Sade,
datiert Vincennes den 2. November 1763, in dem als der Tag seiner
Heirat der 17. Mai 1763 angegeben wird. Auch spricht nach Marciat
für dieses Jahr der Umstand, dass der älteste Sohn des Marquis,
Louis-Marie de Sade im Jahre 1783 Lieutenant im Regiment
Soubise wurde. Wenn dieser erst 1767 geboren wäre, so würde er
mit 16 Jahren Lieutenant gewesen sein. Die Rückkehr des Marquis
de Sade und seine Heirat fand also im Jahre 1763 statt.
Die Geschichte dieser Heirat ist von dem Bibliophilen Jacob nach
den Mitteilungen eines Zeitgenossen, des Herrn Lefébure sehr
ausführlich erzählt worden.[494] Marciat ist geneigt, derselben vom
psychologischen Standpunkte aus einen grossen Wert
beizumessen, da sie die Erklärung für die moralische Entartung
(déviation) des Marquis de Sade liefere. Wir können dem nicht
beistimmen. Mag auch jenes Ereignis, das wir gleich darstellen
werden, irgend einen Einfluss in dieser Beziehung auf Sade
ausgeübt haben: seine sittliche Depravation war schon vorher da.
Als er nach Paris zurückkehrte, warf der Vater ihm bereits einige
„Jugendthorheiten“ vor. Niemand hat bisher daran gedacht, dass der
Marquis de Sade den ganzen 7jährigen Krieg mitgemacht hat und
ganz sicher teilnahm an jener „schrecklichen Entsittlichung, welche
durch die Anwesenheit des französischen Heeres“ in Deutschland
gepflanzt und genährt wurde[495] und deren auch Casanova in
seinen Memoiren gedenkt. Der Vater wollte ferner den Sohn
verheiraten, um ihn aus seinem lasterhaften Leben herauszureissen,
wie doch deutlich aus allen Berichten hervorgeht. Wenn
Eulenburg[496] meint, dass sich bei de Sade die „krankhafte
Veränderung“ im Alter von 26 Jahren äusserte, so ist das auch nicht
ganz zutreffend, da er schon, wie wir sehen werden, im Jahre 1763,
wegen mehrerer „débauches“, die also nicht so ganz harmlos
gewesen sein müssen, ins Gefängnis kam. Wir dürfen annehmen,
dass die Neigung zu sexuellen Ausschweifungen bei Sade durch
das Kriegsleben erweckt worden ist und durch das tausendfältig
gegebene Beispiel gefördert wurde, ohne dass wir nötig haben, an
das plötzliche Auftreten eines krankhaften Geisteszustandes zu
denken.
Herr von Montreuil, Präsident der „Cour des aides“, der durch
eine langjährige Freundschaft mit dem Vater des Marquis de Sade
verbunden war, hatte zwei Töchter im Alter von 20 und 13 Jahren,
beide gleich hübsch und wohl erzogen, aber in Hinsicht auf
Charakter und äussere Figur verschieden. Die Aeltere, eine Brünette
mit schwarzem Haar und dunklen Augen, war eine grosse
majestätische Erscheinung, sehr fromm, ohne „Herzenswärme“ (?).
Die Jüngere, eine blauäugige Blondine, trotz ihrer Jugend schon von
gereiftem Aussehen, war sehr intelligent, von „himmlischer Milde und
Anmut“ dabei aber eine leidenschaftliche Natur.
Es war zwischen den Vätern vereinbart worden, dass der
Marquis de Sade die ältere Tochter heiraten sollte. Ein merkwürdiges
Geschick fügte es, dass dieser bei seinem ersten Besuche im Hause
des Präsidenten Montreuil nur die jüngere Tochter antraf, da die
ältere krank war. Er verliebte sich sofort leidenschaftlich in die
erstere, die den Musikenthusiasten besonders durch ihren schönen
Gesang und ihr wunderbares Harfenspiel für sich einnahm. Als Sade
bei einem zweiten Besuche die ältere Schwester kennen lernte,
fühlte er gegen dieselbe nur Abneigung und erklärte, dass er die
jüngere heiraten wolle. Hierzu verweigerte der Präsident seine
Zustimmung, und so liess der Comte de Sade seinen Sohn wählen
zwischen Unterwerfung unter seinen Willen und einer sofortigen
Abreise zur Armee mit der Aussicht auf Enterbung und Verstossung.
