CYBERCRIME AND THE ONLINE THREAT
U.S. President Obama, when referring to corporate cyber espionage, stated that “It’s been
estimated that last year alone cyber criminals stole intellectual property from businesses
worldwide worth up to one trillion dollars”. With such a looming threat, plus the ease of
exploiting online fraud, organizations are faced with the need not only to react, but also
to innovate in their operations.
Advanced fraud and cybercrime threats are not just a problem for consumers, but are
also increasingly affecting businesses in all sectors. For example, attack technology such
as malware (Trojans) and botnets infecting corporate end-points, as well as insider and
employee deceptive actions, are creating new risks. Even the most “traditional” online
threat, “phishing”*, has not diminished as a principal form of attack and is frequently
combined or leveraged with other fraud methods for proliferation.
