Art Matters
Have you ever been confused by a text or IM? For example, if your friend texts: “Just ate &
now need ER!” Is she joking around or is something really wrong? How would you know?
When people speak to us in person, we understand what they mean because of how
their gestures, facial expressions, and voices change. Without those hints, words are vague.
So, how do most people replace the emotional cues that are missing from textual com-
munication? They use emojis. Consider these two different emojis:
“Just ate & now need ER!”
A Contemporary Approach
Art Matters offers you the ability to explore art in depth, to think about what you see, and
to be drawn into a compelling narrative and interesting stories, like the story about the
emojis. Through Art Matters, you will find that art is a vibrant subject, that art has signifi-
cance, and that art is worth discovering.
Art Matters also introduces you to the wide range of art that is around you. It in-
cludes an enormous assortment of types of art that numerous diverse artists have created
for different people around the world. This tremendous variety will enable you to see how
pervasive and critical art is in your life and how many objects that you see, and even use,
on a day-to-day basis are art—from the emojis you text, to the furniture you sit on, to the
building you live in, to the photographs you see. Throughout this text, you will also be
exposed to numerous contemporary works to help you navigate today’s art world.
Art Matters, furthermore, allows you to experience the dynamic topic of art. In your
course, you may be asked to speak, write, think critically, and form conclusions about
what you see; you may have to formulate your own opinions about previously unseen
works and apply your knowledge to previously unasked questions; and you may need to
speak up for what you believe in and support your point of view, all while collaborating
with classmates who may have similar or opposing beliefs. Art Matters will guide you with
these processes. By asking questions and exposing you to different viewpoints and ideas,
you will learn how to experience art actively and meaningfully.
A Structured Organization
Art Matters is divided into four basic parts:

examples. This contextual approach helps you to understand the different cultures
and introduces you to the universality of art. Also in Part 4, special Connections
sections, located after each chapter, allow you to explore universal themes in
art that connect us all. These sections show you how people from widely different
backgrounds, places, genders, and time periods have much in common.
Beneficial Features
Art Matters offers an array of features that allow you to explore art in depth, think critically
about and apply what you are learning, retain and understand concepts, and assess your
understanding:
• Learning Objectives included on the first page of each chapter identify the con-
tent you should master by the time you have completed the chapter.
• “How Art Matters” stories introduce you to art in every chapter. These in-depth
narratives, like the story of the controversial print and digital materials of the
Beijing Olympics in Chapter 9, are presented at the beginning of chapters, ref-
erenced at points throughout the chapter, and returned to at chapter ends. The
stories allow you to slow down, discover, and reflect about art, as you progress
through the chapter. They also bring art to life; show how art mattered to differ-
ent people in different times and in different ways; and serve as a window into
broader themes about art, society, and life.
• “Practice Art Matters” activities appear several times in each chapter and are
quick applications. Like the activity in Chapter 20 in which you confirm that you
can identify the features of a certain style in a particular image, they make sure
you can use the content you have just read.
• So that you know how to pronounce difficult terms or artists’ names and see defi-
nitions of key words, pronunciation guides and a marginal glossary are placed
right on the page you are reading.
• “Delve Deeper” boxes appear in certain chapters to give you the opportunity to
explore topics in greater depth. These features, like the one in Chapter 3 on addi-
tive color systems used by lighting designers in theatres, enable you to see the ex-
pansive nature of the subject of art and how much more you can explore after you
finish the course.
• “Quick Review” questions throughout each chapter relate to chapter learning
objectives and cover key points from the reading, ensuring that you understand
the material before moving on to a new section.
• “Critical Thinking” questions at the end of each chapter ask you to analyze and
synthesize what you have learned.

• Numerous, author-developed drawings, maps, timelines, diagrams, and
charts help you better grasp complex concepts.
• Image Walkthroughs “walk” you though a number of images in each
chapter, pointing out important parts of artworks with arrows and descrip-
tive labels and encouraging you to break down the different components of
a work of art and understand how to look at an image.
• Extended captions provide you with important facts about the works
of art and suggest main ideas that you can consider as you look at the
illustrations.
• “Artists Matter” photos in the margins of each chapter allow you to see
what some of the artists discussed in the chapter look like, so you can
relate to the creators as people.
• A full interactive eBook gives you access to the same content as the print
book, but with integrated links to multimedia and other resources in
Dashboard.
• Video demonstrations of basic art techniques, animated tours of key
artworks, and documentaries tied to the chapter opening “How Art
Matters” stories provide you with an inside look into the creation of art,
further emphasize why art matters, and allow you to engage with and
answer questions about multimedia content.
• “Explore Art Matters” activities enable you to get involved with art in
a multi-part project, so that you can broadly analyze and apply what you
have learned in the text. They also help you develop key competencies that
you will need in life such as the ability to communicate successfully, think
critically, collaborate as an effective team member, understand social and
ethical responsibilities, and be aware of global and cultural issues.
• Quizzes, assessments, and flashcards test your knowledge and compre-
hension of key ideas and concepts and supply immediate feedback on your
understanding. Flash cards offer recorded pronunciations of terms.
• An annotated bibliography guides you to key outside sources and pro-
vides brief descriptions of these resources, so you can begin research assign-
ments with some basic information.
• A pronunciation guide shows you how to pronounce difficult terms and
artists’ names.
