Consumer Protection Act is welfare legislation enacted by the Government of India to empower the

consumers of various goods and services against arbitrary practices of vendors. It aims to provide rights
and benefits to consumers of good faith and provides them with appropriate machinery for redressal of
their grievances. The various provisions of the Consumer Protection Act that aims to achieve the above
objectives are analysed in this article.

Rights of consumers under the Act:

To be informed of the quality, quantity, potency, purity, standard and price of goods and services.

And be assured of access to a variety of goods or services at competitive prices.

To seek redress against unfair or restrictive trade practices.

Authorities under the Act:

The Act creates various authorities aimed solely at the protection of consumer rights.

The Act establishes Consumer Protection Councils under Section 3 at Central, State and District level
which are solely set up to advise the Central Government, State Government and District Authority for
promotion and protection of consumer rights at different levels.

A Central Consumer Protection Authority under Section 10 of the Act has been provided to be
established under the Act to regulate matters relating to violation of rights of consumers, unfair trade
practices and false or misleading advertisements which are prejudicial to the interests of the public and
consumers and to promote, protect and enforce the rights of consumers as a class.
The Act also establishes a District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission under Section 28 known as
District Commission. An aggrieved consumer may approach it to file a complaint, concerning any goods
sold or delivered or agreed to be sold or delivered or any service provided or agreed to be provided.
