Most questions are end-of-chapter “Questions” or “Problems” from “College Physics: Explore
and Apply”, by Etkina, Planinsic, and Van Heuvelen, 2nd Edition, ©2019 by Pearson Education,
where the first number is the chapter, and the decimal is either the Question number with a Q in
front, or the Problem number with a P in front. For example, if it says “Etkina 3.Q16”, it means
Chapter 3, Question 16.

Question 14. Earth exerts a 200-N gravitational force on a sled, which slides down a frictionless
hillside that slopes at 37° below the horizontal. What is the magnitude of the force that the
surface of the hill exerts on the sled?
Question 15. A set of fuzzy dice hang from the ceiling of a taxi, as shown below. If the taxi
maintains a constant horizontal acceleration of 6.0 m/s2, what will be the angle at which the dice
hang, relative to the vertical axis?
Question 16. Two boxes are connected to each other
by a string as shown in the figure. The box which has a
gravitational force of 10 N exerted on it slides without
friction on the horizontal table surface. The gravitational
force on the hanging box is 30 N. The pulley is massless
and frictionless and the string has negligible mass. What
is the tension T in the string?

Question 17. A small box of mass m1 is sitting on a board of mass m2 and length L. The
coefficient of kinetic friction between the board and the horizontal floor is μk. The coefficient of
static friction between the board and the box is μs.

At this moment, the board slides to the right along the surface, while the box does not slide on
the board. What is the maximum magnitude of the force F pulling the board so that the box
does not slip on the board?
Question 18. [from Fall 2022 Test 1]

Two blocks of masses m1 = 1.50 kg and m2 = 1.20 kg hang at the

ends of a string that passes over the very light pulley with low
friction bearings shown. When the system is released from rest at
time t = 0, the bottom of m1 is 2.0 m above the floor, and the
bottom of m2 is 1.0 m above the floor. At what time does the first
block hit the floor?

Question 19. [From Fall 2015 Final Exam]

A man is pulling two boxes, one on top of the other, up the ramp shown by pulling on a rope
parallel to the surface of the ramp. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the ramp and the
lower box is 0.444, and the coefficient of static friction between the two boxes is 0.800.

With what force does the man have to pull in

order to move the boxes up the ramp at a
constant speed of 15.0 cm/s?

Question 20. For Question 18 of this problem set, instead of a constant velocity of 15 cm/s,
assume the boxes are accelerating up the ramp. What is the magnitude of the maximum
acceleration the man can pull the boxes up the ramp without having the top box slip off the
bottom box?
