Activity 3: Modular Jack Termination

Introduction:
This laboratory activity is intended to familiarize participants with the process of terminating
modular jacks used in telecommunications and networking applications. Participants will learn how to
terminate cables with modular plugs to ensure proper data transmission. The activity will cover the
necessary steps for terminating modular jacks, such as cable preparation, wire termination, and
testing.

Learning Objective:
The objective of this laboratory activity is to enable students to:
1. Understand the components and anatomy of modular jacks.
2. Learn the step-by-step process of terminating modular jacks onto cables.
3. Practice cable preparation, wire termination, and testing procedures.
4. Gain proficiency in terminating modular jacks for various networking applications.

Materials and Equipment:

1. CAT6 Ethernet (LAN) Cable – 1 meter
2. Modular Jack – 2 pieces
3. Cable Strippers
4. Wire Cutter
5. Cable Puncher/ Punch Down Tool
6. LAN/ Network Cable Tester

Procedure:
1. Cable Preparation
a. Strip the outer jacket of the Ethernet cable using cable strippers, exposing the inner wires.
b. Untwist and arrange the color-coded wires according to the T568A or T568B wiring
standard.
c. Maintain the correct wire sequence for proper connectivity.
2. Wire Termination
a. Insert the wires into the appropriate slots of the modular jack.
b. Use of a Cable Puncher/ Punch Down Tool to secure the wires in place and trim any
excess wire.
3. Testing
a. Insert the terminated Ethernet cables into the cable tester.
b. Verify the continuity and integrity of connection.

Results & Discussions:

1. Attach a picture of your final output.

2. Attach a picture of your final output undergoing testing.

3. Enumerate the lighting sequence of the LAN/ Network Cable Tester of your final output.
