INTENSIVO ADVANCED
First class
Warm-up: Introductions. I introduce myself and ask them to interview one another (name, age, what they do, why
they’re learning English). After a few minutes, they introduce one another. If odd number, I join in.
Icebreaker: Play two truths, one lie. Demonstrate first. Then, students’ turn.
Give SS basic information about the course: hours, coursebook, level, expectations.
Pre: Play taboo with famous women. Divide the class in two or three teams, ask them if they know how to play and
demonstrate with one or two students. Once they finish playing, ask them what all the characters have in common.
List: Marie Curie, Frida Kahlo, Eva Peron, Madonna, Mercedes Sosa, Amelia Earhart, Ana Frank, Malala Yousafzai, Taylor
Swift, Maria Elena Walsh, Luciana Aymar, Princess Diana, Barbie, Queen Elizabeth II.
Talk about a few of them. Lead them to today’s topic: Women’s Day (write on the board)
On this day, we celebrate the achievements of women and aim to create positive change for women and girls. We
demand gender equality and fight for women’s rights. International Women's Day started with a protest that took place
in New York City in 1908. Fifteen thousand women went out onto the streets to demand equal rights and better working
conditions. In particular, they wanted shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote.
At the International Conference of Working Women in Denmark in 1910, a woman called Clara Zetkin proposed the idea
of an international day for women.
“We shouldn’t celebrate Women’s Day because of so many women who have been victims of violence, discrimination
and harassment”
Interactive activity
Setting expectations: Ask them to write what it is they hope to learn this year and gather the papers in a bag.
Discuss with a partner about women who are inspirational in your life.
