SERVICE & MAINTENANCE

MANUAL
Part Number 1503854-000
June 2023
The aerial platform is not electrically insulated. Death or serious injury will result from contact
with, or inadequate clearance from, an energized conductor.

Do not go closer than the minimum safe approach distance as defined by the Minimum Safe
Approach Distance section in Chapter 3–Safety of the machine Operator’s Manual.

Regard all conductors as energized.

Allow for electrical wire sag and aerial platform sway.

If the platform, scissors structure, or any part of the aerial platform contacts a high-voltage electrical
conductor, the entire machine can become electrically charged.

If that happens, remain on the machine and do not contact any other structure or object. This includes
the ground, adjacent buildings, poles, and any other objects that are not part of the aerial platform.

Such contact could make your body a conductor to the other object, creating an electrical shock hazard
resulting in death or serious injury.

If an aerial platform is in contact with an energized conductor the platform operator must warn ground
personnel in the vicinity to stay away. Their bodies can conduct electricity creating an electrical shock
hazard resulting in death or serious injury.

Do not approach or leave the aerial platform until the electricity has been turned off.

Do not attempt to operate the lower controls when the platform, scissors structure, or any part of the
aerial platform is in contact with a high-voltage electrical conductor or if there is an immediate danger
of such contact.

Personnel on or near an aerial platform must be continuously aware of electrical hazards, recognizing
that death or serious injury can result from contact with an energized conductor.

California

Proposition 65 Warning
Battery posts, terminals, and related accessories contain
lead and lead components, chemicals known to the
State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or
other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling.

Codes
Diagnostics on the EZLIFT controllers are primarily accessible using the EZcal hand-held device.
Menus available include DIAGNOSTICS which offers display of information relevant to the operation
of the controller. One most important diagnostic display is MODE which can be found in the
DIAGNOSTICS/SYSTEMS menu. The purpose of MODE is to indicate the current state of the EZlift
230 controller with a short description:

INITIALIZING
Preparing to operate, immediately after power-on.

SHUTDOWN!
All operation prevented – for example both the PLATFORM & GROUND EMS inputs are active
together.

CHECK CANbus
All operation prevented – CANbus communications is not successful (for example to the platform
matrix module, if applicable).

PLATFORM, GROUND
Ready to operate, from the platform or ground controls as indicated (selected by the two EMS inputs).

GROUND UP, GROUND DOWN, GROUND OUT, GROUND IN

A ground function is operating normally.

GROUND UP LOCKED, GROUND DOWN LOCKED, GROUND OUT LOCKED, GROUND IN LOCKED
A ground function is selected but not allowed (for example, the switch was closed at power-on).

GROUND FAULTY
Multiple ground function inputs are active at the same time.

WAITING FOR TRIGGER

A platform function is selected, but the trigger switch is not closed (close trigger switch to proceed).

TRIGGER CLOSED

A platform deck function is selected but not allowed (for example, the switch was closed at power-on).

CHECK DRIVE/LIFT
Neither platform drive nor platform lift select is active, or both are active at the same time.

CHECK JOYSTICK
Both platform joystick directions are active at the same time.

STEER FAULTY
Both platform steer directions are active at the same time.

INTERLOCKED
An interlock shutdown is active, preventing one or more functions. The interlock can be due to many
different causes – press <ENTER> from the EZcal MODE display to see the precise cause of the
interlock (listed below) – press <ESC> from that display to return to the MODE display:

ARMGUARD
During descent, the EZlift 230 can be configured to stop movement and provide an armguard
delay (allowing time to check that everything is clear before continuing descent). Release
and re-select DOWN to continue lowering (after the delay time has passed). If the armguard
feature is not wanted, set ADJUSTMENTS/LIFT/ ARMGUARD/@HEIGHT to 101%.

BATTERY
Battery voltage is too low (or high!) to allow movement.

EXTERNAL ALL, EXTERNAL DRIVE, EXTERNAL LIFT

An external cutout input is preventing functions – determine the cause of the external cutout.

NO VALVE SUPPLY
Check power to P3-2.

NONE
There is no interlock (the interlock has cleared while viewing the display).

OVERLOADED
The platform is overloaded, with the EZlift 230 configured to measure overload and shut
down functions when overloaded – reduce platform load.

TEST MODE
The EZlift 230 test mode is active – switch power off and on again to clear.

TILTED
The machine is tilted beyond limits, with the EZlift 230 configured to prevent some functions
when tilted (perhaps also elevated) – descend, then move machine to a more level location
(see SETUPS/TILT SETUPS/TILT SHUTDOWN and ELEV.TILT SHUTDOWN).

TOO HIGH
The platform is too high to allow some functions – descend first. (see ADJUSTMENTS/
HEIGHTS/MAX DRIVE and MAX LIFT).

