Continuation Words
1. (D). For instance signals continuation by introducing a list of specific examples that illustrate how string
theory addresses a number of questions without nature’s most fundamental constituents and forces. (A), (B),
and (C) can be eliminated since all three are reversal words.
2. (B). In addition signals continuation by introducing a list of samples that illustrate how Robert and Helen
Lynd studied community life. (A), (C), and (D) can be eliminated since they are all reversal words.
3. (C). The sentence begun by the transition introduces a new point supporting the idea that extroverts are
not well suited for travel to Mars. (B) and (D) can be eliminated immediately because they have the same
meaning, and no question can have more than one correct answer. (A) can be eliminated because it does
not restate or clarify the previous point.
4. (A). Subsequently signals that the Montgomery bus boycott occurred after Parks refused to give up her
seat. That makes sense because it is logical to assume that Parks’ decision inspired the boycott. (B), (C),
and (D) do not establish this relationship.
Reversal Words
5. (C). However signals a reversal or contrast to the situation described in the first sentence. The phrase
severe constraints sets up a contrast with the relative independence previously enjoyed by women during the
Homeric period. (A), (B), (D) can be eliminated because they indicate a continuation that is not justified by
the passage.
6. (B). Instead signals a reversal or contrast between the traditional affluent subjects of ukiyo-e art and the
new everyday people whom Hokusai chose to portray. (A), (C), and (D) do not signal this contract.
7. (A). Alternatively signals a contrast between the suburban lifestyle and the Beat lifestyle. (B) and (C) can
be eliminated because they both signal a continuation that is not present in the example. (D) can be eliminated
because it signals a cause-and-effect relationship that is not present in the example.
8. (B)
Cause-and-Effect Words
9. (D). Logically, the fact that Jobs had little tolerance for mediocre people or inferior products was the result
of his exacting standards and painstaking attention detail. (A), (B), (C) don’t establish this cause-and-effect
relationship.
10. (C). Accordingly signals a cause-and-effect relationship between the First Emperor’s fear of death and
his quest for immortality. (A), (B), and (D) do not establish this cause-and-effect relationship.
Transition Placement
11. (A). The commas around the underlined transition tell us that it is necessary to back up and consider the
relationship between the last sentence and the previous sentence. The previous sentence tells us that
chocolate plays an important role in Belgian culture; the last sentence affirms that idea, indicating that
chocolate stores are still found across Belgium. Those are similar ideas, so however and nevertheless can
be eliminated. At any rate means “in any rate,” which does not make sense in this context. That leaves (A),
which correctly indicates that the last sentence is emphasizing a point made in the previous sentence.
No Transition or DELETE Questions
12. (D). Don’t get distracted by the transitional word Therefore in the passage. (D) provides a significant clue
that a transition might not even be required. And in fact, the second sentence does not describe a logical
result of the first sentence, as Therefore and Hence would imply. Furthermore does not make sense either,
since the second sentence introduces a new idea rather than building on the previous one. As a result, the
best option is to delete the transition entirely. (D) is correct.
