CHAPTER LEARNING OBJECTIVES


1. Describe the essential features of a cost-volume-profit income statement. The CVP
income statement classifies costs and expenses as variable or fixed and reports contribution
margin in the body of the statement.
2. Apply basic CVP concepts. Contribution margin is the amount of revenue remaining after
deducting variable costs. It can be expressed as a per unit amount or as a ratio. The break-
even point in units is fixed costs divided by contribution margin per unit. The break-even
point in dollars is fixed costs divided by the contribution margin ratio. These formulas can
also be used to determine units or sales dollars needed to achieve target net income, simply
by adding target net income to fixed costs before dividing by the contribution margin. Margin
of safety indicates how much sales can decline before the company is operating at a loss. It
can be expressed in dollar terms or as a percentage.
3. Explain the term sales mix and its effects on break-even sales. Sales mix is the relative
proportion in which each product is sold when a company sells more than one product. For a
company with a small number of products, break-even sales in units is determined by using
the weighted-average unit contribution margin of all the products. If the company sells many
different products, then calculating the break-even point using unit information is not
practical. Instead, in a company with many products, break-even sales in dollars is
calculated using the weighted-average contribution margin ratio.
4 Determine sales mix when a company has limited resources. When a company has
limited resources, it is necessary to find the contribution margin per unit of limited resource.
This amount is then multiplied by the units of limited resource to determine which product
maximizes net income.
5. Understand how operating leverage affects profitability. Operating leverage refers to the
degree to which a company’s net income reacts to a change in sales. Operating leverage is
determined by a company’s relative use of fixed versus variable costs. Companies with high
fixed costs relative to variable costs have high operating leverage. A company with high
operating leverage will experience a sharp increase (decrease) in net income with a given
increase (decrease) in sales. The degree of operating leverage can be measured by dividing
contribution margin by net income.

6. Explain the difference between absorption costing and variable costing. Under
absorption costing, fixed manufacturing costs are product costs. Under variable costing, fixed
manufacturing costs are period costs.

7. Discuss net income effects under absorption costing versus variable costing. If
production volume exceeds sales volume, net income under absorption costing will exceed
net income under variable costing by the amount of fixed manufacturing costs included in
ending inventory that results from units produced but not sold during the period. If production

"Niin se on. Mutta ei se ole kumma, että se täällä näin menee,


täällä kun ei ole ketään, joka kykenisi oikein nuorisoa johtamaan; ei
saada koskaan valistuneempia pitämään esitelmiä, opettajatkin ovat
seuran vastustajia. Jos näihin tilaisuuksiin tulisikin johtavia
henkilöitä, niin nuoriso tulisi kaikki."

Tätä juttua kuulteli Visulainen kahvia juodessaan ja mieliala kävi


yhä alakuloisemmaksi. Hän katseli tuota nuorukaista, joka hänelle
puheli. Se oli kömpelö, hidasliikkeinen, innottoman näköinen, aivan
muun joukon kaltainen. Huonosti kaulaan soveltuva likainen
pumpuliflanellista valmistettu kaulus oli kohonnut liivin alta ja teki
epämiellyttävän vaikutuksen… Takin rintapielessä oli joku vanha,
sinivalkoinen juhlamerkki. Yleensä hän näytti kömpelöltä,
sivistymättömältä…

"Luuletteko siis seuran kuolevan?" kysyi Visulainen.

Jaakko Huttunen ei vastannut kohta. Hän särpi ensinnä kahvikupin


tyhjäksi ja sanoi sitte:

"Kun minä osaisinkin puhua ja pitää esitelmiä!… tahi kun edes


joku meistä pojista osaisi, niin kyllähän sitä sopisi vielä koettaa. Ja
nyt tarvitsisi koettaa saada tännekin edes hiukan isänmaallista
henkeä, kun seuramme johtokunnastakin lähtee kaksi poikaa
Amerikkaan."

Visulainen katsoi nuorukaisen silmiin. Tämän puhelu oli poistanut


puvun huolimattomuudesta johtuvaa vastenmielisyyttä. Kun hän oli
viimeisen tietonsa sanonut siitä Amerikkaan menosta, näkyi silmissä
jonkullainen arka levottomuus ja Visulainen odotti jo saavansa
kuulla, että Jaakko Huttunen itsekin aikoo lähteä.

"Kovin kylmä tuuli", sanoi Visulainen ja puistatteli ruumistaan.

"Nyt pitäisi alottaa", virkkoi Huttunen. "Minun pitäisi pitää


avauspuhe, mutta tämä tuntuu niin vastenmieliseltä."

Puhujalavan tienoilla koetettiin saada toimeen yksiäänistä laulua.


Visulainen sai kuulla, että se reipas, raikasääninen nuorukainen,
joka jollakin tavoin muita johti laulussa ja joka näytti tässä taidossa
olevan paljon pitemmällä muita, oli seuran kirjuri — "joka myöskin
ensiviikolla menee Amerikkaan." Jossain sopivassa tilassa päätti
Visulainen mennä ja rukoilla tuota nuorukaista jäämään ja
laulullansa lumoamaan tätä kotiseudun kansaa ja siinä kansallista
innostusta herättämään; — mutta se jäi tekemättä. —

Jaakko Huttunen seisoo puhujalavalla, katselee toivottomana ja


levottomana harvalukuista kuulijakuntaansa. Ainoastaan muutamia
on puhujalavan etupuolella, useimmat jäävät olemaan sinne missä
ovat, toisia etääntyy kentän toiselle reunalle, missä hanurinsoittaja
tuon tuostakin iloa virittää.

Hän alkaa lukea puhettaan. Siinä on hyviä ajatuksia.


Päältäkatselija ei niitä uskoisi tuon pojan omiksi. Mutta niissä on
jotain, joka ne varmasti takaa juuri hänen omikseen. Innostus alkaa
jo hiukan lämmittää Visulaista. "Tuo poika puhuu sydämmestään",
ajatteli hän. Mutta samassa käänsi Huttunen tuskaisan, epätoivoisen
katseen tuonne hanurinsoittajaan päin. Visulainenkin nyt huomasi,
että siellä oli polkka täydessä käynnissä ja — että useita nuoria
riensi sinnepäin tuolta etäämmältä kiertäen. Tuskastuttava kyllästys
näkyi Huttusen silmistä, hän tavoitteli nyt vaan puheensa loppua ja
vielä viimeisiä sanoja lausuessaan tuli jo alas lavalta.

Eläköön-huuto, jota aijottiin kohottaa, kuoli alkuunsa. Puhujalavan


takana muuan pari laski sen sijaan kompasanoja
naurunhohotuksineen…

Visulaista pidettiin tottuneena puhujana. Mutta nyt kun hänen piti


nousta lavalle, valtasi hänet sellainen tuskastuttava levottomuus ja
innottomuus, että hän aikoi astua sanaakaan puhumatta alas. Pysyi
hän kuitenkin paikoillaan, huomasi myöskin että muutamia
juhlayleisöstä vetäytyi nyt lavan etupuolelle vasiten häntä
kuulemaan. Niiden joukossa oli joitakuita isäntämiehiäkin ja samoin
vanhempia vaimo-ihmisiä. Tuo huomio herätti iloa: siinähän ilmeni
kohteliaisuutta, myötätuntoa…

"Kunnioitetut kansalaiset!"

(Samassa alkoi hanurinsoittaja uskollisesti vetää jotain


rekilaulunuottia tuolla, — toisaalla parvi tyttöjä kukersi ja riemuansa
piti).

"Oi rakas jumala, auta minua puhumaan näille ihmisille jotain


hyödyllistä", vilahti Visulaisen ajatuksissa ja sydämmessä vallitsi
palava rukouksen henki, aivan kuin olisi ollut hukkumaisillaan. Silloin
huomasi hän että kuulijainkin huomio oli kiintynyt hanurinsoittajaan ja
meluavaan tyttöparveen. Pari miestä lähti liikkeelle nähtävästi niitä
suhdittamaan. Toisten silmistä hehkui suuttumus.

Kaikki tämä tapahtui muutamissa silmänräpäyksissä. Visulainen


alkoi puhua.

Kun puhe oli päättynyt, kättenpaukutukset laanneet ja Jaakko


Huttunen käynyt häntä kädestä kiittämässä, pysähtyi Visulainen
istumaan yksikseen erään pensaston varjoon. Hän tunsi itsensä
kovin väsyneeksi ja jäseniin laskeusi veltto puutumus.
Nuorisoseuran Amerikkaan muuttava kirjuri nousi lavalle ja kehoitti
että laulettaisiin yhdessä "Maamme". Kehoituksessa ei ollut mitään
sukkelaa, eikä mitään naurettavaa, mutta moni suu vetäytyi hymyyn
aivan kuin olisi hyvinkin naurettavaa laulaa "Maamme"-laulu.

Visulainen tietysti nousi laulamaan. Joku sieltä, täältä yhtyi, mutta


mitään yhteislaulua ei siitä tullut. Tuskalla saatiin loppuun pari
värssyä… laulu ujui ja kuoli siihen aivan kuin väsymyksestä
uupuneena… "Saa nähdä, eikö nyt tule katovuosi", kuuli Visulainen
takanansa sanottavan, kääntyi ja näki siinä tanakan talonpojan.

"Saa nähdä", sanoi Visulainen, "hyvin se uhkaa."

"Kovin uhkaa", sanoi talonpoika ja ravisti päätä, "tänä vuonna


taitaa tulla Suomessa olemaan kaksinkertaiset hallat."

"Tuo mies tietää jotain!" ihastui Visulainen itsekseen… "Herra


Jumala, kun tässä pääsisikin lämpenemään!" vilahti kohottava
toivomus hänen ajatuksissaan mennessään kattelemaan miestä ja
puhelemaan tämän kanssa.
IV.

"Hyvä i-ihminen, katso nyt!"

"Mitä?"

"Kuinka natevana kirkkoherra on itse tuolla puuhaamassa karjan


keskellä."

"Hyvät ihmiset! ja takkinsakin on tuolla tavalla tahrinut."

"Hattu vaan on takaraivolla."

"Ja niin kovasti hikoilee."

"Voi paikkaa, eikö nyt muita olisi ollut?"

"Mennään katsomaan niiden karjaa."

Ja emännät lähtivät katselemaan pappilan uljasta karjaa. Tänään


oli, näetten, eläinnäyttely Rutakkalan kirkolla. Jotenkin runsas määrä
karjaa oli näytteille tuotu. Pappilasta oli kaksi eri sarjaa. Ne olivat
pulskeita elukoita! Oikein niitä mielikseen katseli, semmenkin kun
kirkkoherra oli itse mukana ja laski sopivia sukkeluuksia. Härkiä ja
sonneja ei oltu uskallettu tänne muun karjan joukkoon ryhmittää,
vaan oli niitä asetettu huoneisiin, joissa oli varmemmat
kiinnipitopaikat.

Päivä oli tänään poutainen. Ihmisiä, nuoria ja vanhoja, liikkui


varsin runsaasti näyttelypaikan tienoilla. Kaikkialla oli iloa ja juhlaista
mieltä. Eiliseen verraten tuntui siltä kuin vasta tänään olisi oltu oikein
juhlatuulella ja juhliminen oikealla pohjalla. Siltä se näytti
Visulaisestakin, joka oli jäänyt tänne karjanäyttelyä katselemaan.
Nuo miehet ja naiset, ne viihtyivät niin hyvin karjan parissa, nauttiva
hymy huulilla siirtyivät naudasta nautaan, tutkivat niiden
tuntomerkkiä ja niiden hyvyyksistä väittelivät.

Kokous-talon pihaan oli puhujalavakin rakennettu, köynnöksillä ja


kukilla koristettu. Siellä oli istuimia pihalle asetettuina ja lehtimajan
sisään virvoitusravintola järjestettynä.

Muuan agronomi nousi lavalle. Hänen oli määrä pitää esitelmä


pikkuvasikkain kasvatuksesta ja hoidosta. Kirkkoherralle tuli kiire
käteen, kun huomasi agronomin lavalle nousevan.

"Odottakaapa hiukan", kuiskasi ja viittasi hän sinne lavalle käsin,


juoksi yli pihan naisjoukkoon ja kuiskasi siellä piikansa korvaan:

"Mene sinä, Hilma, karjan luokse niin kauaksi että Karja-Maija


pääsee tänne kuulemaan esitelmää." Kun sitten pappilan Karja-
Maija ilmestyi naisten rintamaan, punottavana ja tuoreena, viittasi
kirkkoherra agronomille, joka alotti.

Kun esitelmä oli loppunut ja naiset olivat saaneet kyllikseen


naureskella sellaisille joutavuuksille, joita agronomi piti vasikkain
kasvatuksen elinehtona, — astui puhujapaikalle Visulainen. Hän
ilmoitti aikovansa puhua "hetken tapahtumista" tässä, kun kansaa oli
niin paljon koossa ja tapahtumat siksi tärkeitä… Ilma oli kaunis,
yleisö näytti verrattain tarkkaavaiselta ja puhuja alkoi lämmitä.

Kesken kaikkea hiipi kirkkoherran rouva kuiskaamaan Karja-


Maijan korvaan, että hän on "niin kovin levoton jos joku karjasta
repisi itsensä irti… että kyllä kai Maijan täytyy mennä sinne…"
"Onhan siellä Hilma. Eikähän ne nyt mitään erityistä, minä vaan
kuuntelisin tuon puheen loppuun."

"Eipähän siinä nyt mitään erinomaista tuossa puheessa… Onhan


Maija saanut lukea sanomalehdistä… Minä olen Tähden vuoksi niin
levoton." Karja-Maijan kasvoille ilmestyi tyytymättömyyden ilme ja
vastenmielisen näköisenä poistui hän joukosta. Rouva käänsi nyt
rauhoittuneena ja harrastavan näköisenä kasvonsa puhujaan.

Vaan silloin: Parkumäen suurta sonnia kuletettiin poikki


juhlakentän. Sonni mylvi ja mölysi, taluttajat huusivat ja melusivat.
Koko yleisö kääntyi katsomaan ja jäi ihailemaan sonnin väkevää
ruumista ja runtevia liikkeitä…

Visulainen korotti ääntään huutavan ääneksi, mutta se vavahti kun


huomasi, että suurin osa yleisöstä yhä pysyi selin häneen ja seurasi
katsein, jopa askelinkin uljasta sonnia. Sana takertui hänen
kurkkuunsa… Lavan ympärillä on muutamia ikämiehiä ja
nuorukaisia, jotka harrastuksella ovat puhetta seuranneet. Niistä yksi
toisensa jälkeen nyt kärsimättömänä katseensa kääntää tuonne
ihmisjoukkoon, jonka huomion sonni on niin täydellisesti vetänyt pois
puhujasta ja hetken tapahtumista…

Ja Visulainen astuu alas puhujalavalta, sillä sana ei ota enään


kieleltä lähteäkseen ja sydäntä kouristaa niin katkera tunne.

Jumala ties, minkä vuoksi hänen kasvoillaan on niin kummallinen


ilme.

"No mutta", sanovat miehet, "älkäähän nyt lopettako!" Ja useat


lähtevät hillitsemään sohinaa. Se olikin nyt jo helppoa, sillä sonni oli
kadonnut näköpiiristä ja yleisöllä oli joutilasta aikaa kuulla ja katsoa
Visulaista.

He saivat hänet pakoitetuksi uudestaan lavalle. Puheesta ei


kuitenkaan enään mitään tullut, ne olivat vaan hajanaisia,
kulmikkaita, kömpelöitä sanoja. "Tällaistako onkin todellisuus?"
kaikui ääni yhä hänen rinnassaan. Ponnistelemallakaan ei hän
saanut ajatuksiaan kokoon. Pettymys ja siitä johtuva tuska hajoittivat
kaikki tuulen tuvat ja sokaisivat innostuksen lähteet.

Hän astui alas puhujapaikalta yhä tuo kummallinen ilme kasvoilla.

"Siihenkö se nyt lopettikin?" kyselivät miehet toisiltaan. Mutta


Visulainen pakeni huoneitten takapuolelle ja itki.

Uusi välikirja.

Ruis, josta jaakonpäivähällä oli hienoimman terän vienyt, varisi


päistään Lampimäen pienissä kotipelloissa. Se joutui varisemaan
senvuoksi, että torpan isännällä oli ollut koko elokuun aikana
varsinaisten päivätöidensä lisäksi ylipäiviä kartanon elonleikkuussa.
Sitäpaitsi oli vaimo koko viikon kartanossa pyykinpesussa. Odotettiin
vapaapäiviä aivan kuin kuunnousua. Nyt oli perjantai. Vaimo oli jo
tänään päässyt puoliltapäivin kotiin. Miehen piti vihdoinkin saada
vapaapäivä huomenna. Silloin aijottiin ehtiä ruis jalalle, kun sopisi
leikata sunnuntaiaamunakin siihen saakka kuin kirkkoon mennään.

Lampimäkeläiset olivat keski-ikäisiä ihmisiä. Miehen nimi oli Pekka


ja vaimon nimi Liisa. Lapsia oli kolme.
Torppa oli metsässä, noin 5 kilometrin etäisyydellä kartanosta. Se
oli huono torppa ja huonosti siinä aina oli toimeen tultu.

Tämä nykyinen Pekka oli siinä asunut jo toista kymmentä vuotta.


Hän oli siitä omituinen, ettei koskaan valittanut, "ei silloinkaan kun
suoranaista vääryyttä kärsi", sanoivat toiset torpparit ja pitivät
Pekkaa tyhmempänä kuin itse olivat.

Oliko hän tyhmempi kuin toisetkaan, se ei suinkaan ollut sillä


ratkaistu, ettei hän valittanut.

Mutta tänään oli vaimo, kartanosta päästyään, rientänyt


juoksujalassa sirppineen pellolle, leikannut jo muutamia lyhteitä, kun
kimakka metsästäjän vihellys sai hänet säpsähtämään. Aivan
vieressä olevasta metsästä pistäysi aukealle kartanon pehtori
metsästystamineissa ja, koirien ympäri peltoja loikatessa, tuli
suoraan Lampimäen emännän luo.

