(a) Write the balanced equation for the reaction taking place.
(1)

Ans: NaOH (aq) + HNO3(aq) → NaNO3(aq) + H2O(l) (1 mark)

(1:1) ratio hence LR = HNO3

(c) Calculate the concentration of each ion remaining in solution after complete
neutralization has occurred.
(3)

Ans: [OH−] = 0.285 mol/ 0.0750 L = 3.80 M (OH- is in excess, the H+ was all reacted)

H-N-H bond angles, 107.5° and ~ 104.5° respectively. Very briefly explain the
variation of the bond angle values.
(3)
Ans:

1 mark for each Lewis diagram: NH3 one lone pair and three bonds and NH2− 2 lone
pairs and 2 bonds.

1 mark for explaining that nonbonding domains occupy more space than bonding
domains, therefore the bond angle decreases as the number of lone pairs increases.

ie NH3 shows a H-N-H bond of ~107.5°and NH2 shows a H-N-H bond of ~104.5°.

If all the N2(g) and H2(g) are consumed, what volume of NH3, at the same
temperature and pressure will be produced?

(2)
Ans: Avogadro’s law: n direct proportional to V therefore, 1.2 x 2 2.4 L

3.6L/1.2L = 3 vol/1 vol therefore

1.2 L N2 x (2 mol NH3/1 mol N2 ) = 2.4 L

(c) A gaseous mixture containing 0.538 mol of He, 0.315 mol of Ne and 0.103 mol of
Ar is kept in a 7.0 L gas cylinder at 25 °C and a total pressure of 3.34 atm.
Calculate the partial pressure (in atm) of the Ne gas in the mixture.
(2)
Ans: PNe = Mole fraction Ne x P Tot
= 0.329(5) x 3.34atm
= 1.10 atm
