Okay, before I reveal the reason why we greeted in another


language, let’s first do an activity because it will also give
you a hint what country does the language we used, and it is
entitled “arrange me if you can”.

Instructions:
The class will be divided into five groups. Each group will
choose one – two representatives who will present their
outputs. Representatives will give prior knowledge about the
pictures or words assigned to them. Each group will be given
an envelope which contains pictures and words for them to
arrange to get the correct answers within 3 minutes.

Let us now formally begin our discussion. Do you know this

If that is so, what country has this flag? Japan Ma’am.

Okay, so there are three languages in Japan: Hiragana,


Katakana, and Kanji.

What are the meanings of the three? Hiragana and Katakana are phonetic symbols,
each representing one syllable while Kanji is
ideogram, each stand for certain meaning.
Okay, thank you! We will now proceed to the history of
Kabuki, the Japanese Theater.

In the history of Japan, Kabuki’s origin began in the Edo


period where it became famous in the lower class rather
than higher society.

What is Kabuki? A classical Japanese dance drama.

What else? Kabuki is with highly


stylized song, mime,
and dance, now
performed only by male
actors, using
exaggerated gestures
and body movements to
express emotions, and
including historical
plays, domestic dramas, and dance pieces.

When did the love for Kabuki Theater begin? The traditional form of popular theater began at
the end of 16th century and soon became the
most successful theater entertainment in the
red-light districts of the great cities.

Who performed female dance troupe? Izumo no Okuni formed a female dance troupe
to perform dances and light sketches in Kyoto
but developed into an all-male theatrical form

in 1629.