TOO HOT
The EZLIFT 230 heatsink has reached 75ºc, preventing all functions except lowering.
Functions will be allowed again when the heatsink cools to below 70ºc. The heatsink
temperature can be viewed in the DIAGNOSTICS/SYSTEM/ TEMPERATURE display.
Review the installation – the heatsink must be bolted to a significant metal panel of the
machine, capable of dissipating heat to the environment.

UNCALIBRATED
The height and/or pressure sensors have not been calibrated and are required to measure
platform height and/or load. If overload functions are active ( ADJUSTMENTS/OVERLOAD
TRIP@, LAMP@ or ALARM@ set to a non-zero value) then both the height and pressure
sensors must be calibrated. If overload functions are not active, but height-based decisions
are active (ADJUSTMENTS/ HEIGHT values set to between 1% and 100%) then the height
sensors must be calibrated. Calibration procedures are accessible from the SETUPS
HEIGHT SETUPS and SETUPS/LOAD SETUPS menus.

In addition to the MODE displays detailed above, the EZlift 230 provides a HELP message display
and associated flash code LED. Various HELP messages can be displayed to indicate different
conditions; some messages also flash the LED on the controller so that even without access to an
EZcal , some simple diagnostics are possible.

IMPORTANT: It is strongly recommended not to rely on the LED flash codes, but to use an EZcal
– the HELP message and diagnostic displays provides a much higher detail of information. When
using the LED to attempt diagnosis, please note that a DUAL FLASH code is indicated. The LED
will flash on/off a certain number of times, pause off for a short delay, then flash on/off a second
certain number of times, followed by a much longer pause off. The sequence will then repeat. So for
example, the LED flash code 3/2 will look like: on/off/on/off/on/off-short-delay/on/off/on/off-long-delay/
repeat.

machine can be freely lifted/lowered and driven irrespective of any calibration needs, tilt, etc. As
soon as an EZcal is connected to the controller, the factory override state is ended, in preparation
for calibration. If calibration does not occur, then the factory override state will recur if the EZcal is
disconnected and power is switched off/on. IMPORTANT: Never use a machine in factory override;
this state is ONLY intended for use during manufacture! While factory override is active, the LED is
rapidly flashed on/off.

FUNCTIONS LOCKE D - NOT CALIBRATED........................................................................................ 1/1

If platform overload functions are active (ADJUSTMENTS/OVERLOAD TRIP@, LAMP@ or
ALARM@ set to a non-zero value) then both height and load must be calibrated If overload functions
are not active, but height-based decisions are active (ADJUSTMENTS/HEIGHT values set to
between 1% and 100%) then height must be calibrated. Calibration procedures are accessible from
the SETUPS menus.

FUNCTIONS LOCKED - OVERLOADED............................................................................................... 2/2

The platform is loaded too high to allow operation – the platform load must be reduced. If the
overload features are not wanted, be sure to set ADJUSTMENTS/ OVERLOAD TRIP@, LAMP@ or
ALARM@ to 0%.

FUNCTIONS LOCKED - TEST MODE SELECTED............................................................................... 2/2

When the EZlift 230 test mode has been activated (see DIAGNOSTICS/OUTPUTS), no function are
allowed. Switch power off/on to reset to normal operation.

FUNCTIONS LOCKED - TILTED........................................................................................................... 2/2

The machine is tilted too much to allow some functions. (see SETUPS/TILT SETUPS/TILT
SHUTDOWN and ELEV.TILT SHUTDOWN).

FUNCTIONS LOCKED - TOO HIGH...................................................................................................... 2/2

The platform is raised too high to allow some functions. (see ADJUSTMENTS/HEIGHTS/MAX DRIVE
and MAX LIFT).

FUNCTIONS LOCKED - TOO HOT!...................................................................................................... 4/2

EZlift 230 heatsink temperature exceeds 75ºc, preventing all functions except lowering. Check for
excessive motor current draw; check for good heatsinking to machine chassis.

FUNCTIONS LOCKED - UNDER LOADED........................................................................................... 2/2

Platform overload features are active, and the platform load is too low to be valid – this could be
caused by erroneous calibration, a sensor fault, or a change in the machine mechanics/hydraulics
(see SETUPS/LOAD SETUPS/ FAULTY LOAD).

HEIGHT NOT CALIBRATED.................................................................................................................. 1/1

Height based functions are required (for example MAX DRIVE is configured), but height has not been
calibrated. Calibrate height (see SETUPS/HEIGHT SETUPS) or ensure that all height settings are
either 0% or 101%.

NOT CALIBRATED................................................................................................................................. 1/1
Height and load based functions are required (for example platform overload is configured), but
height and/or load has not been calibrated Calibrate load which includes height calibration.

