TRANSFORMER OIL TESTING USING KIT

AIM
To setup the transformer oil testing kit and to test the dielectric strength of insulating oil used in
transformers.

COMPONENTS REQUIRED
Oil testing kit of the following specifications is only required:
INPUT : 230V, 1 PHASE, 50Hz AC SUPPLY
OUTPUT : 0-60 KV (Centre tap earthed)
CAPACITY: 1 KVA (intermittend)

CONSTRUCTION
All the components are housed and rugged devices are mounted on the front slanted panel .HT
output terminal are provided on the top plates. These HT electrodes are shaped suitably to
accommodate the test cup easily Test cup can bear approximately 350 ml of the oil to be tested
A transparent hood made of plastic is provided on the top of test cup to automatically cut off
the HT supply when the hood lifted from its position. The mains 230V AC input supply
controlled by an ON/OFF switch is fed to continuously variable voltage autotransformer is fed to
primary of HT transformer through an air break contactor which is controlled by front panel
mounted push button. (The HT windings in 2 sections are wound in opposite directions, also the
starting ends are earthed through a sensing current transformer and other ends are connected
to HT electrodes)
The kit is a portable one so that we can be taken into the site. It is
just kept on a suitable height and insert the 3 pin plug into 5A socket
PROCEDURE
1. Adjust the gap between electrodes to 2.5 mm by the guage provided.
2. Fill the test cup with oil and place it on the HT electrodes. Close the hood properly so as to
operate the interlock micro switch which acts as a safety precaution for operator.
3. Switch ON the supply, corresponding lamp will glow.
4. Press the HT 'ON' push button the contactor will operate and corresponding lamp will glow if
the contactor doesn't operate, it means that the variac brush arm ZERO position OR the hood
interlock micro switch isn't closed.
5. Raise the voltage by turning the variac knob clockwise In case the oil sa unit will trip to lower
down the voltage turn the knob anticlockwise and ZERO position before start OR further
tests.
6. At a particular voltage shown by the voltmeter on the kit, breakdown occurs and that voltage
is noted.

RESULTS:

1) Measured gap between the electrodes = 2.5 mm

2) The given transformer oil is tested and the breakdown is occurred at______
3) Dielectric strength of the given transformer oil =____