So wurde der Marquis, dessen Appell an das Herz der Mutter der
beiden Mädchen nur eine „kalte und heroische Erwiderung“ fand,
gezwungen, die ältere Tochter zu heiraten. Schon damals erwiderte
die Jüngere die Liebe de Sade’s und hatte vergeblich durch Bitten
und Thränen das Herz ihrer Eltern zu erweichen gesucht. Lacroix
legt ausführlich dar, wie Sade nur mit dem Gedanken des sofortigen
Ehebruchs mit der Jüngeren die ihm unsympathische ältere
Schwester geheiratet habe und vielleicht schon damals mit der
zweiten Schwester im Einverständnis war. Frau von Montreuil, die
vom Anfang an die Natur ihres Schwiegersohnes durchschaute,
brachte ihre jüngere Tochter in ein Kloster, um einem drohenden
Skandal vorzubeugen.
Es bleibe dahingestellt, ob diese Geschichte die Hauptursache
der Demoralisation des Marquis de Sade gewesen ist, wie Marciat
annimmt. Sicher erklärt sie die Ehefeindlichkeit, welche uns in allen
Schriften Sade’s entgegentritt. Dass allerdings seine Frau, der
Lacroix die Wärme des Herzens fehlen lässt, ihm dazu keinerlei
Veranlassung gab, haben die soeben von Paul Ginisty
veröffentlichten „Lettres inédites de la Marquise de Sade“ gezeigt,
die für die Geschichte dieser Ehe und für das Verständnis des
Charakters des Marquis de Sade sehr lehrreich sind.[497] Sie
offenbart sich in diesen Briefen als eine selbstlose, treue, ihrem
Gatten mit leidenschaftlicher Liebe zugethane Seele, die selbst dann
nicht aufhört mit heisser Sehnsucht an ihn zu denken, für ihn zu
sorgen und zu beten, wenn er — wie dies gewöhnlich geschah —
diese Liebe mit rohen, unedlen Worten und gemeinen
Verdächtigungen erwiderte. Diese Frau, die Zeugin des lasterhaften
Lebens ihres Gatten, der dadurch hervorgerufenen grossen
Skandale, hörte niemals auf, ihn zärtlich zu lieben, war ihm bei der
Flucht aus dem Gefängnisse behilflich und erwies ihm in seinem
Gefängnisleben tausend Dienste, die nur eine hingebende Liebe
erweisen kann. Das deutet wirklich darauf hin, dass der Marquis de
Sade etwas von dem an sich hatte, was er selbst als die „Wonne des
Lasters“ bezeichnet und was alle Frauen unwiderstehlich anzog. Wie
er selbst diese Liebe lohnte, hat Ginisty ausführlich dargestellt. Wir
teilen nur eine Probe mit. Einmal schreibt ihm seine Frau: „Du musst
die Welt besser kennen als ich. Thue, was Du willst. Ich will nur das
Hörrohr für Deine Befehle sein. Du weisst, dass Du auf mich als
Deine beste und zärtlichste Freundin rechnen kannst.“ Sade schrieb
an den Rand dieses Briefes: „Kann man so unverschämt lügen?“[498]
Bei dem Verhältnisse zwischen den beiden Ehegatten darf es
nicht Wunder nehmen, dass der Marquis de Sade, nachdem er
vergeblich den Aufenthaltsort des jüngeren Fräulein von Montreuil zu
erkunden gesucht hatte, sich nach Lacroix[499] schon im ersten Jahre
seiner Ehe in den Strudel wilder Ausschweifungen stürzte, seine
Gesundheit und seine Reichtümer mit Hilfe der berüchtigsten Roués
seiner Zeit vergeudete, und die „Koryphäe der parfümierten Orgien“
des Herzogs von Fronsac und des Prinzen Lamballe wurde, aber es
auch nicht verschmähte, sich mit Lakaien zu widerlichen Saturnalien
zu vereinigen. Eingeweiht in die „Geheimnisse der petites maisons
und der Bordelle“ suchte er seine Gefährten in dem Ersinnen neuer
raffinierter Lüste zu übertreffen. Das war jene Zeit, in welcher ein
deutscher Autor den Marquis de Sade zum Arrangeur der Orgien
des Hirschparks macht,[500] was historisch nicht festgestellt, aber
