Combien de jours y a-t-il que je vis seul ? Quelque temps après
le départ de Ceintras, j’ai été accablé par une terrible maladie qui
m’a causé une longue crise de délire et d’inconscience. Comment ai-
je soutenu ma vie, comment ai-je pu résister au manque de
soins ?… Je ne sais rien, sinon que je me suis éveillé un jour comme
d’un pénible sommeil, que je me suis levé à grand’peine du parquet
de la cabine où j’étais étendu, que je suis sorti, très faible, criblé de
douleurs et à moitié perclus de froid, et qu’il me semblait, devant le
paysage du Pôle, n’avoir connu qu’en rêve ou dans une autre vie les
hommes et la civilisation humaine : « C’est bien cela, pensai-je en
toute sincérité : chacune des existences successives que nous
subissons est un songe plus ou moins affreux, mais il faut bien qu’on
s’éveille un jour… Quand donc m’éveillerai-je de ce songe ?… »
Je ne sais rien, sinon que ce doit être, en ce moment, sur la
banquise, l’hiver et la grande nuit qui dure six mois. Au delà des
murailles de brume, au lieu de l’infini amoncellement de vagues
blancheurs que j’apercevais jadis, il n’y a plus que de l’ombre. Le
fantôme de soleil qui s’éternisait récemment encore à l’horizon ne se
montre plus jamais, et aux heures où s’évanouit la clarté violette, les
nuits sont profondément noires sous le ciel éclaboussé de myriades
d’astres.
Je ne sais rien… Un seul espoir me soutint durant ma
convalescence : celui de la venue probable d’autres explorateurs
dans ce monde-ci… Je me rappelais que c’était au cours de l’été de
1906 que Wellmann et ses compagnons devaient prendre leur vol au
Spitzberg ; peut-être que si les ressources de leur savoir, de leur
courage et de leur énergie toute fraîche se joignaient un jour à ma
connaissance actuelle du pays, il nous serait possible d’en repartir
ensemble à notre gré et de n’y revenir par la suite qu’avec la
certitude d’agir en maîtres… Et je me mis à guetter inlassablement à
tous les coins du ciel l’apparition d’un immense oiseau de toile et de
métal semblable à celui qui nous avait jadis amenés au Pôle.
Mais l’été, sans doute, était encore très lointain et, si je voulais
vivre jusque-là, il fallait à toute force abandonner le campement
actuel et m’établir vers le centre du pays polaire, en un lieu où la
température fût plus clémente… Dès que mes forces me le
permirent, je démontai la cabine et je commençai à la traîner peu à
peu, avec les provisions qui me restaient encore et quelques objets
indispensables, vers la petite colline au pied de laquelle j’avais
résolu d’habiter. Ce travail me demanda beaucoup de temps et de
peines… Mais, si puéril que cela puisse paraître en la circonstance,
j’éprouvai, lorsque j’en fus venu à bout et que j’eus pris possession
de mon nouveau domaine, une satisfaction analogue à celle de
l’humble travailleur qui va finir ses jours à la campagne, dans une
petite maison, fruit de ses économies…
La vie du monde polaire avait repris son cours normal, et bientôt
les événements m’obligèrent à ne plus craindre de représailles de la
part des monstres. Avaient-ils oublié déjà, pardonnaient-ils,
n’osaient-ils pas se venger ? Entre ces suppositions toutes gratuites
et bien d’autres du même genre, la dernière de celles que j’indique
était à coup sûr la moins fondée. Il y a bien des chances pour que le
besoin de vengeance soit une infirmité spéciale à l’âme humaine.
Les espèces animales dites supérieures connaissent comme nous la
colère, mais ignorent le ressentiment. — Tandis que je procédais à
mon installation, les monstres ne cessèrent pas de venir m’observer
et, le jour où elle fut terminée, il y eut grand palabre devant ma
porte… Après quoi ils continuèrent à aller et à venir autour de moi
sans manifester beaucoup plus de méfiance que par le passé.
C’est durant cette période de tranquillité relative que j’ai classé et
complété les notes que voici. Un jour, ayant poussé très loin ma
promenade en suivant le cours du fleuve, je parvins à un endroit où,
après un coude très brusque, il atteignait les régions du froid,
charriait des glaçons dans ses flots devenus soudain très rapides,
puis disparaissait sous la banquise elle-même. La mer sans doute
doit être très voisine et se perpétuer au dessous des glaces
éternelles jusqu’à l’Océan Arctique. Auparavant, je n’avais rédigé
ces mémoires que pour passer le temps ou pour me débarrasser
quelque peu de mes idées accablantes en les jetant sur le papier ;
après cette importante découverte, persuadé qu’il y avait quelque
espoir de faire parvenir un message aux hommes, j’ai poursuivi mon
travail avec plus de méthode et d’acharnement.
Je n’ai plus rien à ajouter. Je ne me crois même pas le droit de
garder plus longtemps ce document par devers moi, n’eût-il qu’une
chance sur mille d’être retrouvé un jour par mes semblables et de
leur profiter.
Je sens à présent me quitter l’espérance et la vie. Mes forces
diminuent de jour en jour, mes provisions sont presque épuisées ; je
ne bougerai plus, je tenterai surtout de ne plus penser en attendant
l’ombre éternelle…
Mais pourrai-je ne plus penser ? Je demeure des heures durant
immobile, assis ou couché au penchant de la colline et, comme il
arrive aux agonisants, les souvenirs de mon existence passée se
présentent à moi avec une douloureuse précision. Je revois de clairs
horizons, d’humbles et gaies maisonnettes à l’orée des bois, je
pense à des villes dont les noms seuls évoquent le soleil et la joie de
vivre… Des enfants dansent des rondes, des femmes sourient aux
balcons, les fleurs s’ouvrent et embaument… En ce moment, dans
mon pays, la fête du printemps doit battre son plein… Et voilà les
trésors, les dons ineffables du destin que j’ai méprisés, que j’ai
abandonnés pour aller de gaîté de cœur au devant du plus
effroyable et du plus compliqué des suicides ! Ah ! si j’avais le
courage de hâter ma fin, de mettre un terme à la torture de ce
regret !…
Récemment, — lamentable pèlerinage ! — j’ai voulu me traîner
jusqu’au ballon… Il n’en restait plus rien ; les monstres, comprenant
que je l’avais abandonné à jamais, l’ont démonté pièce à pièce et
emporté dans leurs demeures, comme ils avaient déjà fait lors de la
venue d’un autre que moi. Je crois que cette curiosité sournoise, ce
besoin d’apprendre et de se rendre compte à l’écart, en silence, est
un des traits les plus accusés de leur caractère. Ont-ils d’autres
intentions ? Veulent-ils profiter de nos inventions pour tenter
prochainement une expédition chez les hommes ? Je me borne à
rapporter les faits sans me hasarder à conclure.
Dans un instant je vais partir le long du fleuve, et j’y jetterai, aussi
près que possible de la banquise, le bidon d’essence où je vais
glisser cette feuille après les autres. Que mon dernier mot ne soit
pas seulement un adieu, mais un cri de fraternité sorti d’un cœur
repentant à l’adresse des hommes, — des hommes qui, au delà des
murs de ma prison, aiment, travaillent, souffrent, vivent et meurent
comme j’aurais dû le faire moi-même, — et puisse Dieu, pour que
mon orgueilleuse folie n’ait pas du moins été inutile, guider ce
message et permettre qu’il arrive à temps !