RELEASE GROUND SWITCHES!......................................................................................................... 2/2

Ground function switches were closed at power-on (or a wiring error is causing an input to be active
always).

RELEASE JOYSTICK!........................................................................................................................... 2/2

Platform joystick was selected at power-on (or a wiring error is causing an input to be active
always) Platform joystick selected for too long without trigger switch (see SETUPS/INTERLOCKS/
TRIGGERwait).

RELEASE TRIGGER!............................................................................................................................. 2/2

Trigger switch was closed at power-on (or a wiring error is causing the input to be active always)
Trigger switch was closed for too long with no function selected (see SETUPS/INTERLOCKS/
TRIGGERonly).

SELECT DRIVE/LIFT MODE!................................................................................................................ 2/2

There is a problem with the platform drive/lift select switch – neither mode is selected. Check wiring
from drive/lift select switch.

SHUTDOWN - CHECK EMS SWITCHES!............................................................................................. 2/1

The platform and ground EMS inputs indicate the mode in which the EZlift 230 must operate. If
neither input is active, or if both are active together, the EZlift 230 does not know how to function
Check EMS switch wiring to P3-1 and P4-1.

Fault and Flash Codes

SEM300 HELP messages

SEM300 diagnostics are primarily accessible using the PGT EZcal hand-held.

The DIAGNOSTICS/ FUNCTIONS displays are most important in diagnosing problems with input controls:

NEUTRAL/ FWD/ REV/ UP/ DOWN/ LEFT/ RIGHT indicate selected function movements.

FWD LOCKED/ UP LOCKED/ etc indicate a selected movement is blocked (selected before ENABLE
for example).

FAULTY indicates a control has a problem (out of range joystick for example) INTERLOCKED indicates
a movement is blocked due to a machine interlock/ safety limit.

When INTERLOCKED occurs, the INTERLOCKED display (in DIAGNOSTICS/ SYSTEM) is similarly
important in diagnosing the reason - the description is generally clear:

TILTED (see the TILT SHUTDOWN and ELEV TILT SHUTDOWN setups).

OVERLOAD (see platform LOAD estimate and the OVERLOAD/TRIP@ adjustment) HEIGHT (see
platform HEIGHT and the various HEIGHT setups/ MAX limits) ARMGUARD (see HEIGHT/ARMGUARD
setup, which stops lowering for a while) EXTERNAL (vehicle specific cutouts - see vehicle wiring and
design documents) TOO HOT (review controller mounting, and motor ratings).

SINGLE FUNCTIONS (occurs if multiple movements are attempted simultaneously, and not allowed).

LOW BATTERY (see BDI/LOWBATT setups; also controller will shut down before low voltage risks
damage) SEM FIELD (check motor wiring because drive motor field current is not safe - see MOTORS
diagnostics) CHARGER (vehicle specific cutout - charger is connected).

In addition to the diagnostics displays detailed above, SEM300 provides a HELP message display and
associated flash code LED. Various HELP messages can be displayed to indicate different conditions;
the following HELP messages are “information only” - the controller LED does not flash for these:

STARTUP!
STARTING: PLEASE WAIT
Initial setups and tests are occurring (startup time less than one second, generally).

EVERYTHING OK
Ready in platform mode.

GROUND MODE ACTIVE!

Ready in ground mode.

DRIVING!
LIFTING!
LOWERING!
The indicated movement is occurring - machine should be moving as requested by operator.

SEM300 CONTROL BOARD

Fault and Flash Codes
VEHICLE TILTED
Machine tilted beyond the limits set by ADJUSTMENTS/TILT/Xtrip & Ytrip; some functions may be
prevented.

The following HELP messages have an associated LED flash code - however it is recommended to
always use HELP messages for troubleshooting (via PGT EZcal or Display Module):

CHECK DRIVE CONTROLS! 2/2

CHECK LIFT CONTROLS! 2/2
CHECK STEER CONTROLS! 2/2
A movement function was selected before enable (or is stuck/ selected at power on) A fault with the
control (switch/joystick) can also cause this. NOTE: The relevant controls depend if the controller is
in platform or ground mode.

FACTORY OVERRIDE (fast flashing)

It is essential the controller is calibrated when machine is built (see description at beginning of
document).
IMPORTANT: Never use a machine in factory override; it’s ONLY intended for use during
manufacture! While factory override is active, the LED is rapidly flashed on/off.

FAULT: BAD CONFIGURATION 1/1

Check VEHICLE and MODEL setups (in CHANGE DEFAULTS menu)

FAULT: BAD INTERNAL 5V! 7/1

FAULT:BADINTERNAL12V! 7/5
FAULT: INTERNAL PROBLEM! 7/3
FAULT: INTERNAL SAFETY SWITCH! 7/2
FAULT: INTERNAL STORAGE PROBLEM! 7/6
The controller has detected an internal fault. Remove power and check all wiring; if the fault remains,
the controller may have to be replaced.