glaubwürdig sein kann. Schon wenige Monate nach seiner Heirat
wurde Sade, der erst 23 Jahre zählte, in Vincennes eingekerkert,
weil er in einer „petite maison“ grosse Excesse begangen hatte. Hier
benahm er sich sehr zurückhaltend und ruhig und fügte sich ohne
Murren in die Tagesordnung des Gefängnisses, bat nur, ihm seinen
Kammerdiener zu lassen und bisweilen den Genuss frischer Luft zu
vergönnen. In einem Briefe vom 2. November bittet er, dass man
seiner Frau von seiner Verhaftung Nachricht gebe, aber den Grund
derselben verschweige, und wünscht einen Priester zu sehen. Er
schliesst mit den Worten: „So unglücklich ich bin, beklage ich mich
nicht über mein Schicksal; denn ich verdiene die göttliche Strafe;
meine Fehler bereuen, meine Irrtümer verabscheuen, soll meine
einzige Beschäftigung sein.“[501] Schon damals muss er ein
obscönes Buch geschrieben haben. Denn in diesem Briefe spricht er
von dem Datum des „unglückseligen Buches“, das erst aus dem Juni
stamme, während er sich am 17. Mai verheiratet habe. Auch habe er
erst im Juni jenes genannte Haus aufgesucht. Darauf habe er sich
drei Monate auf dem Lande aufgehalten und sei acht Tage nach
seiner Rückkehr verhaftet worden. Welche seiner Schriften de Sade
hier im Auge hat, ist vorläufig noch nicht festzustellen. Wenn
Cabanès (a. a. O. Seite 262) meint, dass die „Justine“ gemeint sei,
so ist das eben mit dem bis heute vorliegenden litterarischen und
archivalischen Material nicht zu beweisen. Indessen geht doch aus
dem vorliegenden wichtigen Briefe mit aller Sicherheit hervor, dass
Sade frühzeitig, schon mit 23 Jahren, anfing, pornographische
Schriften zu verfassen.
Vielleicht hat Marciat Recht mit der Annahme, dass dieser an den
Gouverneur des Gefängnisses gerichtete Brief von einer
heuchlerischen Gesinnung eingegeben worden sei, vielleicht aber
auch liegt hier eine der bei sexuell ausschweifenden Menschen so
häufig vorkommenden religiösen Anwandlungen vor. Es hat sich
noch ein kleines Billet an den Gefängnispriester Griffet vom 4.
November 1763 erhalten (veröffentlicht im „Amateur d’Autographes“
1866 und bei Cabanès). Es heisst in demselben: „Wir haben einen
neuen Gefangenen in Vincennes, welcher einen Beichtvater zu
sprechen wünscht und sicherlich Ihre Dienste nöthig hat, obgleich er
nicht krank ist. Es ist der Marquis de Sade, ein junger Mann von 22
Jahren. Ich bitte Sie, ihn sobald wie möglich zu besuchen, und wenn
Sie mit ihm gesprochen haben, so werden Sie mir einen Gefallen
thun, wenn Sie bei mir vorsprechen.“[502]
5. Das Gefängnisleben des Mannes.
Aehnlich einem neueren französischen Dichter, Paul Verlaine,
hat der Marquis de Sade, nachdem er ins Mannesalter eingetreten
war, einen grosses Teil seines Lebens in Gefängnissen zugebracht.
[503] Wenn man den letzten Aufenthalt in Charenton hinzurechnet,
hat er im ganzen 27 Jahre in 11 Gefängnissen verbracht: von diesen
27 Jahren fallen 14 Jahre in sein Mannes-, 13 Jahre in sein
Greisenalter. In der Einsamkeit des Kerkers verarbeitete er den Stoff
zu seinen Werken, was bei deren späterer Beurteilung berücksichtigt
werden muss. Das ganze Mannesalter des Marquis de Sade können
wir als ein Gefängnisleben mit Unterbrechungen bezeichnen, das
reich ist an dramatischen Vorgängen, die seinen Namen schnell
berühmt machten, wenn auch dieser Ruhm ein sehr trauriger war.
Gleich die Veranlassung zu seiner zweiten Einkerkerung war ein von
den Zeitgenossen vielfach besprochener Vorgang. Es war
