Study the following information carefully and answer the questions given below:

Twelve people are sitting in two parallel rows containing six people each, in such a way that there is an equal

distance between adjacent persons. In row – 1 A, B, C, D, E and F are seated and all of them are facing south. In row-

2 S, T, U, V, W and X are seated and all of them are facing north.

Therefore in the given sitting arrangement, each member seated in a row faces another member of the other row.

No two people with names starting with consecutive alphabet is an immediate neighbour of each other. For

example, A is not an immediate neighbour of B. B is not an immediate neighbour of either A or C and so on. Each of

them also likes a different watches viz. Titan, Casio, Sonata, Fastrack, Quartz, Fossil, Omega, Cartier, Piaget,

Bremont, Apple and Maxima.

(Please Note : None of the information given is necessarily in the same order.)

B sits at an extreme end of the line. Only two people sit between B and the one who likes Omega. T sits second to

the left of the one who faces the one who likes Omega. The one who likes Sonata sits second to the right of U. B

does not face the one who likes Sonata. Only two persons sit between V and X. C does not sit at an extreme end of

the line. F is not an immediate neighbour of B. D faces the one who likes Piaget. Only three people sit between the

ones who like Piaget and Titan. X likes Fossil. Only one person sits between X and S. One of the immediate

neighbours of S faces the one who likes Apple. The one who likes Casio sits to the immediate left of A. V sits

second to the right of the one who likes Bremont. Only one person sits between the ones who like Cartier and

Maxima respectively. B does not like Maxima. T does not like Fastrack.

Question No. 46

Among the best uses of a census anywhere in the world was perhaps what happened in the United States when, in

1850 and 1860, anti-slavery campaigners used numbers from two consecutive national censuses to build support for

the abolition of slavery. They showed the number of enslaved people in the U.S. to be rising — contrary to

arguments made by pro-slavery politicians. There have been numerous instances of such revelations using the

census.

Options :

1. Censuses played a key role in the abolition of slavery in the U.S. because, with the help of censuses, anti-

slavery campaigners were able to bring out the perils faced by slaves, thus making international

organisations notice them.

2. During the 1850s and 1860s, there has been a mass movement in the U.S. against slavery, and censuses

contributed greatly to this, by validating the grounds of the pro-slavery politicians, that slavery has been

rising in the U.S.

3. During the mid-1800s, people who were against slavery proved wrong the claims of the pro-slavery

politicians that slavery was declining in the U.S., and used two national censuses to gain support for slavery

abolition, thus bringing out the best use of censuses.

Question No. 47

The growing concern over climate change has led to global efforts to electrify the transportation sector. In parallel,

cost of Li-ion (Lithium-ion) battery technology has decreased by a staggering order of magnitude in the past

decade. The convergence of these two factors has resulted in a unique time in our history where we are at the cusp

of a dramatic transition in the transportation sector, with electric vehicles poised to replace petrol vehicles.

Options :

1. Two major factors have led to the transition of the transportation sector, from petrol vehicles to electric

vehicles; concerns about climate change and the affordable cost of Li-ion battery technology.

2. Although there are global efforts to switch from petrol vehicles to electric vehicles, the cost of Li-ion

battery still poses a challenge, and people around the globe are finding a possible way to make cost-

effective batteries, thus paving way for a less-damaging future.

3. Vehicles have been a severe threat to climate change, and the idea that the transition to electric vehicles

might be a solution to the problem is paving way for global efforts to invent advanced technologies that

would decrease the cost of Li-ion batteries.

4. The concerns over climate change and the cost of Li-ion battery technology are the two factors that

prevent us from transitioning to electric vehicles, and history proves that electric vehicles are causing

indirect damage to the environment.

Question No. 48

India, after half a century of keeping its higher education doors closed to foreigners, is on the cusp of opening itself

to the world. The traditional orientation to swadeshi that has characterised much of Indian thinking, at least in

higher education, is changing. The wide-ranging National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 promises higher education

reforms in many areas, and internationalisation is prominent among them. Among the underlying ideas is to

strengthen India’s “soft power” through higher education collaboration, bringing new ideas and institutions from

abroad to stimulate reform and show “best practice”, and in general to ensure that Indian higher education, for the

first time, is a global player.

Options :

1. The introduction of NEP has brought the Indian education to global standards, and many educational

institutions from abroad have already got sanction to open up their branch in India.

