1. Answer any three of the following questions in about 350 words each :

(a) Consider T. S. Eliot’s ‘‘Tradition and the Individual Talent’’ as a


manifesto of modernist poetry.

Or,

(b) How does Virginia Woolf define and characterise modern fiction in
opposition to the fictions of her predecessors? Discuss with reference
to “Modern Fiction.”

(c) What, according to I. A. Richards, are the chief uses of the word “truth”
in criticism? Discuss with reference to “The Two uses of Language.”

Or,

(d) Discuss after F. R. Leavis the distinction between criticism and
philosophy as two separate yet connected disciplines. Answer with
reference to “Literary Criticism and Philosophy.”

(e) Critically assess Antonio Gramsci’s notion of the intellectuals as reflected


in his “The Formation of the Intellectuals”.

Or,

(f) Do you subscribe to Walter Benjamin’s view that mechanical


reproduction destroys the uniqueness and authenticity of the work of
art? Substantiate your answer with reference to his essay “The Work
of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction”.

(g) What, according to Elaine Showalter, is an androcentric critical tradition?


What shift does she observe in that tradition and how? Answer with
reference to the essay “Feminist Criticism in the Wilderness”.
