Modern Empires focuses on the diverse aspects of empire: its chaotic and
unpredictable nature; its wide-ranging cast of characters; and its global power
brokers. Coming from many imperial centers, the primary documents show the
entanglement of empires beyond the usual European players. Thus, selections from
China, Japan, Afghanistan, and Congo are interwoven not just with one another
but with those from the more conventional European players. Testimony from
those often marginalized in the story of empire stand side by side with pronounce-
ment from rulers and other imperial celebrities. Primary sources from soldiers,
women, slaves, and other subalterns provide a balanced and expansive resource
from which readers can construct a more up-to-date imperial history. They offer
the material for an understanding of globalization, attempts at world governance,
and imperialism’s lasting legacy in today’s world. These original sources encourage
the reader to analyze the various actions of individuals and evaluate the impact of
their decisions on imperial systems and historical outcomes. It shows what it was
like to live in a world of empires and to shape them.
Modern Empires consists of an Introduction and 12 chapters. The chapters
are organized chronologically, and each chapter focuses on a theme that animates
the period being examined. Chapters begin with a general introduction, with each
document preceded by a headnote. To help readers approach the documents,
headnotes pose questions for them to consider, while review questions that ask for
comparisons of several documents end each chapter. The final review question in
each chapter asks for an evaluation of a visual source found on the web. The URLs
where the images reside can also be found at www.oup.com/us/smith
This reader aims to bring students an up-close view of 500 years of interac-
tions not only among empires and other political regimes but among a selection of
the world’s diverse peoples. Students will also find justifications for conquest along
with the bitter effects and aftereffects of imperial rule. Anonymous reviewers of
the collection have offered sage advice on the composition of this collection, for
which I am especially grateful. That advice is reflected in the pages ahead. Several
