A KASHMIRI SILVER SWEETMEAT DISH
AND A PAAN BOX
Kashmiri ergonomics are revered considering they have
contributed to the essence of design with creations such as the
mango-shaped “Bouteh” Paisley design and the chinar design.
These lots display defining virtuosity of Kashmiri craftsmanship
and denote the importance of the chinar design. The sweetmeat
dish is adorned with two typical Kashmiri themes: the chinar leaf
and the mango-shaped paisley design. The piece is composed
of three chinar leaves, with each leaf having larger flowers
superimposed on smaller, densely incised flowers. The stems of
the larger flowers have been placed to suggest the veins of the
individual leaves, and the three leaves have been joined by a
pierced design of additional stems and leaves.

A GROUP OF FOUR SILVER OBJECTS FROM KUTCH
Kutch silver is distinguished by its closely worked, foliate, répoussé and chased design. The preliminary
répoussé pattern was punched from the inside, post which they were filled with a resin compound.
Thereafter they were worked upon from the outside. When the work was complete, the piece was heated
until the resin filling melted out, leaving the now-empty piece stunningly decorated. Silver scroll holders
were used in India for the presentation of documents and as presentation cases for departing Colonial
administrators. This scroll was designed with a functional cylindrical form, the piece bears superior foliate
chased decoration depicting parakeets, peacocks, and other exotic birds. While the silver goblets are
lavishly ornamented with the traditional Kutch coriander pattern. Special attention must be given to the
fronds that are designed and executed particularly well in Kutchi style not so frequently seen.

Filigree styles is an ancient art of crafting jewellery with fine metal wires and is
believed to have originated in Mesopotamia and Egypt around 2500 BC.
Thereafter due to it popularity and unique stylistic aura this design pattern
spawned across Asia as well. Indian and Greek filigree still have similar
patterns and processes to this day, a testimony of common influence. The
silver filigree of Odisha is globally recognized for its delicate artistry and

Lucknow emerged as an important location for the
craftsmanship of such fine enamelling on silver. The
base of this Hookah has an emblem engraved at the
centre. It shows two fish moving counter clockwise, it
also represents the confluence of the Ganges and the
Jumna, symbolized by a pall wavy. In all actuality it is
also inspired by Buddhist symbolic representation
which denotes freedom from restraint and the life
giving properties of water. The motto of achievement is
written on a ribbon and added to this emblem and
spells out ‘Ratyatasti Paro Dharma.’ The overall look
of this Hukkah exudes a certain richness that is seen
in the motifs from the Ottoman inspired Mughalesque
floral intricacies.

Hookah. The funnels are conjoined by a Half

lid have a symmetric design pattern while the
funnels display a smooth finish. Smoking a
