Notes
1. I like to buy my black safety eyes from etsy.com, aliexpress.com, hobbii.com, or the local craft
store. The safety eyes are recommended but can be substituted with felt or embroidered eyes.
2. This pattern is crocheted in continuous rounds (you will not join each round).
3. In my patterns, I begin each circle with “ch 2, 8 sc in first ch.” Another way of beginning is to start
with a magic circle. If you are more familiar with this method, just do 8 sc into your magic circle.
4. Single crochet decrease stitch explanation: Insert the hook into the next stitch and yarn over.
Pull a loop through so that there are now 2 loops on the hook. Insert the hook into the next
stitch and yarn over. Pull a loop through so that there are now 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over
again and pull the loop of yarn through all 3 loops on the hook.
Instructions
Head
With yellow yarn,
R1: Ch 2, 8 sc in first ch (8 sts)
R2: 2 sc in each st around (16 sts)
R3: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st) 8 times (24 sts)
R4: (Sc 3, 2 sc in next st) 6 times (30 sts)
R5: (Sc 4, 2 sc in next st) 6 times (36 sts)
R6: (Sc 5, 2 sc in next st) 6 times (42 sts)
R7-11: Sc 42 (42 sts x 5 rounds)
R12: (Sc 6, 2 sc in next st) 6 times (48 sts)
R13: Sc 48 (48 sts)
R14: (Sc 6, dec 1) 6 times (42 sts)
R15: (Sc 5, dec 1) 6 times (36 sts)
R16: (Sc 4, dec 1) 6 times (30 sts)
R17: (Sc 3, dec 1) 6 times (24 sts)
R18: (Sc 2, dec 1) 6 times (18 sts)
Fasten off. Stuff the head. Insert the safety eyes between
R12-R13, with 7 sts in between (Figure 1). Wait to attach the
washers to the backs of the eyes until you have made the
muzzle; this is easier for checking placement.
Figure 1: Eye Placement
Muzzle
With white yarn,
R1: Ch 2, 8 sc in first ch (8 sts)
R2: 2 sc in each st around (16 sts)
R3: (Sc 7, 2 sc in next st) 2 times (18 sts)
R4-5: Sc 18 (18 sts x 2 rounds)
Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing. Begin sewing this
muzzle between the eyes, so that the top of the muzzle is 2
rounds above the tops of the eyes. Just before you finish
sewing it on, fill the muzzle with stuffing.
After sewing on the muzzle, check that the eyes are spaced
right beside the muzzle on either side; then firmly press the
washers onto the backs of the eyes.
Horns (x2)
Figure 3: Eye Detail
With light brown yarn,
R1: Ch 2, 6 sc in first ch (6 sts)
R2: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st) 3 times (9 sts)
R3: Sc 9 (9 sts)
R4: (Sc 1, dec 1) 3 times (6 sts)
Switch to yellow yarn,
R5-7: Sc 6 (6 sts x 3 rounds)
Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing. Stuff only the ball
ends of the horns with a bit of stuffing. Then sew the horns to
the top of the head, 1-2 rounds down from the beginning
circle (Figure 4). See Vid #2 on the Materials page for a video
explanation of sewing on the horns and ears.
Ears (x2)
With yellow yarn,
R1: Ch 2, 4 sc in first ch (4 sts)
Figure 4: Horns and Ears Placement
R2: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st) 2 times (6 sts)
R3: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st) 3 times (9 sts)
Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing. Do not stuff the ears.
Sew the ears 2-3 rounds down from the horns on either side
of the head (Figure 4).
Body
With yellow yarn,
R1: Ch 2, 8 sc in first ch (8 sts)
R2: 2 sc in each st around (16 sts)
R3: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st) 8 times (24 sts)
R4: (Sc 3, 2 sc in next st) 6 times (30 sts)
R5-8: Sc 30 (30 sts x 4 rounds)
R9: (Sc 3, dec 1) 6 times (24 sts)
R10: (Sc 2, dec 1) 6 times (18 sts)
R11-15: Sc 18 (18 sts x 5 rounds) Figure 5: Closing the Arm
Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing. Stuff the body. Sew
the body to the head.
Arms (x2)
With light brown yarn,
R1: Ch 2, 8 sc in first ch (8 sts)
R2: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st) 4 times (12 sts)
R3-4: Sc 12 (12 sts x 2 rounds)
R5: (Sc 2, dec 1) 3 times (9 sts)
Figure 6: Finished Arm
Switch to yellow,
R6-10: Sc 9 (9 sts x 5 rounds)
Now, before fastening off, stuff the arms. Then single crochet
through both layers of the arm to close it - 4 sc sts across the
top (Figure 5). Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing
(Figure 6).
Position the arms onto the body (3 rounds down from the
head, starting at R12 of the body) at an angle indicated by the
black line in Figure 7; sew the arms to the sides of the body. Figure 7: Arm Placement
Legs (x2)
With light brown yarn,
R1: Ch 2, 8 sc in first ch (8 sts)
R2: 2 sc in each st around (16 sts)
R3: (Sc 7, 2 sc in next st) 2 times (18 sts)
R4-5: Sc 18 (18 sts x 2 rounds)
R6: (Sc 4, dec 1) 3 times (15 sts)
R7: (Sc 3, dec 1) 3 times (12 sts)
Switch to yellow,
R8: (Sc 4, dec 1) 2 times (10 sts)
R9-13: Sc 10 (10 sts x 5 rounds)
As with the arms, wait to fasten off. Stuff the legs. Crochet the
tops of the legs closed as you did with the arms - 5 sc sts
across. Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing. Now sew the
legs to the bottom of the body, right next to each other on
top of the beginning circle of the body (Figure 8). It is
important to sew the legs so close together that they are
touching at the top, so that the legs fall next to each other
when the giraffe is being held upright – instead of sticking out
to the sides.
Tail
With light brown yarn,
R1: Ch 2, 8 sc in first ch (8 sts)
R2: 2 sc in first st, sc 7 (9 sts)
R3: Sc 9 (9 sts)
R4: (Sc 1, dec 1) 3 times (6 sts)
Figure 8: Leg and Tail Placement
Switch to yellow,
R5-8: Sc 6 (6 sts x 4 rounds)
Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing. Stuff the ball end of
the tail with a little bit of stuffing. The tail will balance the
giraffe so it sits up. Hold the tail in place on your giraffe to see
just where the tail needs sewn to enable it to sit up (I sewed
mine to R3-4). Sew the tail to the body.
Spots!
See Vid #3 on the Materials page for a video about sewing on Figure 9: Sewing on the Spots
the spots and securing your yarn afterwards.
When you are finished sewing on the spots, secure your yarn
by weaving it through to the where the beginning yarn tail is;
tie the 2 ends in a knot and weave them inside the body.
And there you go, you are finished! Thank you so much for
joining me in making this plush giraffe. Enjoy!
