We are on board a polivalent tug boat which is envolved in search and rescue
operations. The entire crew is of SPANISH nationality. A call from the VTS-Vessel Traffic
Services- activates her to assist a ship transporting fertilizers and one of its tanks has
gone into chemical combustion, she has sent a MAYDAY message. Upon reaching the
indicated place, about 100 miles from the coast, she finds a BRITISH flag ship, seriously
affected by the fire and crew already evacuated. The DUTCH technicians that the
shipping company has hired to evaluate and organize the necessary tasks to control the
fire are already in the area of the incident. The Spanish tug, with a fire-fighting system, is
under the orders of the Dutch technicians in order to cool the hull of the bulk carrier in
the exact way that the Dutch require. It is a very dangerous situation and it is imperative
to follow the orders of the Dutch specialists. Every communication step is done by
RADIO and in ENGLISH.
Definitely, it is very important the knowledge of English no matter the nationality of your
vessel or the situation you are at: British vessel had to send an MAYDAY message to the
Spanish VTS and require an evacuation. Dutch and Spanish workers had to communicate
with each other in a common language in order to get the situation under control.
I haven’t found any real situation (english communication between vessels) to support
my task, but I have found these two interesting links:
