What happens in a Dual-Language Classroom?

● Dual Language Bilingual Education (DLBE)

○ A type of bilingual education where the objective is for
students to become bilingual and biliterate and achieve
academically through two languages
● One-Way vs. Two-Way
○ One-Way: all students have a common home language
○ Two-Way: students are learning English and another language
● Must follow Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and English
Language Development (ELD) Standards for emergent bilinguals
What did Carla do before Translanguaging?

❖ Taught never to use it for instruction although she always felt

comfortable using it; saw its value in intercultural communication
❖ Told never to put the different language practices alongside each
other in dual language education
❖ Strictly taught Spanish in the morning and English in the afternoon
❖ Corrected students when they spoke the “wrong” language at the
“wrong” time
❖ Never brought multilingual resources into the classroom- Spanish
during Spanish Time and English during English Time
How did Carla implement Translanguaging?
What did Carla take away from Translanguaging?

★ Students will always use features from different language to make

meaning
★ Instead of “policing” which language was used where, she
encouraged students to use their entire language repertoires to
learn and demonstrate what they had learned
★ Now allowed flexibility in student language use → benefits
★ Introduced a routine called “Cuentame algo”
○ Time for bilingual storytelling when a translanguaging literacy
activity takes center stage
How can you implement Translanguaging in your Classroom?

Using multiple
Having more
