CALCULATION NOTE: JACKET DENTING CALCULATION Calculated LT

This calculation sheet calculates the Dent formation in the impact members. The Denting energy is checked with the
plastic hinge formation energy to determine the lower bound mechanism which would be the governing mode to failure.

The impact force is calculated based on the dent depth and a solution for the impact problem is obtained through
iteration by equiting the force causing the dent and the force causing platform displacement. The total energy
absorbed using these 2 components would be equal to the vessel collision energy.

Design Criteria Leg A1 - 0 deg. Impact

Vessel Dry Weight mves = 2500 MT

Added mass factor
Broadside impact abr = 1.4
Bow/Stern impact abow = 1.1
Impact Velocity vves = 0.5 m/s
Kinetic energy
Broadside impact = 437.5 kJ

Bow/Stern impact = 343.75 kJ

Energy Absorption

The Energy Absorption is considered conservatively to be due to

1) Platform displacement
2) Member Denting
3) Hinge formations

1) Platform displacement is obtained from SACS by applying unit loads to the structure

platform stiffness kplat = 12000 kN = 1.250E+05 kN

0.096 m m

This is true for jacket still within elastic limits and without damaged members. The actual impact force has to be
checked with the jacket structure to confirm that this is the case.

Member Diameter Thickness Yield strength
Jacket Leg Dleg = 2210 mm tleg = 50 mm Fy_leg = 335 MPa
Pile Dpile = 2032 mm tpile = 80 mm Fy_pile = 324 MPa

Radius Rleg = Dleg = 1105 mm Rpile = Dpile = 1016 mm

The relationship between force and dent depth is given by O. Furnes as follows (API C18.9.2c)

Pd =

Combining these equations,

Substituting Mp into the equation

Jacket Leg :

Pile :

Considering the grout not to absorbed any eneegy but it can transfer the force to the inner pile. The total energy due
to denting would be arising from pile and the leg combined. Due to the grout, the dent depth has to be compatible on
the leg as well as the pile. The force on the inner and external tube would not be equal as it wuld depend on the
relative stiffness.

Hence the following equations has to be satisfied :

Conservation of energy : Ed_leg + Ed_pile + Eplat = Ekbr

Force compatibility : kplat.dp = Pd_leg + Pd_pile

Displacement compability Xleg = Xpile

Hence, expanding the terms :

Solution to the above equations :

Platform displacement dp = 70.103 mm

m

D - Diameter of tube
t - thickness of tube
X - Dent depth

Energy Absorbed in the Dent formation is given by

Dent Depth X = 19.413 mm

Platform displacement dp = 80.989 mm

31
32 Considering the grout not to absorbed any eneegy but it can transfer the force to the inner pile. The total energy due

36
37 Hence the following equations has to be satisfied :
38
39 Conservation of energy : Ed_leg + Ed_pile + Eplat = Ekbr

2 This calculation sheet calculates the Dent formation in the impact members. The Denting energy is checked with the
3 plastic hinge formation energy to determine the lower bound mechanism which would be the governing mode to failure.
4
5 The impact force is calculated based on the dent depth and a solution for the impact problem is obtained through
6 iteration by equiting the force causing the dent and the force causing platform displacement. The total energy
7 absorbed using these 2 components would be equal to the vessel collision energy.

13 Broadside impact abr = 1.4
14 Bow/Stern impact abow = 1.1
15 Impact Velocity vves = 0.5 m/s

21 Energy Absorption
22
23 The Energy Absorption is considered conservatively to be due to
24
25 1) Platform displacement
26 2) Member Denting
27 3) Hinge formations
28

33

35 checked with the jacket structure to confirm that this is the case.
