CHOKING

 Define the emergency

Choking is the obstruction of the respiratory tract by food or small objects, such as
toys, in the case of children.

 Explain the case

 Provide your patient’s info (name, age, next of kin, medical history)
 Explain what happened to your patient.
Mr. Pablo, 45 years old, was having dinner with his wife, she tells us that they were
laughing and in the middle of laughing her husband started grabbing his neck and
couldn't speak, and she started asking for help.

In the background we find that: Mr. Pablo takes losartan because he has
hypertension.

 Mention the signs and symptoms

The characteristic sign of choking is one or both hands around the neck, we can
also see cyanosis, and inability to speak

The symptom is panic, fear and agony

 Talk about the pain your patient is experiencing (classification of pain)

The pain in my patient is of an agonizing type since he has a feeling that can
generate despair and a feeling of death

 Talk about the necessary equipment to treat your patient (first aid kit)
To provide first aid I only need my physical strength and the knowledge on how to
perform the heimlich maneuver

 Describe the nursing care treatment/interventions your patient requires

What we must do is get behind the person, put our fist above the navel and with
the other hand cover the fist and perform a backward and upward force, this should
be repeated until the object comes out or the person loses consciousness.

If the person loses consciousness, it should be checked if he is breathing and if he

has a pulse, if not, CPR should be started until help arrives.
If we are in the hospital environment the main thing is to recover the airway to
maintain oxygen in the organs
