INTRODUCTION
with Shivan Sarna

If you’re like me, there was probably a time (or

you’re in it right now!) that you didn’t pay much
attention to your liver or gallbladder.

I get it. We hardly learn about them in school,

rarely discuss them at the doctors unless
something is wrong, and “liver and gallbladder
health” isn’t necessarily in the mainstream media.

But the liver is the heart and soul of your body’s

detox system, working 24 hours a day to filter out
toxins and rid the body of waste. It does this
essential job with the help of the gallbladder, a
tiny but mighty organ that is hugely undervalued,
with many people mistakenly believing it’s a
“throwaway.”

Together, the liver and gallbladder are two of the

most important but overlooked and under-
appreciated systems in the body. When your liver
and gallbladder are optimized, your energy levels,
weight, hormones, digestion, skin and more all
benefit.

The warning signs of liver and gallbladder issues
aren’t always obvious. Instead, they’re more often
a below-the-surface simmer of general,
seemingly-unrelated health complaints… bloating,
fatigue, anxiety, hormone issues, and more.
They’re the annoying symptoms that hold you
back from living your most vibrant life.

If you’ve been struggling from a medical mystery

or haven’t been feeling your best self, your liver or
gallbladder could be the culprit. Luckily, with the
right information, you can start transforming your
health right now- beginning with this book!

Let this ebook be your first step towards prioritizing

your liver and gallbladder health. With the help of
some of our talented practitioners and experts
that teach in our Liver and Gallbladder SOS &
Rescue Summit, you’ll learn more about these
important organs, how your detox system works,
the best supplements and foods for support, the
emotional impact poor liver and gallbladder
health can have, and more.

REMINDER! This book is not a substitute for medical advice.

It’s an educational resource meant to help you care for your
body and walk into appointments with the foundation and
motivation to improve your liver and gallbladder!

WHAT IS YOUR
LIVER?
Your liver is an organ located in the upper right
abdomen, beneath the rib cage. It is a dark
reddish-brown color and is divided into two
lobes: a larger right lobe and a smaller left lobe.

Your liver performs many jobs. Some of the most

important ones include detoxification, assisting
metabolism, bile production, and processing and
storing nutrients. It also does things like blood
sugar & hormone regulation and immune
function, amongst others.

Your liver is a highly resilient organ and can

regenerate itself to some extent. However, if the
liver is damaged or diseased, it can lead to
serious health problems. Some common liver
diseases include hepatitis, cirrhosis, and fatty
liver disease.

WHAT IS YOUR
GALLBLADDER?
Your gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ
located in the upper right abdomen beneath the liver.
It stores and concentrates bile, a greenish-yellow fluid
(keep reading to learn more about bile).

When we eat, the gallbladder contracts and releases

bile into the small intestine. Bile helps to break down
fats into smaller molecules that can be easily
absorbed by the body.

The gallbladder isn’t a vital organ, and people can live

without it… but that does NOT mean the gallbladder is
unimportant. Without it, you may have digestive
difficulties including diarrhea, bloating, and gas.
Complications with your gallbladder may lead to
gallstones, a hard deposit that forms in the
gallbladder that can cause pain, inflammation, and
blockages in bile ducts.

WHAT IS BILE?
You’ll probably see the word bile a lot in this ebook.

Bile is a fluid produced and used by your liver and

gallbladder. It helps you digest fats, absorb
vitamins, remove waste products and toxins from
your body, fight off illness, and contributes to the
growth and development of your intestines.

IMPORTANT
LIVER FACTS with Dr. Anne Hill

Your liver weighs about three

and a third pounds, making it
the second largest organ in
the body after the skin.

When your liver is damaged,

it regrows cells. This is unlike
other areas of the body,
which can only grow scar
tissue.

Your liver does over 500 different jobs in

your body, like
Breaking down drugs, and toxins, and
byproducts created by bodily processes
Processing hormones, insulin, and
estrogen
Recycling old red blood cells, which
have only a 90 day life span

IMPORTANT
LIVER FACTS with Dr. Anne Hill

Your liver is essential for all metabolic

processes*– carbs, proteins, and lipids!

*What is metabolism? It’s when we take food

and we convert it into energy to run all of the
cellular processes in our body! Essentially, it
allows us to grow and to reproduce, to maintain
our structure and our health, and be able to
respond to the environments in which we are
going to be in during our lifetime.

PHASES OF
DETOXIFICATION
with Jaime Boyacheck

When learning about liver health, it’s important to

understand how the liver detoxifies your body and how
each phase can impact your health.

In this section, we’ll cover phases 1, 2, 2.5, and 3 of liver

detoxification.

PHASE 1
In this phase, your liver is watching out for fat-soluble
toxins that come from our gut, blood, and fat stores.

It’s the first step in eradicating toxins by converting

them via chemical reactions: oxidation, reduction, and
hydrolysis.

