Preface

To bring anything into your life, imagine that it’s already there.

—Richard Bach

The quote above truly captures the essence of this book. Self-leadership is
a process of leading yourself to overcome obstacles to your goals. We
believe that everyone practices self-leadership, but not everyone practices
self-leadership effectively. This book is a comprehensive self-help guide
that is thoroughly grounded in sound principles and research. It addresses
the most interesting subject you will ever encounter—yourself. If you want
to be more effective in your work and life, this book is for you. It provides
powerful advice and the tools you need to lead yourself to personal
excellence, offering a practical perspective that should serve as the
foundation for the study of management. The book is based on a simple
yet revolutionary principle: first learn to lead yourself, and then you will
be in a solid position to lead others effectively.

Consider the following:

Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman on the U.S. Supreme Court,
could not get a job as a lawyer on graduating from law school. The
only job offered to her was that of a legal secretary.
Michael Jordan, arguably the best basketball player of all time, was
cut from his high school basketball team.
Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the world’s major composers, was
told by a music teacher that he had no talent for music. In fact, this
teacher once remarked about Beethoven, “As a composer he is
hopeless.”
As a young man, Walt Disney, the great cartoonist and movie
producer, was advised to pursue another line of work by a newspaper
editor in Kansas City, who told Disney, “You don’t have any creative,
original ideas.”
A Munich schoolmaster told ten-year-old Albert Einstein, who later
became a brilliant scientist, “You will never amount to much.”
In 1962, Decca Records turned down the opportunity to work with an

unknown music group called the Beatles. The company’s rationale
was, “We don’t like their sound and guitar music is on the way out.”
This unknown singing group subsequently became legendary.
Dr. Seuss’s first children’s book, And to Think That I Saw It on
Mulberry Street, was rejected by twenty-seven publishers. The
twenty-eighth, Vanguard Press, sold 6 million copies of the book.
The book Chicken Soup for the Soul, written by Jack Canfield and
Mark Victor Hansen, was turned down by thirty-three publishers
before Health Communications agreed to publish it. Major New York
publishers said, “It is too nicey nice” and “Nobody wants to read a
book of short little stories.” Since the first book came out in 1993,
more than 80 million copies of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series
have been sold worldwide, with translations in thirty-nine languages.
In 1935, the New York Herald Tribune’s review of composer George
Gershwin’s now-classic opera Porgy and Bess stated that the work
was “surefire rubbish.”
Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light, the phonograph,
and more than a hundred other useful items, was told by a teacher that
he was too stupid to learn anything.
During their first year in business, the founders of the Coca-Cola
Company sold only four hundred bottles of Coke.
In response to Fred Smith’s term paper proposing the creation of a
reliable overnight delivery service, a Yale University management
professor wrote, “The concept is interesting and well formed, but in
order to earn better than a C, the idea must be feasible.” Smith went
on to establish the Federal Express Corporation based on the ideas in
this “average” paper.
Inventor Chester Carlson pounded the streets for years before he
found backers for his photocopying process and subsequently helped
to establish the Xerox Corporation.
Before he founded Apple Computer, Steve Jobs was rejected by
Atari and Hewlett-Packard during his attempts to get companies
interested in his idea about a personal computer. Hewlett-Packard
personnel remarked, “Hey, we don’t need you. You haven’t gotten
through college yet.” Jobs pursued the idea himself, and Apple’s first-
year sales exceeded $2.5 million.
In December 1977, with only $20,000 to his name, Michael Burton
was laughed at by colleagues and bankers when he quit his lucrative
small business consulting job and vowed to turn his “snowsurfing”
concept into a popular sport. By 1998, Burton was owner of Burton

Snowboards, the largest pure snowboarding company in the world,
with annual sales of more than $150 million. Because of Burton’s
promotional efforts, some 8 million people worldwide enjoy
snowboarding, and it officially became a medal sport in the 1998
Winter Olympics. Who’s laughing now?

These are just a few illustrations of people who persevered—who led


themselves by using their strengths, skills, and determination to overcome
the “can’ts” in their lives, who knew in their own minds that they could
succeed. They did not let initial failures rob them of their dreams. They
followed their inner voices and kept forging ahead until their fantasies
became realities.

What is your dream? Is it perhaps to become a doctor? A lawyer? A


supermodel? A CEO? Is it to start your own business? To raise a healthy
and happy family? To become a teacher? A rock star? A television news
anchor? Maybe you want to win an Academy Award? Possibly even
become president of the United States? Despite what some may try to tell
you, whatever you want to become, you can! As William A. Ward once
wrote,

If you can imagine it, you can achieve it;

If you can dream it, you can become it.