2. The perspective of higher education is changing in India, with the reforms in NEP that amends the

traditional Indian practice of not allowing foreigners in higher education to opening its doors for

international educational institutions, thus making it a global player.

3. Indian education system will be going on a complete transformation with NEP, that will privatise all the

education institutions in India, and will also allow foreign education institutions to operate freely in India,

thus making Indian students ready to take up any global challenge.

4. The NEP has promised many reforms, the most prominent one being internationalisation of higher

education, whereby more foreign students will have a chance to attend Indian Universities at an affordable

cost and the number of exchange programs will be increased.

The virus has spread everywhere like a wild forest fire due to which numerous changes were accepted by people all

over the world, and it took some time for everyone to adapt to the new normal. Online learning is rapidly becoming

one of the most effective ways to impart education. Online classes and technology have emerged as a superhero

during the lockdown days. For students, online classes have become an imminent trend in the education sector

around the globe. Digital learning has provided easy access to the files and folders that can now be organised and

saved without any physical damage. With advanced technology, this mode of learning has not only been simpler

but fun and engaging as well. Technology-enabled learning is beneficial and has proven to be more engaging as it

helps in making those subjects interactive and fun which are traditionally considered dull by students. It became

very convenient for the students to attend classes from anywhere in the world as both classes and learning content

was easily accessible at home. Integration of the learning platforms with new-age interactive applications has made

the same time using certain online applications. Students have been more particular with their online submission as

they are notified on a regular basis and it is an effortless task for the teachers to track down the students who have

failed to submit their assignments on time. Online learning has helped students to become independent learners

before they make their way into the real world. Students got opportunities to explore new learning applications

and platforms during the class, which helped them to develop new skills and capabilities accelerating their growth

trajectory. Some of the students have been responding well to the active learning environment created online by

the teachers whereas others need a push in fits and starts.

Most of the private and public schools have made a smooth transition to online platforms such as Zoom, Google

classrooms, Microsoft teams, etc. while many still find it a herculean task. The challenges of online learning are

multifaceted. Online learning has played a crucial role during the pandemic, but its consequences cannot be

ignored. Online classes cannot be accessed by every student due to the unavailability of smartphones, laptops, and

network. Unfortunately, the less privileged part of our society has been more on the receiving end of this. This may

increase the class and demography-based disparity with respect to access to quality education.

One of the biggest challenges of online learning that many students face is the struggle to focus for long durations

on screen. Not to mention, there is a plethora of distracting content available online which attracts and distracts

the students more often than not. To avoid this and help the students stay focused on the class, the teachers have

made strenuous efforts and designed their online classes to be crisp, engaging, and interactive. Online classes are

not completely reliable as internet connectivity plays a vital role. While access to the internet has drastically

improved over the past few years, in some parts of the country, people still lack access to decent internet speed

and connectivity. Inconsistent internet connectivity has emerged as one of the top excuses for the students to

dodge some important requirements such as an active visual presence which is imperative for due vigilance. With

the cameras turned off there is a disconnection between the teachers and students. It is observed widely that

students would log into the class and then get distracted with other activities. Given that students are free from

the regulations and boundaries of an appropriate classroom environment, it is perceived that the curriculum is not

given importance by the students. Traditional classroom education offers the benefit of face-to-face interactions

with peers which are typically moderated by a teacher. Physical classroom interaction provides children, especially

those in their early developmental years, with a stable environment for social interactions, helping them develop

skills like empathy and cooperation. It helps them in their overall development and real-life situations.

the same time using certain online applications.

It became

The rupee is yet again facing renewed pressure, along with major peers, as the dollar continues to strengthen in the

wake of the Federal Reserve’s latest jumbo 75 basis points interest rate increase and the U.S. central bank’s

unequivocal message that it remains squarely focused on taming inflation. The Indian currency weakened past the

81-mark against the dollar for the first time ever in Friday’s intraday trade, before ending the week at a new record

closing low. The rupee’s slide was softened by the Reserve Bank of India’s intervention to smoothen volatility; the

cumulative impact of such interventions over the 12 months through September 16 have shrunk the RBI’s war chest

of foreign exchange reserves by almost $94 billion to $545.65 billion. The fact that the rupee is not alone in

depreciating against the dollar can be of little comfort to Indian companies reliant on imports of raw materials or

services for the smooth functioning of their businesses.
