Section 1: Functions, graphs and transformations

Exercise level 2
1. The function d is defined as: d(n) = the number of factors of n, where n .
e.g. d(25) = 3 since 25 has 3 factors: 1, 5 and 25.
(a) Find
(i) d(6) (ii) d(5) (iii) d(16) (iv) d(13).
(b) Describe the set of numbers for which d(n) = 2.
(c) Describe the set of numbers for which d(n) is an odd number.

2. The function f is defined as:

1
f :x .
x −1
(a) What value of x must be excluded from the domain of this function?
(b) Find
(i) f(2) (ii) f(−3) (iii) f(0)
(c) For what value of x is f(x) = 2?

3. The diagram below shows the curve y = f ( x) , where 0  x  7 .

The curve passes through the point A (0, 5), B (, 0) and C (2, 0) and has a turning
point at D (4.5, -2).

images of A, B and C in each case. Write down the new domain and range in each
case.
(a) y = f ( x − 2) + 0.5

(b) y = f ( 12 x + 3)

4. The curve y = x − 2 x undergoes the following transformations.

and a reflection in the y-axis.
(a) Find the equation of the new curve in the form y = ax + bx + c
2

(b) Write down the equation of the line of symmetry of the final curve.
(c) Write down the coordinates of the turning point of the new curve.

5. Explain how you could use transformations to obtain each of the following curves from
the curve y = sin x .

(a) y = 1 + sin( x + 30)

(b) y = −3sin 12 x

6. (a) Write y = 5 x − 15 x + 4 in completed square form.

2

(b) Write down the sequence of transformations that should be applied to

y = 5 x 2 − 15 x + 4 to map it onto y = x 2 .
(c) Show algebraically that the sequence of transformations will map y = 5 x − 15 x + 4
