Course Title : Electromagnetic Fields and Waves
Course code : EEE305
Section No : 01

Tasks:
1. Design two coils in Ansys Maxwell 3D :
Procedure:
• Design the coils with the following specifications:
(Here AB is the last two digits of your student ID. And my Student ID’s last two
digits are 0 and 1.)
Parameter Primary coil/ Transmitter coil Secondary coil/ Receiver coil
Polygon segments 4 4
Polygon Radius 0.4 mm 0.2 mm
Start Helix Radius 9A/1B = 90/11= 8.18mm 4.5 mm
Radius Change 1.2 mm 1 mm
Pitch 0 0
Turns 2 3
Segments Per Turn 36 36
Right Handed 0 0

• Set the material of both coils as copper.

• Set the distance between the centers of the two coils = 10 mm
• Setup a region with 50% offset on every-side of the model.
• Set current excitation at both terminals of each coil. You must set opposite
directions.
At the two terminals of a coils. You must connect two wires to provide the current
excitation. The offset of the region from the excitation should be zero.
• Assign the analysis setup, with maximum number of passes = 5, percent error = 1
• Check validity of the design.
• Run the simulation.
• Find the self-inductance of each coil and mutual inductance between two coils
from the
results > Solution Data.
Task-1
2. Change the number of turns of the primary coil. Simulate and find the self and
mutual inductances.
Fill up the following table with the self and mutual inductances for 5 different
values of number of turns.
Serial Number of turns Self-inductance Self- Mutual inductance

1 2 94.926 72.62 2.3723
2 2.4 95.175 72.571 2.372
3 3 148.35 71.409 2.6203
4 3.1 148.5 71.371 2.62035
5 3.2 148.67 71.34 2.6204

3. Provide the table of parameters of the transmitter and receiver coils that gives
maximum mutual inductance at Task 2.
The Maximum mutual inductance (2.6204) was obtained when the number of
turns of the transmitter coil was 3.1.