Do you believe in yourself and your ability to make your dreams come

About the Authors

Dr. Christopher P. Neck is currently an Associate Professor of


Management at Arizona State University, where he held the title
“University Master Teacher.” From 1994 to 2009, he was part of the
Pamplin College of Business faculty at Virginia Tech. He received his
PhD in management from Arizona State University and his MBA from
Louisiana State University. Dr. Neck is the author and/or coauthor of the
books Self-Leadership: The Definitive Guide to Personal Excellence
(SAGE, 2017); Get a Kick Out of Life: Expect the Best of Your Body,
Mind, and Soul at Any Age (2017); Fit to Lead: The Proven 8-Week
Solution for Shaping Up Your Body, Your Mind, and Your Career (2004,
2012); Mastering Self-Leadership: Empowering Yourself for Personal
Excellence, 6th edition (2013); The Wisdom of Solomon at Work (2001);
For Team Members Only: Making Your Workplace Team Productive and

chapters, and articles in various journals. Some of the outlets in which Dr.
Neck’s work has appeared include Organizational Behavior and Human
Decision Processes, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Academy of
Management Executive, Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, Journal of
Managerial Psychology, Executive Excellence, Human Relations, Human
Resource Development Quarterly, Journal of Leadership Studies,
Educational Leadership, and Commercial Law Journal.

Due to Dr. Neck’s expertise in management, he has been cited in


numerous national publications including the Washington Post, Wall Street
Journal, Los Angeles Times, Houston Chronicle, and Chicago Tribune.

Dr. Neck was the recipient of the 2007 Business Week Favorite Professor
Award. He is featured on www.businessweek.com as one of the
approximately twenty professors from across the world receiving this
award.

Dr. Neck currently teaches a mega section of Management Principles to


approximately 800 students at Arizona State University. He received the
Order of Omega Outstanding Teaching Award for 2012. This award is
given to one professor at Arizona State by the Alpha Lambda Chapter of
this leadership fraternity. His class sizes at Virginia Tech filled rooms up
to 2500 students. He received numerous teaching awards during his tenure
at Virginia Tech, including the 2002 Wine Award for Teaching
Excellence. Also, Dr. Neck was the ten-time winner (1996, 1998, 2000,
2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009) of the “Students’ Choice
Teacher of the Year Award” (voted by the students for the best teacher of
the year within the entire university). Also, some of the organizations who
have participated in his management development training include
GE/Toshiba, Busch Gardens, Clark Construction, the United States Army,
Crestar, American Family Insurance, Sales and Marketing Executives
International, American Airlines, American Electric Power, W. L. Gore &
Associates, Dillard’s Department Stores, and Prudential Life Insurance.
Dr. Neck is also an avid runner. He has completed 12 marathons, including
the Boston Marathon, the New York City Marathon, and the San Diego
Marathon. In fact, his personal record for a single long distance run—is a
40-mile run.

Charles C. Manz, PhD, is a speaker, consultant, and best-selling business


author. He holds the Charles and Janet Nirenberg Chair of Leadership in
the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts.
His work has been featured on radio and television and in the Wall Street
Journal, Fortune, U.S. News & World Report, Success, Psychology Today,
Fast Company, and several other national publications. He received the
prestigious Marvin Bower Fellowship at Harvard Business School that is
“awarded for outstanding achievement in research and productivity,
influence, and leadership in business scholarship.” He earned a PhD in
business, with an emphasis in organizational behavior and psychology,
from The Pennsylvania State University and MBA and BA degrees from
Michigan State University.

He is the author or co-author of over 200 articles and scholarly papers and

Physician Executives, the U.S. and Canadian governments, and many

Jeffery D. Houghton completed his PhD in management at Virginia


Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) and is currently
associate professor of management at West Virginia University (WVU).
He has taught college-level business courses at Virginia Tech, Abilene
Christian University (Texas), Lipscomb University (Tennessee), the
International University (Vienna), and CIMBA Italy (Paderno del Grappa),
and for the U.S. Justice Department–Federal Bureau of Prisons. Prior to

pursuing a full-time career in academics, he worked in the banking
industry as a loan officer and branch manager.

Dr. Houghton’s research specialties include human behavior, motivation,


personality, leadership, and self-leadership. A member of the Honor
Society of Phi Kappa Phi, he has published more than fifty peer-reviewed
journal articles and book chapters, and his work has been cited more than
3,500 times in academic journals. He is co-author of Management: A
Balanced Approach to the 21st Century (SAGE, Forthcoming, 3rd edition)
and Organizational Behavior: A Critical-Thinking Approach (SAGE,
2017). He currently teaches undergraduate-, master’s-, and doctoral-level
courses in management, organizational behavior, and leadership. Dr.
Houghton was named the 2013 Beta Gamma Sigma Professor of the Year
for the WVU John Chambers College of Business and Economics, an
honor awarded annually to one faculty member within the college as
selected by a vote of the student members of Beta Gamma Sigma. In 2008
he received the Outstanding Teaching Award for the WVU John Chambers
College of Business and Economics, which is presented annually to one
faculty member for outstanding teaching.

In addition to his research and teaching activities, Dr. Houghton has


worked as a consultant and has conducted training seminars for
organizations such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Pfizer
Pharmaceuticals, and the Bruce Hardwood Floors Company. In his spare
time, he enjoys traveling, reading classic mystery novels, playing
racquetball, and snow skiing. In addition, he has trained for and completed
two marathons: the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C., and the
Dallas White Rock Marathon in Dallas, Texas.

“I can do it!” he shouted at the figure across the room. “All my life you’ve

see the possibilities for his life, he felt a surge of excitement, of potential