"Jesus siunatkoon!" virkkoi vaimo, vääntäessään uutta lyhteen


sidettä.

Pehtori ei puhunut ohikulkiessaan mitään. Koirilleen hiljaa


viheltäen ja maklattaen, kävi istumaan mökin rapuille.

Vaimo näkyi taistelevan itsensä kanssa. Viimmein kuitenkin


huoahtaen löi sirppinsä lyhteen kantaan ja asteli tuvalle päin.

"Päivää," virkkoi ja niiasi.

Pehtori loi häneen pikaisen syrjäsilmäyksen, nyökäytti


äänettömästi, aivan kuin sivumennen, päätänsä ja alkoi innokkaasti
taputella koiraansa, hokien:
"Sesu, sesu, sesu…"

Vaimo liikkui peloissaan ja arvelevaisesti tupaa kohti, ikään kuin


joka askeleella odottaen puhuttelua. Vaan kun ei pehtori sittenkään
mitään sanonut, tuli vaimolta:

"Priita-Maija laski minut kotiin kello 3:lta, kun saatiin pyykki


valmiiksi ja… ja… kun nuo rukiin vähät pyrkivät varisemaan peltoon."

Pehtori pysyi yhä äänettömänä.

Vaimo astui pelokkaana askeleen tupaa kohti, mutta pysähtyi


sanomaan:

"On oikein paha, kun ei ole vieraalle tällä kertaa minkäänlaista


suunavausta."

Huomattava pilvi laskeusi pehtorin otsalle.

"Vai Priita-Maijako siellä nyt komentaa!" hän puoliääneen


huudahti.

"Eei suinkaan, mutta…"

Pehtori nousi, kutsui koirat ja lähti uudestaan metsään.

"Mitähän jumalan nimessä tästä tulee?" huokasi vaimo ja palasi


takaisin leikkuumaalle, jossa ruis rapisten varisi tähkäpäistä peltoon.

Illalla, kun Pekka palasi kartanosta työstä, tapasi hän puolitiessä


pehtorin. Hän asteli jokseenkin rivakasti siinä tiedossa, että nyt oli
edessä kaksi vapaapäivää, joina saisi korjata rukiinvähänsä peltoon
varisemasta. Niistä päivistä tosin toinen oli sunnuntai, jumalan
lepopäivä. Mutta Pekka ei viitsinyt edes harkita, olisiko sopiva leikata
varisevaa ruista lepopäivänä, — hän leikkaisi vaan…

Juuri siinä tuli pehtori vastaan. Pekka oli vähällä unhoittaa nostaa
lakkia, mutta onneksi kuitenkin huomasi sen. Pehtori oli jo astunut
ohitse, kun äkkiä kääntyi ja virkahti:

"Aivan oikein! — Olin vähällä unhottaa, — ne eivät varmaankaan


siellä sanoneet sinulle, että et voikaan saada vielä vapaapäivää.
Huomenna otat hevosen mukaasi ja tulet kartanoon tavalliseen
aikaan."

Enempää viivyttelemättä meni pehtoori tiehensä. Mutta Pekka


seisoi tiellä, hyvin tyhmistyneen näköisenä katsoen menevän
jälkeen, joka pian katosikin hämärään. Sitten kääntyi Pekka
verkalleen ja virkkoi ääneen:

"Saatana!"

Kun tämä mies tuli kotiin, oli jokseenkin pimeä. Vanhempi tyttö, 11
ikäinen, oli äitinsä kanssa leikkuupellolla, toinen, 8 vuotias keitti
puuroa ja 3 vuotias poika itkeä kyhni penkillä omia aikojaan.

Pekan ruokakontti lensi niin huimasti nurkkaan, että poikakin


hämmästyi ja lakkasi itkemästä. Mitään puhumatta lapsille otti hän
sirpin ja riensi leikkuupellolle. Kello oli silloin 10 illalla.

"Tapasitko pehtorin?" kysyi vaimo. "Tapasin."

"Mitä se sanoi?"

"Käski huomenna tulla hevospäivätyöhön."


"Kas sitä!"

"Samalla kuului ääni heidän takapuoleltaan:

"Päiveä Pietar-veli, ka yöhän tuota jo onkin. Miksi ette päivällä


leikkaa?"

Pekka kääntyi ja näki vanhastaan tutun miehen, reppu selässä ja


piikkisauva kädessä.

Pekan kasvoille ilmestyi leveä hymyily:

"Ka tuoko?" virkkoi hän. "Minä juuri ajattelin sinua."

