Preface
For som e time we have noted that the title of this book, Understanding H1111wn Com-
munication, is mislead ing in two ways.
On o ne hand, the title p rom ises too little. He lping readers understand the na-
ture of huma n communicat ion is certain ly o ne goal of this boo k. But beyo nd
comprehensio n, we hope students will lea rn ways to apply the ir new fou nd knowl-
edge, the reby becoming mo re skill fu l communicators in thei r eve ryday lives.
On the other hand, this book's ti tle p romises too much. It's unrea listic to ex-
pect that a ny introduction wi ll give readers a comprehensive unde rstandi ng of
such a complex subject. For that reason, we've come to rea lize that a mo re accurate
tit le would be Beginning to Understllnd Humtln Communietllion. One measure of suc-
cess is the degree to which stude nts leave the introducto ry course wanting to lear n
more about this fascinating and importa nt subject.
After 12 editions, it's too late to change the book's ti tle. No netheless, a quick
loo k at the contents should make o ur goa l clear: to prov ide a n engagi ng, compre-
hensive, useful introductio n to the academic study of hu man communication as
it is p racticed in the 21st century.
We remai n conv inced that the best test of this book's success in achievi ng this
goa l is to ask three q uestions: Is its content importa nt? Is the mate ria l clea r? Is it
usefu l? Th ese th ree questions allov, us to develop a comprehensive exploratio n of
hu ma n communicatio n that wi ll be truly mea ningful to students. You a re the best
judge o f how well we have succeeded.
Approach
This 12th editio n builds o n the approach that has served well over half a mi ll io n
students and thei r professors. Rather than take sides in the theory vs. skills debate
that often rages in ou r discipli ne, Understanding Human Communication treats schol-
arsh ip a nd ski ll development as mutually reinforcing. Its reader-friend ly approach
strives to p resen t material dearly without bei ng overly simplistic. Examples o n vir-
