h
horizontal. For what value of the ball will take maximum time to reach the
H
ground. (04marks)
(b).(i).The horizontal component of velocity is retained in projectile motion. Briefly
explain. (02marks)
(ii). A particle moving in a semi- circular path AB of radius 6m as shown in the
figure below with constant speed 12m/s. calculate the average velocity.
12m/s

3. (a).(i). A particle of mass 100 g is tied to one end of a string of length 1m and moved
round in a horizontal circle, the other end of the string being stationary. Find
the tension in the string when the particle is making 2 revolutions per second
(02marks)

(ii). A rocket is launched vertically from the surface of the earth with an initial
velocity u. Find the height up to which the rocket can go from the surface of
earth before falling back to earth (04marks)
(b). An artificial satellite is moving in a circular orbit around the earth with speed
equal to half the magnitude off escape velocity from the earth. If the satellite is
stopped suddenly in its orbit and allowed to fall freely on the earth, find the
speed with which it hits the surface of the earth. (04marks)
(ii). The radius of a planet is four times that of the earth and its mean density is
double that of the earth. What is the time period of a simple pendulum on this
planet, if it is a second’s pendulum on the earth? (04marks)
(b). If the radius of the earth, assumed to be a perfect sphere, suddenly shrinks to half
its present value, the mass of the earth remaining unchanged, what will be the
duration of one day. (04marks)

6. (a).(i). Total surface area of a box to keep the water cold is 1.6 m2 and wall thickness is
2.0 cm. It is filled with ice and water at 0°C. What is the rate of heat flow into
the box if the outside temperature is 30°C? Also calculate mass of ice that
melts in one day. (03marks)