FAULT: BATTERY VOLTAGE TOO LOW! 4/4

FAULT: BATTERY VOLTAGE TOO HIGH! 4/4
The battery supply is out of range

FAULT: CHECK ELEVATION SWITCH 6/3

Only relevant if an elevation switch is installed on the vehicle. During calibration, the height at which
elevation switch opens (while lifting) and closes (while lowering), is recorded - a significant difference
is now detected. Check for open- or short-circuit wiring; check for faulty elevation switch; re-calibrate
height if necessary.

FAULT: CHECK HEIGHT1 SENSOR 6/1

FAULT: CHECK HEIGHT2 SENSOR 6/1
A height sensor is giving an out-of-range voltage (below 0.5V or above 4.5V) Check for open- or
short-circuit wiring; replace height sensor if necessary.

Continued on next page...

Slab Scissors – 1503854-000 June 2023 107

Section 9 S4740E Electric Drive

SEM300 CONTROL BOARD

Fault and Flash Codes

FAULT: CHECK HEIGHT SENSORS 6/1

When two height sensors are fitted, both should read the same height at all times Check for loose
sensors; re-calibrate height if necessary

FAULT:CHECKPRESSURESENSOR 6/2
The pressure sensor is giving an out-of-range voltage (below 0.5V or above 4.5V). Check for open-
or short- circuit wiring; replace pressure sensor and re-calibrate load if necessary.

FAULT: ENERGIZED VALVE - CHECK WIRING! 3/1

There is a voltage on one or more valve outputs, when all outputs should be off Check wiring to each
valve coil.

FAULT: LINE CONTACTOR WELDED! 3/2

Check the line contactor tips are not welded; check the power wiring for errors.

FAULT: LINE CONTACTOR OPEN! 3/3

Check the power wiring for errors.

FAULT: MOTOR OVERLOAD! 7/7

Controller motor power protection circuits have activated to protect from extreme overload Check for
short-circuit power wiring; check for a seized motor.

HEIGHT NOT CALIBRATED 1/1

Height must be calibrated in order to use overload, MAX LIFT, MAX DRIVE, etc See CALIBRATE
HEIGHT in SETUPS/HEIGHT SETUPS.

NOT CALIBRATED 1/1

Height and pressure/load must both be calibrated in order to use overload. See CALIBRATE LOAD
in SETUPS/LOAD SETUPS.

RELEASE ENABLE! 2/2

The enable/trigger switch is closed at power-on (or a wiring error is causing the input to be active
always). The enable/trigger switch is closed for too long with no function selected (see TRIGGER
only setup in SETUPS/INTERLOCKS).

SHUTDOWN! 1/1
Check all wiring, including the platform and ground EMS inputs

WAITING FOR CANBUS! 1/1

The vehicle / controller design uses CANbus connected modules (like the PGT CAN joystick
interface, CAN display module, etc); however data is not being received from required devices Check
CANbus wiring; ensure that CANbus wires are correctly pin-to-pin (1-1, 2-2); check power to CANbus
connected modules. Check that the machine chassis is not erroneously shorted to the motor wiring
(for example, due to insulator breakdown in the motor).

SETTING PRESSURES

Steer Pressure
1. Remove cap and install a 0-5000 psi pressure gauge to G Test Port (item 1 page101).

2. Steer one direction until stop both directions pressure should be 1100-1150 psi (75-79 bar).

3. Remove cap (item 4 page 101), for adjustment.

4. Turn relief clockwise to increase pressure and counterclockwise to decrease pressure.

5. Remove pressure gauge and replace cap.

Lift Pressure
1. Install a 0-5000 psi gauge to G Test Port (item 1 page 101).

2. Load capacity in platform.

3. When adjusting lift pressure relief (item 3 page 101, on manifold) platform should just
be able to lift capacity (add 50 lbs to make sure machine will not lift past capacity).

4. Remove pressure gauge.

Hydraulic Pump Pressure

Note: Hydraulic pump pressure is preset by pump manufacturer, to check the pump
pressure follow steps below.

1. Remove pressure hose from pump and install a hose long enough to go into a clean
five gallon container.

2. Install a tee and ball valve at the end of hose going into the bucket.

3. Install a fitting for 500 psi pressure gauge. Make sure ball valve is not
closed completely.

4. Steer machine, pump will come on, slowly close ball valve until pressure equalizes.
Do not close ball valve completely as pump damage will occur. Pressure
should be 3300 psi (227 bar).

5. To adjust pump pressure turn relief (item 2 page 32). Clockwise increases pressure
and counterclockwise decreases pressure. Do not close ball valve
completely.

6. Remove ball valve and hose, reinstall pressure hose, refill hydraulic oil and check for
leaks.
