English: Austerity, study of sacred literature and surrendering fruits of work to God are called
Kriya-Yoga (Yoga in the form of action).
English: Ignorance, egoism, attachment, aversion and clinging to life - are the five Klesas.
English: As long as klesa remains at the root, the fruition comes in the form of birth, life and
experience of pleasure and pain.
English: The karmas bear fruits of pleasure or pain, caused by virtue or vice
प रणामतापसंस्कारदुःखैगण
ुर्ग वृ त्ति वरोधाच्च दुःखमेव सवर्थं ववे कनः (2.15)
पदच्छे द: प रणाम , ताप , संस्कार , दुःखै , गुण , वृ त्ति , वरोधात ् , च , दुःखम ् , एव , सवर्गम ् , ववे कनः ॥
सूत्राथर्ग / Sutra Meaning
Hindi: प रणाम दु:ख, ताप दु:ख और संस्कार दु:ख, इन तीन प्रकार के दु:खों के कारण और तीनों गुणों की वृ त्तियों में परस्पर
वरोधी स्वभाव के कारण ववेकी के लए सब-के-सब कमर्गफल दु:खरूप ही हैं ।
English: The discriminating persons apprehend (by analysis and anticipation) all is, as it were,
sorrowful on account of everything bringing pain, either in the consequences, or in apprehension,
or in attitudes caused by impressions, also on account of the contrary nature of the three gunas.
हे यं दुःखमनागतम ् (2.16)
पदच्छे द: हे यम ् , दुःखम ् , अनागतम ् ॥
सूत्राथर्ग / Sutra Meaning
Hindi: जो आया नहीं है आनेवाला है वह दु:ख त्यागने योग्य है ।
English: The cause of that which is to be avoided is the union of the Seer(subject) and the
seen(object).
English: The states of the Gunas(qualities) are - diversified, undiversified, indicated only and
signless.
English: The Seer is absolute knower. Although pure, seen through the colouring of the intellect
तदथर्ग एव दृश्यस्यात्मा (2.21)
पदच्छे द: तत ् , अथर्ग , एव , दृश्यस्य , आत्मा ॥
सूत्राथर्ग / Sutra Meaning
Hindi: उक्त दृश्य का स्वरूप उस द्र टा के लए ही है ।
English: The nature of the experience exists only to serve the purpose of the Atma.
English: Though destroyed for him whose goal has been gained, yet it still exists for others, being
common to them
स्वस्वा मशक्त्योः स्वरूपोपलि धहे तुः संयोगः (2.23)
पदच्छे द:स्व , स्वा म , शक्त्योः , स्वरूप , उपलि ध , हे तुः , संयोगः ॥
सूत्राथर्ग / Sutra Meaning
Hindi: दृश्य (प्रकृ त) और स्वामी (द्र टा पुरुष) इन दोनों शिक्तयों के स्वरूप की प्रािप्त का कारण संयोग है ।
English: The union of Purusha and Prakrti causes the realisation of the nature of both the powers.
English: : There being absence of that (ignorance) there is absence of union, which is the thing to
be avoided, that is the state of liberation of the Seer.
English: Clear and distinct discriminative knowledge is the means of destruction of ignorance.
तस्य सप्तधा प्रान्तभू मः प्रज्ञा (2.27)
पदच्छे द: तस्य , सप्तधा , प्रान्तभू मः , प्रज्ञा ॥
सूत्राथर्ग / Sutra Meaning
Hindi: सात प्रकार की अिन्तम िस्थ त वाली बुद् ध होती है ।
English: His (the yogi who has acquired discriminative enlightenment) knowledge is of the sevenfold
highest ground.
English: By the practice of the limbs of Yoga the impurities being destroyed knowledge becomes
effulgent, up to discrimination.
यम नयमासनप्राणायामप्रत्याहारधारणाध्यानसमाधयोऽ टावङ्गा न (2.29)
पदच्छे द: यम , नयम , आसन , प्राणायाम , प्रत्याहार , धारणा , ध्यान , समाधय: , अ टौ , अङ्गा न॥
सूत्राथर्ग / Sutra Meaning
Hindi: यम, नयम, आसन, प्राणायाम, प्रत्याहार, धारणा, ध्यान और समा ध; ये आठ योग के अंग हैं ।
English: Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi; are the eight
limbs of Yoga.
English: Ahimsa, Satya, Asteya(non-stealing), Bramacharya and Aparigraha (non-greed) - are the
five Yamas.
जा तदे शकालसमयानविच्छन्नाः सावर्गभौमा महाव्रतम ् (2.31)
पदच्छे द: जा त , दे श , काल , समय , अनविच्छन्नाः , सावर्गभौमा: , महाव्रतम ् ॥
सूत्राथर्ग / Sutra Meaning
Hindi: उक्त यम जा त, दे श, काल और वशेष नयम की सीमा से र हत और सब अवस्थाओं में पालन करने योग्य महाव्रत
कहलाते हैं ।
English: Those (the five vows) are not limited by class, place, time and circumstance are
extending to all stages constitute the Great Vow.
English: To obstruct thoughts which are inimical to Yoga contrary thoughts should be cultivated.
English: The obstacles to yoga - such as acts of violence and untruth - may be directly created or
indirectly caused or approved; either through avarice, or anger, or ignorance; whether mild, moderate, or
intense, and result is innumerable ignorances and miseries. This is (the method of) thinking the contrary.
अ हंसाप्र त ठायां तत्सिन्नधौ वैरत्यागः (2.35)
पदच्छे द: अ हंसा , प्र त ठायाम ् , तत ् , सिन्नधौ , वैर , त्यागः॥
सूत्राथर्ग / Sutra Meaning
Hindi: अ हंसा की दृढ़ िस्थ त हो जाने पर उस योगी के नकट सब प्राणी वैरभाव त्याग कर दे ते हैं ।
Sanskrit:
English: On being firmly established in non-violence, all beings coming near him cease to be hostile.
English: On being firmly established in truthfulness the Yogi gets the power of attaining for himself and
others the fruits of work without the work
अस्तेयप्र त ठायां सवर्गरत्नोपस्थानम ् (2.37)
पदच्छे द: अस्तेय , प्र त ठायाम ् , सवर्ग , रत्न , उपस्थानम ् ॥
सूत्राथर्ग / Sutra Meaning
Hindi: अस्तेय अथार्गत ् चोरी के अभाव में दृढ़ िस्थ त हो जाने पर उस योगी के सामने सब प्रकार के रत्न प्रकट हो जाते हैं ।
English: On being firmly established in non-stealing all wealth comes to the Yogi.
English: When internal and external cleanliness being established, aversion towards one's own
body is developed and thus aversion extends to contact with others bodies.