"Minuako? Sepä kummaa!"

"Ajattelin sinua, että kun sinä tulisit. Sano nyt, joka tiedät, tuleeko
siitä maanjaosta jotain?"

"Ka miksei tulisi! Männäh tupah ja pistetäh shaijuks, niin juttu


paremmin luistaa."

Ja he menivät kaikin tupaan.

Tämän kartanon isäntäväki asui enimmät osat ajastaan


Helsingissä. Koko maatalous oli pehtorin huostassa, joka
tehtäväänsä hoiti rajattoman itsevaltiuden periaatteiden mukaan.

Torpparit olivat tämän nykyisen pehtorin alkuaikana pyrkineet


tekemään valituksia kartanonherralle suvella, kun tämä asui
maatilallaan. Mutta kun tilasta oli viimeaikoina yleensä tullut hyvät
tulot, ei isännällä ollut erityistä halua ruveta taistelemaan pehtoria
"vastaan torpparien puolesta, vaikka ymmärsikin, että pehtori
muutamissa suhteissa oli vaatimuksissa mennyt liian pitkälle. Hän
koetti arasti huomauttaa pehtorille, että hänen tahtonsa olisi, että
torppareita pitäisi kohdella säälien; mutta siitä pehtori riemastui
pitämään sellaisen esitelmän että…

"Noh, noh, älkäähän suuttuko, tehän sen parhaiten tiedätte…"

Mutta kerran alkoi kartanon torppaloukoilta kuulua aivan


uskomattomia juttuja. Helsingissä oleva isäntäväki oikein pelästyi.
Rouva ja nuori maisteri lähtivät maalle oikein keskitalvella ja veivät
mukanaan 50 markan panoksen kirjasia ja kotikoulutarpeita. Nuori
maisteri piti kartanon kansakoululla esitelmiä eräällä viikolla neljänä
iltana. Kaksi kotikoulua pantiin kuntoon ja kansakoulunopettaja otti
vaivakseen ilman eri palkkiota pitää silmällä niiden toimintaa.

Ja kun kaikki oli näin hyvästi järjestetty, palasivat asiantoimittajat


Helsinkiin.

"Jestande!… kuinka tyhmiä ne ovat!" huudahti rouva ensi


sanoikseen, kun oli junalta tultua istuttu perheen teepöytään.

"No sen tiesit mennessäsi", sanoi herra hymyillen. "Mitä muuta


kuuluu?"

"Ne eivät usko vaikka niille sanoisi mitä", kertoi poika.

"Vai eivät usko, — eivätkö sinunkaan puhettasi?"

"Minä pelkään, etteivät uskoneet Artturia. Ne näyttivät aivan


kauheilta… Ja, herra jumala, niin hyvät olot kun niillä on!… Koko
talvena eivät tarvitse tehdä paljon mitään… eikä ikänä ole pettua
tarvinnut syödä meidän kartanon maalla."
Kartanon isännän pää oli vaipunut käsien varaan ja otsa mennyt
huolikkaisiin ryppyihin.

"Onkohan heillä todella hyvät olot?" kysyi hän kummallisella


painolla.

"Kumminkin suhteellisesti", sanoi rouva, kiinnittäen terävän


katseen mieheensä.

"Esimerkiksi verrattuna meidän oloomme?"

"Meidän oloomme? Kuinka sellainen saattaa tulla


kysymykseenkään?"

"Miksikäs ei!"

"No mutta, hyvänen aika, Viktor…"

"Minä vaan ajattelen, että… kentiesi pitäisi minun helpottaa


torpparien vuokraehtoja. Ne eivät valittaisi, ne eivät olisi uskomatta
isäntänsä poikaa, jos niillä olisi hyvä…"

"Sama ajatus…" alotti nuori maisteri.

"Sama ajatus", keskeytti rouva käden viittauksella poikansa.


"Sama ajatus, josta Arttur ja minä jo eräänä iltana keskustelimme.
Mutta, jos niitä rupeisi alentamaan niin paljon, että se jossain
tuntuisi, täytyisi kai meidän supistaa menojamme. Ensi kesäksi on
suunniteltuna se ulkomaa-matkakin ja…"

"Siinäpä se juuri on!" virkahti kartanonomistaja ja teki


kärsimättömän liikkeen.
"Niin, siinä se on, mutta minä en usko että ne tulisivat sen
tyytyväisemmiksi, ne odottavat maanjakoa kuin uutta kuuta… ja
kansa, talonpojat ja torpparit yleensä ovat tulleet niin kopeiksi ja
vaativaisiksi, että ennen pitkää esittävät torpparit siellä sinulle veljen
maljoja." — Rouva nauroi. Nuori maisteri, joka oli nauttien loikonut
sohvalla sanomalehden kanssa, naurahti myöskin. Äiti oli tuon
saman sukkeluuden lausunut jo parille tuttavalle matkalla.

