Sequence
➢ A sequence is an arrangement of numbers in a particular order.

Arithmetic Sequence
➢ It’s a sequence of numbers such that the difference between the consecutive terms is constant.
➢ This means that the consecutive terms can be subtracted to each other. (2, 4, 6, 8, 10,…..)
➢ Formula to get the nth term: an = a1 + (n – 1) d

➢ Steps on getting the nth term:

• Substitute the given sequence to the given formula
• Factor the equation (Make sure the use calculators if need, because some variables and
numbers have high exponents.)
• Now you’ll get the answer to the nth term you need.

➢ Arithmetic mean is the arithmetic average of the given sequence.

• To get the arithmetic average you need to divide the sum of the series of numbers to
the count of that series of numbers.
𝒏(𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒎+𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒕 𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒎)
• Sn =
𝟐

➢ But first we must first know how to determine if a sequence is arithmetic or not. So here are the
steps on how to determine if a sequence is arithmetic or not.
• To determine we must first have a sequence
• Then we need to know if our sequence have a difference when we subtract the first
term to the next term (second term)
• If it’s difference are identical every time we subtract the current term to the next term
that’s how we can determine that a sequence is arithmetic or not
• As you can see 4 -2 is have difference of 2 so as 10 – 8 this means that this sequence is
an arithmetic because they have identical difference.
➢ Here are some examples for getting the nth term in the arithmetic sequence.
➢ Example 1:
• Find the 10th term of the sequence 20, 22, 24, 26, … ( the 10th term is the nth term of the
given sequence )
• But first we need to use the formula for finding the nth term in arithmetic sequence.
• Let’s use the formula an = a1 + (n – 1) d to get the nth term of the sequence.
• a10 = 20 + (10 – 1)2
• Now let’s solve this to get the nth term of the sequence.
• a10 = 20 + 18 ( now let’s add )
• a10 = 38
• So the 10th term of this arithmetic sequence is 38.
• As you can see we used the formula to get the nth term of the sequence.

➢ Example 2:
• Find the 23rd term of the sequence 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, …
• First we need to use the formula(an = a1 + (n – 1) d) to get the arithmetic sequence
• a23 = 9 + (23 – 1)3
• Now let’s solve this to get the nth term of the sequence.
• a23 = 9 + 66 (now let’s add)
• a23 = 75
• The 23rd term of this arithmetic sequence is 75.
➢ Example 3
• Find the sum of all these 20 terms of arithmetic sequence 3, 6, 9, 2 +…, 57, 60
• To find the sum of all these 20 terms we need to use the arithmetic mean formula
𝒏(𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒎+𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒕 𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒎)
• ( Sn = )
𝟐
20(3+60)
• S20 =
2
• Let’s solve this.
20(63)
• S20 =
2
1260
• S20 =
2
• S20 = 630
• So the sum of all these 20 terms is 630
