SURVEY OBJECTIVES
The press felt conditioning system is analyzed for best practice design and
application for the impact on press dewatering as per TAPPI recommendations.
The vacuum system is evaluated for best practice process configuration,
equipment application, and effectiveness relative to current machine operation.
The key objective is to verify the water handling capabilities of the press section
and to identify opportunities to increase sheet solids out of the press section.
We look at uhle box open area and dwell time, positioning, and suction roll open
area, piping, pipe size and separators. Existing vacuum system installed
capacity is compared to TAPPI recommended service demand as well as other
comparable machines with similar production rates and machine layout.
Additionally, vacuum pumps are orifice tested for actual capacity and compared
to TAPPI recommended service demand. Separators and piping are evaluated as
to correct sizing and inlet velocity for process water separation.

SUMMARY
The vacuum system overall is in good condition with the exception for pump #2 because of its low
efficiency. I do not recommend replacing this pump at this time but to have it inspected either at your
shop or at CVN Vooner in Greeneville TN. Also investigate possible discharge separator issues which
might cause the increased back pressure on the discharge side.
To improve overall machine efficiency and run ability I suggest you replace or install new uhle box
strip to provide a 10 mm (0.4”) slot opening on all uhle and felt boxes. The dwell time (the time a felt
travels over the slot and is exposed to vacuum) is still at 5.5 milli seconds even at the fastest machine
speed and the 10 mm slot is still wide enough to avoid “bridging”.
Following charts, graph, analyses and drawing compares existing with recommended equipment.
I would like to include cost comparisons and savings but that would require information you might
consider confidential. Information like steam consumption, drying rate, exact sheet consistencies in
and out of the press section. Total down time caused by sheet breaks, felt cleaning and others.
Please look at this report as if you would go to your doctor for a checkup. We checked the “health” of
your machine, found symptoms, problems and provided a “prescription” to get healthy again. It is
certainly up to you and your priorities if, when and how you start “treatment”.
Whatever you decide, I and everybody at CVN Vooner are here to help and assist in any way we can.

Vacuum System
The pump layout, piping and separator system are sized properly for the application. This survey finds
that the most urgent changes needed are filtering/cleaning the seal water for the liquid ring vacuum
pumps.
1. Specific airflow to all dewatering sources (sheet boxes and uhle boxes) is correct assuming 100
% efficiency for the vacuum pumps. However, no pumps perform at that level.
2. Current overall seal water flow to all vacuum pumps is adequate.
3. Separators, uhle boxes and vacuum piping are adequate for current production conditions.
4. Pump #1 (VG20XVS-M) runs at 496 RPM, operating at 92% at current production conditions.

5. Pump #2 (VG4-L) runs at 1163 RPM, operating at 70% at current production conditions.
6. Pump #3 (VG20XVS-M) runs at 513 RPM, operating at 94% at current production conditions.
7. There are no spray nozzles installed on any vacuum pump.
8. On two (2) former rolls are “crank” type high pressure shower actuators installed. (This is 1940
technology)
Note:
All vacuum levels listed are adjusted to the barometric pressure for Atizapan during the
vacuum pump survey.
Recommended specific air flow for uhle boxes: 18 acfm/square inch open area
Recommended vacuum level on uhle boxes: 12 - 18” HgV
Recommended specific air flow for sheet boxes: 3 acfm/square inch open area
Recommended vacuum level for sheet boxes: 8 - 15” HgV
To item 1)
If all pumps would operate at 100%, the vacuum pump capacities are correct for current production
parameters. Unfortunately, wear and buildup inside the vacuum pumps reduces the pumps efficiencies.
Currently, all uhle boxes and sheet box #2 and #3 have single slotted covers with about .375 slot
opening. Sheet box #1 has a 0.5” slot opening.
At the current maximum machine speed and a slot opening of .5”, the dwell time (felt being exposed
to vacuum going over the uhle box slot) is around 10 milli seconds. This is above the recommended 4
milli seconds. I suggest closing the slot opening to 10 mm. Closing the slot even more would increases
the chance of bridging and is not recommended.
To item 2)
Recommended seal water flow for pump #1: 25 gal/min…current flow: 21 gal/min
Recommended seal water flow for pump #2: 5 gal/min…current flow: 5 gal/min
Recommended seal water flow for pump #3: 25 gal/min…current flow: 27 gal/min

Pump #1 and #3 does have a flow control system installed but needs to be adjusted to 25 gal/min.
Pump #2 does not have a flow control system but we timed the seal water flow and measured the
correct 5 gal/min as recommended.
To item 3)
Air velocities inside uhle boxes, separators and piping to and from the separators are well below the
maximum air velocity of: 3500 feet/min wet air (before separator)
750 feet/min inside separator
5500 feet/min dry air (after separator)
To item 4)
Pump #1 (VG20XVS-M) was put into operation in 2007
This pump has stainless steel internal parts but with the seal water conditions as they are, a 1%
efficiency drop per year can be expected. Adjusting the seal water flow to 25 gal/min should improve
the pump performance slightly.
To item 5)
Pump #2 (VG4-L) was put into operation in 2007
This pump is actually a VG4SS6-L (all parts in 304) but was somehow labeled incorrectly. I do not
know why this pump tested at 70% efficiency. Because of the small inlet flanges, testing both sides of
the pump is impossible. That’s why we had to do a single plate test, leaving the inlet manifold in place
and testing the total airflow only.
There are several reasons for the low efficiency;
1,) non centered rotor
2.) something got in the pump at one time and damaged some internals and
3.) too much back pressure on the discharge side.
My favorite is number three.
The drainage pipe from the discharge separator goes up vertical to the same height as the inlet pipe to
the separator before joining the drainage line from the #3 pump discharge separator.

To item 6)
Pump #3 (VG20XVS-M) was originally put into operation around 1997 at the Sonoco Santa Clara
mill. CVN Vooner refurbished the pump at the Greeneville plant in late 2012.
During the testing, the efficiency was 92%, in line with refurbished pumps. (Refurbished pumps are
shipped with a 90% – 95% efficiency rating. Adjusting the seal water flow to 25 gal/min should
improve the pump performance slightly.
To item 7)
Installing seal water spray nozzles in the inlet lines of the vacuum pumps can increase the pump
capacity up to 10% depending of vacuum level and seal water/vapor temperature.
The colder seal water condensates some of the ingoing water vapors, increasing the vacuum pumps
capacity.
To item 8)
I suggest you replace the old style high pressure “crank style” shower actuators with new adjustable
stroke speed actuators. This guarantees complete coverage cleaning for the forming roll wire mesh.
The correct stroke speed (one nozzle width per forming roll revolution) for 60” diameter rolls at the
slowest machine speed of 30 m/min is: 0,38 inch/min using 0.04” nozzles. On three (3) nozzle
spacing, the forming roll is completely cleaned every eight (8) minutes.

Other issues.
I mentioned earlier that the poor seal water quality is the major reason for premature pump wear.
If you could provide a water analyses, I can size the correct gravity strainer for your application.