"Pehtori kertoi", alotti rouva, mutta herra keskeytti kärsimättömästi:

"Älkäämme puhuko hänestä!"

"Pehtoristammeko?"

"Hänestä juuri!" Herra nousi mennäkseen omaan huoneesensa.


"Minä pelkään", jatkoi hän, "että hän on tehnyt liiankin paljon syntiä
minun kontolleni."

"Kukin tekee syntiä omaan lukuunsa. Sinähän olet antanut hänelle


määräykset kohdella hyvin…"

"Hyvin — mutta minä alan pelätä, että hän on kohdellut


huonosti!… Isabella, miksi juuri minun maatilani torpparit antavat
aihetta sellaisiin sanomalehtijuttuihin?"

"No sitähän minäkin, että miksi juuri meidän?"

"Ihmiset kyllä ymmärtävät, että siinä on torpparien tyhmyys


suurena tekijänä, mutta ne eivät voi vapauttaa minua kokonaan siitä
syytöksestä, etten ole pitänyt huolta torpparieni valistuksen
kohottamisesta, enkä heidän tilansa parantamisesta."

"Se on totta", virkkoi nuori maisteri.


"Mutta hyvänen aika, vietiinhän nytkin viidenkymmenen markan
arvosta kirjoja ja kirjoitustarpeita. Opettajatar arveli…"

"Älä puhu, mamma! — anna anteeksi, että keskeytän. — Puheesi


tuntuu näissä oloissa liian yksinkertaiselta. Meidän olisi pitänyt
alottaa torpparien kanssa jo 20 vuotta takaperin, — siinä koko juttu."

"Ehkä minä lähden sinne uudestaan, isä", sanoi nuori maisteri ja


kiinnitti vakavat silmänsä isään.

"Mitä tekemään?"

"Jakamaan heille tietoja."

"Mutta omat lukusi…" alkoi äiti.

"Väli niillä", keskeytti isä. "Ehdotustasi maksaa vaivan ajatella. Kun


loppuisi tämä talvikausi pikemmin, niin minä rientäisin itse sinne…
Herra Jumala! kun minä olen melkein aivan vieras omien torpparieni
kanssa…"

"Mutta minäpä melkein luulen, että sinä menet juomaan heidän


kanssaan veljesmaljoja!" nauroi rouva.

"Isabella, minä melkein luulen, että sinä otat asian liian keveältä
kannalta."

"No, mutta hyvä Viktor, eihän sitä nyt maksa vaivaa ottaa noin
kauhean synkästi! Tietäähän koko Helsinki, että perheemme kuuluu
huomattavimpiin tosi-isänmaallisiin perheisiin. Jos torpparit meidän
tilallamme — jota eivät monet tiedä, että ne ovat juuri meidän
tilallamme, — jos ne yksinkertaisuudessaan antautuvat
epäisänmaallisen yllytyksen valtaan, niin emmehän me heitä ole
opettaneet."

"Ei, mutta me emme ole tehneet mitään sitä estääksemme ja…


No, se ei ole pääasia mitä ihmiset sanovat, vaan se, mitä todella on.
Sitä paitsi, minä olen lukenut Työmiestä ja…"

"Viktor!"

"Niin, niin."

"Ei mutta, Viktor, nyt minä suutun!"

Poika tirkisti sohvalta silmiänsä sirristäen ja isä naurahti:

"Minä olen päättänyt ottaa selkoa. Ja sen johdosta olen jo melkein


kumonnut yhden tulevan kesän suunnitelmistani."

"Ulkomaa-matkan?"

"Niin, katsos…"

"Kiitos, minä en katso mitään! Tässä saanen minäkin kohta astua


pyykkiä pesemään työmiehen matammin rinnalle, ettei kenelläkään
olisi aihetta kadehtia minua."

"Minä vaan tahdoin sanoa, että te kyllä saatte tehdä ulkomaa-


matkan, mutta minun tehtäväni on ensi suvena oppia tuntemaan
torpparini ja heidän elämänehtonsa."

Hän meni huoneesensa ja alkoi siellä edestakaisin kävellä.

Myöhemmin talvella, muutamalla hiihtoretkellä, ollessaan maalla
osuivat kartanon nuori maisteri ja hänen toverinsa pistäytymään
Pekan mökkiin.

"Onko tämä torppa vielä kartanon alle kuuluvia?" kysyi maisteri.

