JILLAINE MARIE BOLAGAO SOCSTUD-2B Movie Analysis 05/21/24

EVERY CHILD IS SPECIAL

(Taare Zameen Par)
CHARACTERS: Ishaan Awasthi – Darsheel Satary
Ram Nikumbh (Ishaan’s Teacher) – Aamir Khan
Maya Awasthi (Ishaan’s Mother) – Tisca Chopra
Nandkishore Awasthi (Ishaan’s Father) – Vipin Sharma
Yohaan Awasthi (Ishaan’s Brother) – Sachet Engineer
OVERVIEW:
There was a boy named Ishaan Awasthi who struggled academically. He couldn't read or
write, and he was frequently bullied by other children due to his slow learning ability. As a result,
his father enrolled him in a boarding school at the age of nine. In his new school, he encountered
various challenges and experienced feelings of loneliness. Fortunately, a temporary art teacher at
the school came to his aid, helping him build bravery and self-confidence.
NARRATIVE/ANALYSIS:
Ishaan Awasthi, a nine-year-old boy, is struggling academically, resulting in his teacher
frequently punishing him. Other kids in the school witness his punishments, and they laugh at
him. Even when his mother tries to teach him at home, he struggles to spell words correctly.
Comparisons to his brother, Yohaan, by teachers and other people further lower his confidence.
Due to the numerous problems he faces at school and in the neighborhood, his father,
Nandkishore, decides to send him to a boarding school.
In this new environment, Ishaan feels incredibly lonely and depressed, which leads to a
decline in his once happy and artistic nature. He becomes a silent and sad child, only to
experience a change when his strict art teacher leaves the school and is replaced by a temporary
teacher named Ram Nikumbh. Ram is a teacher at Tulip School, which caters to special needs
students. He notices Ishaan's loneliness and becomes aware of the notes and paintings Ishaan has
made, leading him to suspect that Ishaan may have dyslexia, a learning disorder that affects
reading and writing abilities. Some words in Ishaan's notes are written upside down, further
supporting Ram's theory.
Taking initiative, Ram visits Ishaan's family to learn more about him and examines his
notes and paintings. Through this process, he confirms that Ishaan indeed has dyslexia. Ram then
helps Ishaan excel in school, obtaining approval from the principal to provide him with the
necessary support. As a result, Ishaan's academic performance improves significantly.
Additionally, Ram nurtures Ishaan's artistic talent, resulting in Ishaan winning the Sundar
Workshop, an art competition involving all students in the school.
One line from the movie that resonates with me is when Ram Nikumbh says, "Each child
has unique skills, capabilities, and dreams." It serves as a reminder that every child possesses
their own distinct abilities. Instead of becoming frustrated with our children or siblings for their
slower academic progress, we should remember that they each have their own unique talents.
Instead of forcing them into pursuits they dislike, we should aim to support their personal
interests and help them become good individuals. When we relate this to our subject of Reading
Visual Art, it highlights how some individuals express their emotions and feelings through art.
Inspiration and color often play significant roles in their creative expressions.
JILLAINE MARIE BOLAGAO SOCSTUD-2B Movie Analysis 05/21/24
CORALINE
CHARACTERS: Coraline Jones – voiced by Dakota Fanning
Mr. Jones/Other Mother – voiced by Teri Hatcher
Mrs. Jones/Other Father – voiced by John Hodgman
The Cat – voiced by Keith David
Wybie Lovat – voiced by Robert Bailey Jr.
OVERVIEW:
The Jones family moves into an old house known as Pink Palace Apartment. They have a
single child named Coraline, who is a stubborn, clever, and adventurous kid. Coraline's mother,
in particular, frequently scolds her, leading Coraline to occasionally wish for a different mother.
As Coraline explores their new home, she stumbles upon a small door in the living room that will
ultimately alter her life.
NARRATIVE/ANALYSIS:
There is a beautiful house with a garden called Pink Palace Apartment where a family
will be living. The family consists of three members: Mr. Jones, Mrs. Jones, and their only child,
Coraline. When they first move into the house, Coraline, being a stubborn child, explores the
area outside and finds herself near a scary forest. While there, she hears a sound that frightens
her and encounters a new friend named Wybie Lovat, whom she initially finds strange. Coraline
vents her frustrations to his mother about what happened. She also tries to express her concerns
to her father but is encouraged to simply explore the house as her father is busy working.
During her exploration, she discovers a small door in the living room. She asks her
mother to open it, but it turns out to be a solid wall. That night, she is awakened by the noise of
mice and follows them to the small door. Being adventurous, she goes through the door and finds
herself in a parallel version of her living room. She smells a delicious aroma coming from the
kitchen and discovers that her "Other Mother" has button eyes. Despite feeling uneasy, Coraline
stays and eventually goes to sleep. Her dream is suddenly interrupted when she realizes she is
still in the other dimension. This becomes a recurring pattern, and Coraline feels compelled to
return to the other world to visit her dream parents.
As time goes on, the Other Mother suggests sewing button eyes onto Coraline to make
her a part of their family, but she refuses and flees in fear. She forces herself to sleep, hoping to
wake up in the real world, but nothing changes. In desperation, she ventures outside and
encounters her button-eyed friend, Wybie, who helps her escape from the clutches of the Other
Mother. However, when Coraline returns to her world, she discovers that her parents have been
kidnapped by the Other Mother. Determined to rescue them, Coraline returns to the other
dimension and faces the three imprisoned souls whom she had encountered before. Her parents
are locked inside a Christmas globe, which she takes and uses to escape from the Other Mother.
She hides the key to the small door in the well where she originally met Wybie.
This story helped me understand the importance and love we have for our parents. Even
when they scold us often, we shouldn't forget that they still love us deeply. It's crucial for parents
to spend time with their children to help them grow into good individuals, as not having parents
can be incredibly challenging. If we connect this to our subject of Reading Visual Arts, it
highlights the different ways we can express art. In the case of the movie Coraline, clay motion
was used to create figures and tell a beautiful story.
