NEW YORK

On a sunny day, New York’s skyscrapers shine brightly as you travel into New York from JFK Airport
Manhattan is the oldest and most famous part, and is only one of the five boroughs
The one of the five boroughs that you have been crossing ever since JFK airport is Brooklyn
23
The five boroughs are Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island
The five boroughs form a city of more than eight million people with an enormous mixture of cultures,
traditions, and human activities of every sort
Sunrise 12

Four centuries ago, Manhattan – just 13 miles long and less than two miles wide – was an island of woods,
fields, and streams that was home to native Americans

In 1625, some Dutch people arrived and founded New Amsterdam Soon after, they ‘bought’ the island from
Native Americans for just $500 of goods

The British took over the island in 1664 and renamed the village, New York.
The USA had been independent of British rule since 1776.
By 1830 New York was the main centre of trade in the USA
Before 1800, most immigration had been from Britain, but then millions started coming, first from across
Europe and then from all over the world
The immigrants moved to New York because all they wanted a better life than before.
They entered America through New York, and many of these stayed in New York
Today, half the population is either immigrants or children of immigrants
The immigrants still help to give New York its great energy
New York has experienced bad times For example, crime levels in the 1970s were very high
Empire State Building was opened in 1931, and it has remained a great tourist attraction ever since.
Empire State Building is 1,470 feet high; It remained the world’s tallest building for over 40 years
Its 102 floors have an area of approximately 2.75 million square feet
The ESB has Around 1,000 business offices, and 21,000 people work there daily
On a clear day, you can see for 80 miles from the top of the Empire State Building
When you look southwest over the banking district and on across the water, you see the Statue of Liberty.

Choose your goals carefully If you set too many, you won’t achieve any!
Students can make themselves a wall planner and write their work schedules, with homework, revision,

Grade twelve students should check their wall planner regularly and make sure they keep to those dates!
Grade 12 students can use the calendar function to help them remember important dates
Students should write a daily ‘to-do’ list’ and tick things off when they’ve done them
If you don’t manage everything, maybe your list is too long – or maybe you aren’t trying hard enough to

Students should set priorities The final revision for tomorrow’s test takes priority over phoning friends.
Grade 12 students should be strong enough to say no to time wasters They should not put things off

archaeologists.
Some of the most important developments in human history were made in this region by
early civilizations like theirs- the start of farming, and the invention of writing
Because humans have lived in the citadel for 8,000 years, the mound has many remains
Archaeologists want to investigate the mound since it is thought that the remains of many
cities lie one below another beneath it.
Important developments in ancient human history happened near Erbil Therefore it may
hold important secrets about our ancient human past
Most of the Citadel’s wonderful buildings are damaged, and many could collapse, so almost all the
26 buildings need urgent repairs.
It is also believed that the archaeological remains below have been seriously damaged by water
Action is being taken to protect this ancient site and also to give the Citadel new life
HCECR and UNESCO both agreed that the Citadel and its mound must be protected As a result, a
conservation and development plan has been prepared.

NEELAM, JOSEPH, MARIA

TV presenter As the World’s population rises, will we soon face a food crisis?
The TV programme was a weekly programme, and it was called ‘Our World Today ’
This documentary is about Land, farming, and food.
Neelam Reddy was a farmer, rural from northern India
Thirty years ago, Neelam and others in India went down 20 metres for groundwater to irrigate their crops
Now the water table is 200 metres down – ten times deeper!
After water turns salty, farming will disappear
Nature can’t go on like this, nor can people in Northern India
Neelam’s problem is Neelam has to go deeper and deeper to find water for his crops.
Joseph Nujoma was a soil scientist from Namibia, South West Africa
The rising human population means too many animals
the plant cover is all being eaten because of too many animals
Without plant cover, the earth is getting hotter and drier, and soon so will the air above
When the rain stops and this land will become desert.
Joseph’s problem was Grassland was becoming desert
Maria Rodas was housewife and mother from Guatemala
In Guatemala, It used to take 40% of their income to feed the family

Mam
People in Guatemala spend more than half to feed the family now
To save money, they are buying less meat and eating more vegetables
Corn is one basic thing they can’t live without, and that keeps going up, too

osta
If corn gets much more expensive, that’ll be a real crisis!’
Maria’s problem was food for her family is getting more and more expensive.

Fais
FOOD CRISIS

Sam Carter was a director of Only One World

a l
We need to prepare for the future because the human population will rise by nearly a third by 2050
We have only quite small amounts of land and water to produce the food we will need
The first danger is that we will reduce these limited resources further as we try to get more from them
. If the land is overused and not farmed sustainably, it will often turn into a desert
The second danger comes when we create new farmland
The ‘Oklahoma Dust Bowl’ disaster shows that it can also be dangerous to create new farmland.
Over a century ago, this enormous region’s ancient Grassland was replaced by two crops corn and cotton
Farmers might greatly have reduced this disaster if they had used less intensive techniques and not farmed
just two crops, corn, and cotton.
Then came the hot droughts of the 1930s The crops died, and the light, dry soil became dust
Without either crops or Grassland to hold the dust down, millions of tones were carried away in dust
storms that spread south and east 27
Much of the dust finally fell into the Atlantic
2.5 million people had to move away because the land became useless, and could grow nothing
Scientists can now add useful genes from one plant to another to create something new
Sunrise 12
Reading

Many people believe that GM could help produce the food we will need because genes can be added to
plants to help them resist disease
0750 465 6413 ‫فيصل ظاهر توفیق ئامادەیی ڕووناکی منوونەیی کچان‬

New plants that may produce more fruit, resist disease better, and use less water than its natural parent
However, others worry that weeds could take over from every other plant
Another solution to the food crisis may be Hydroponics, which uses liquids, not soil
With Hydroponics, we can grow our crops in liquids that contain these nutrients and lots of oxygen
The crops in liquids actually grow better and faster than plants in ordinary soil
Because of Hydroponics, crops can be grown in many places that have no soil
If Hydroponics is developed quickly and on a large scale, it could be the solution to the future food crisis
Hydroponics may be the answer to the writer’s question The question that Sam Carter asked in this
article’s heading).
