Imagine a young married woman, Mary, sitting in front of you. She has come to
you in the hope that you will be able to help her. In the midst of tears she tells
you her problem.

Mary: “I don’t know what’s wrong with my marriage. We seem to be quarrelling all
the time. These days he doesn’t seem to like anything I do: my work, the way I
handle the children, even the way I dress. I try very hard, but nothing, nothing
seems to please him.”

Write down your very FIRST RESPONSE to Mary and keep it aside.

Rate the following counselor-responses given by various counselors as

• Ineffective
• Somewhat effective
• Effective

Counselor-responses
1. “You are saying that your marriage is not going well and your relationship
with your husband has deteriorated very much. He does not seem to
appreciate anything you do. You are doing the best you know but without
success in satisfying him.”
2. “Why do you quarrel like that? You must be patient with him and love him.”
3. “Tell me, were you really in love before you got married?”
4. “Don’t worry. Everything will be OK. This too will pass.”
5. “It seems that you all were never in love in the first place. You also seem to
be emotionally dependent on him and lack self-esteem.”
6. “You are not the only one in this situation. This is a common occurrence in
a marriage.”
7. “You feel so hurt, because your husband is constantly displeased with you
about everything.”

In the light of the discussion, rate your own FIRST RESPONSE to Mary.
You are now aware of your understanding of counseling, and are ready to
commence learning the Robert Carkhuff model.