This phase produces a lot of free radicals, and toxins

can actually get more toxic.

Key takeaway!

© 2024 Chronic Condition Rescue | chronicconditionrescue.com page 9

PHASE 2
In this phase, the various toxins get conjugated into
water-soluble forms. This means the liver adds
molecules to the toxins to neutralize them, enabling
them to be removed from the body via water and
other fluid.

In this phase, it’s important to get enough nutrients like

molydenum, NAC, essential fatty acids, and B vitamins.

PHASE 2.5
In this phase, the toxins from the liver enter through the
door that leads into the bile and out for elimination.

However, problems like inflammation can lead to this

door staying closed, which prevents the toxins from
getting out through the bile and increases burden on
the kidneys, skin, and other elimination pathways.

© 2024 Chronic Condition Rescue | chronicconditionrescue.com page 10

PHASE 3
Toxins are diverted for excretion through bile, urine,
bowel movements, sweating, and breathing.

You help support this pathway everyday just by

completing these actions, and can support it even
more through actions like exercising or using a sauna.

PS. WHAT ABOUT THE GALLBLADDER?

Remember- the liver assists with hundreds of jobs in
the body. The gallbladder and liver work together
mainly for digestion. As the liver produces bile, the
gallbladder stores and concentrates this bile, saving it
until you eat fatty foods. Then, the gallbladder releases
bile into the small intestine for fat digestion and
absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.

While the gallbladder doesn’t directly help with

detoxing, ensuring the digestive process runs smoothly
also ensures your bile will effectively carry out toxins.

LIVER &
LIVER AND GALLBLADDER
GALLBLADDER
SUPPORTIVE
SUPPORTIVE FOODS FOODS
AND SUPPLEMENTS with Roger Murphee and
Dr. Maya Shetreat

One of the most important things you can do to begin

prioritizing your liver and gallbladder health is make an
effort to enhance and improve your diet with liver and
gallbladder supportive foods and supplements.

Consistently incorporating these foods and

supplements into your diet can make a huge difference
in your liver and gallbladder health and resolve
symptoms that may have been a medical mystery.

Many of these supplements are bitters, which help your

liver by increasing glutathione, one of the most potent
antioxidants, along with many benefits listed below.

Remember that everyones body reacts differently to

different things, especially supplements. Please consult
your doctor or a medical professional before adding a
supplement to your routine.

FOODS

Avocados, spinach, okra

Increase glutathione and reduce
toxic oxidative stress

© 2024 Chronic Condition Rescue | chronicconditionrescue.com page 12

Grapefruit juice
Helps slow down a fast phase 1 if
your phase 1 is too fast for your
phase 2

Blueberries and grapes

Long lasting liver protection

BITTERS

Bitters increase stomach acid, gastric motility (less

belching, less gas), and digestion and absorption
(better access to nutrients).

They help stabilize your blood sugar, enhance immunity

in the gut, ears, nose, and throat during cold and flu
season, increase bile release, and assist your liver with
detoxing.

Chocolate and coffee

Because the word “bitters” may
sound gross or unappetizing, Dr.
Shetreat likes to use these as
examples of bitters that many of us
already love!
She suspects many caffiene
addictions are also an addiction to
the health affects of bitters.

Green tea
Contains caffeine and L-theanine, a
combination shown to cause both
focused attention and calm instead
of the jitters caused by caffeine

are important for liver support and
detoxification
Combine with black pepper or
chicory to enhance absorption

Ginger
A potent anti-inflammatory
Good for migraines, nausea and
vomiting
Protects from fatty liver and non-
alcoholic liver disease
To enhance its benefits in a drink,
bring ginger and water to a boil in a
pot and let simmer for 10 minutes

HERBS & SUPPLEMENTS

Dandelion
A mild bitter
Diuretic, also good for kidney detox
How to eat: dandelion root tea,
dandelion fritters from blossoms

THE MENTAL AND
EMOTIONAL IMPACT
OF LIVER AND
GALLBLADDER
HEALTH with Dr. Sharon Stills

Last but not least, it’s important to discuss the effect

that poor liver and gallbladder health may have on
your mental state and emotions.

While most traditional doctors don’t focus on the mind-

body connection, Dr. Sharon Stills is a true visionary in
the way she looks at our physical health and its impact
on our mental state, affecting everything from focus to
our fears and desires.

This list of emotional issues related to poor liver and

gallbladder health may help you identify where you are
struggling. We’ve created a checklist on the next page
for you to mark any emotional and mental symptoms
that you may be struggling with. Make sure to tune in to
our Liver & Gallbladder SOS & Rescue Summit to learn
more about why these emotions are tied to these
organs and what you can do about it.

Because the mind-body complex can’t be separated,

it’s important to recognize that being mindful about
how we feel mentally and emotionally can help us
figure out what is going on in our physical body.
