Possible Structure

Title
This must encapsulate your entire research study.

Executive Summary
Concise summary of your report, including aim, analysis, key conclusions, and
recommendations (comes first).

Contents Page
Include correct headings and page numbers.

Introduction (Chapter 1)
Introduction to the report setting out what the aims and objectives of the report are, the
context, ‘’what the report will cover, and why’’ and your method of analysis and key
findings. Must be supported by the ideas of influential contributors (in text citations).

Literature Review (Chapter 2)

A thorough and comprehensive critique of the subject area. A rigorous review and critic
of the literature based on a wide range of sources. The review should highlight the
theoretical issues associated with the topic in order to provide a conceptual framework
for the primary research.

Methodology – Research Design, Methods and Analysis (Chapter 3)

The methodology should provide clear linkages between the method and the research
goals. The methodology should start by describing your research question(s) and the type
of data (quantitative or qualitative) you used in answering it. The method should be clearly
explained and justified. You want to show why your chosen method is suitable, relevant,
and significant to the research question being asked.

Has the data collection process been clearly described? Justify the choice of your
research methodology. Discuss your rational for choosing either qualitative or quantitative
research or using a mixed method (triangulated) approach. Include a discussion on your
chosen research paradigm. Consider any ethical issues and clearly explain your sources
of information.

Has the method of data analysis been explained? After describing data collection, you
will need to highlight on the data analysis that you’ve undertaken. You need to state and
justify the method of analysis as appropriate to the aim and objectives of your research
project.
You need to analyse in-depth the evidence (data) and finally present the findings clearly
in Chapter 4.

Results (Data Presentation) (Chapter 4)

In the discussion, you will need to interpret your findings with reference to theories
introduced in the literature review. Apply the theory to the data, critically analyse and
evaluate in-depth the effectiveness of theory in applied in practice. What is the unique
insight from your research?

Work-based impact report (Chapter 5)

This chapter should also be incorporated into your research-based consultancy project.
The work-based impact report includes a reflection on the implementation of the research
project process as a whole and your individual effectiveness, for example, as a
researcher, leader, problem solver and practitioner.

Conclusions and Recommendations (Chapter 6)

This section should initially answer the report aim and objectives and draw together the
main points from your analysis. It summarises what has been learned from undertaking
this project concerning the application of theory into practice. What are the main
conclusions from your project? No new information should be presented in the
conclusions.

Make recommendations for improvement based upon your conclusions, clearly stating
how they can add value. Recommendations should be fully feasible and justified
considering costs, priority level, timescale, resources, who is responsible, benefits and
any further implications.