Pekka katsoi luihusti, syrjittäin seisovia herroja, joita ei näyttänyt


huvittavan istahtaa. Akkakin jo loi kiirehtivän silmäyksen mieheensä.
Pekka vihdoin virkkoi:

"Onhan tämä vielä… onhan siellä töissä oltu melkein


yhtämyötään."

"Minä olinkin tuntevinani teidät", äänsi maisteri.

"Va-ai niin", hymyili Pekka.

"Jottako maisteri tuntisi näinkin köyhiä?" ihmetteli vaimo omituisen


yksinkertaisesti.

"Eihän se köyhyyteen tahi rikkauteen kuulu, sellainen."

"Kuuluupa hyvinkin. Ihmeeksi se on kun rikkaat ja mahtavat köyhiä


ja kurjia tuntevat", intti vaimo.

"Kurjia?" kysyi ylioppilas. "Pidättekö te itsenne kurjina? Teillä on


oma tupa, hyvä isäntäväki, puuttumaton toimeentulo. Siivoutta vaan,
joka ei maksa mitään ja joka riippuu teistä itsestänne, saisi olla
enempi. Sitäpaitsi teillä on isänmaa. Käsitättekö mitä se on?"

Maisteri vetäysi syrjään kuultelemaan.

Mies ja vaimo vaihtoivat katseita.


"Ei tämä ole minun isänmaani", alotti Pekka onealla äänellä.
"Minun isäni oli tuolla kartanon Länsikulman torpassa torpparina,
tästä on sinne 2 1/2 peninkulmaa. Se joutui pois, kun isä kuoli eikä
äiti jaksanut suorittaa vuokraa. Kävin sitten kerjuulla, kunnes äiti
kuoli. Sinne isänimaalle aina ikävöin ja siinä olin sitte paimenenakin
Simunalla, joka sen oli saanut. Kun mieheksi tulin, esitti kartanon
silloinen pehtori minulle tämän. Minä tulin tähän ja tuo akka tuli
vähän jälestäpäin…"

"Ja kyllä on ollut elämisen kanssa niin ja näin, niin että ei tässä
kurjuus ole kovinkaan vieras", selitti vaimo.

"Niin, mutta te nyt käsititte väärin, isänmaa on jotain toista kuin se


torpanmaa, jonka päällä on syntynyt", alotti ylioppilas selittää.

Pekka kuunteli. Kun selitys oli loppunut, kysäsi viimemainittu


yht’äkkiä:

"Mahtaneeko tullakaan mitään siitä isosta maanjaosta?"

Vaimo säpsähti, mutta miehen suu meni salaperäiseen,


odottavaan hymyyn. Näki, että tähän kysymykseen sulkeutui
kokonaan hänen nykyinen ajatuspiirinsä.

"Ei tule, hyvä mies. Ja toivoisitteko tekin todella…" Hän alkoi


jutella lämpimästi ja istahti tolpalle.

Mutta kun vieraat menivät, räjähti Pekka leveään nauruun:

"Hätäpä niillä näyttää olevan, noilla… Eipä vaan taidakaan olla


niin tyhjää juttua, se maanjakojuttu."
Kesällä, muutamana sunnuntaipäivänä oli kartanon alustalaisia
varten hommattu oikein suuret juhlat. Torpparit oli käyty kutsumassa,
erikseen joka huonekunta. Ne tulivat, katselivat ja kuultelivat silmät
ympyriäisinä. Ja kun muuan puhe oli pidetty, puri Pekka lisää
ryssänlehtiä suuhunsa ja sanoi Simunalle:

"Kyllä ne vaan osaavat saarnata."

"Hätäkö näiden on osata, kun kaiken ikänsä kouluja käyvät."

Se jäi siihen.

Kello läheni 11:sta ja juhla lopetettiin. Käsi tukan rajassa läheni


Pekka muuatta torpparia ja kysäsi:

"Aijotko kotiin, vai jäätkö sitä oloa jo kartanoon?"

"Ruoat ovat kotona, eikä siellä ole ken toisi. Makaamisen aikaa ei
tässä kyllä jää ollenkaan. Kello 4 pitää olla takaisin", jutteli mies
synkästi.

"Sama on minun", selitti Pekka.

"Kun ei se vaan panisi huomiseksi tinkityötä."

"Senpä se kyllä osaa panna."

Molemmat katselivat varpaisiinsa. Läheni kolmas torppari ja alkoi


tosissaan kysellä, vuorotellen toista ja toista silmäillen:

"Mahtavatko arenttipäiväksi tämän päivän merkitä kirjoihinsa?"
