In Africa, people celebrate with joy the birth of a new baby. The Pygmies would sing a birth-song
to the child. In Kenya, the mother takes the baby strapped to her back into the thorn enclosure where the
cattle are kept. There, her husband and the village elders wait to give the child his or her name.
In West Africa, after the baby is eight days old, the mother takes the baby for its first walk in the
big, wide world, and friends and family are invited to meet the new baby. In various African nations, they
hold initiation ceremonies for groups of children instead of birthdays. When children reach a certain
designated age, they learn the laws, beliefs, customs, songs and dances of their tribes. Some African tribes
consider that children from nine to twelve are ready to be initiated into the grown up world. They may
have to carry out several tests.
Maasai boys around thirteen years old to seventeen undergo a two-stage initiation. The first stage
lasts about three months. The boys leave their parents' homes, paint their bodies white, and are taught
how to become young warriors. At the end of this stage, they have their heads shaved and they are also
circumcised. At the second stage, the young warriors grow their hair long and live in a camp called a
“manyatta” where they practice hunting the wild animals that might attack the Maasai herds. This stage
may last a few years. When they are ready, they will marry and become owners of large cattle herds like
their fathers. The girls are initiated when they are fourteen or fifteen. They are taught by the older women
about the duties of marriage and how to care for babies. Soon after that they are married and lead a life
similar to that of their mothers.

black holes in an (25) _______ to better understand how they function. Like vacuum cleaners, black holes
will suck up anything (26) _______ crosses their path. The incredible sucking power that black holes
generate comes from gravity. They can quickly swallow up anything including planets, space debris, and
anything else imaginable. Even light cannot escape the (27) _______ of black holes. Since they are able
to pull in light, black holes are nearly impossible to see even with high-powered telescopes. (28)
_______, scientists are able to detect the presence of black holes in space because of their effect on an
observed area.
Black holes can originate in a few ways. One type of black holes occurs when a star comes to the
end of its lifecycle and it dies in a supernova explosion. They can also occur when the mass of a neutron
star becomes so great that it collapses in on itself. Black holes may also occur when several large and

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions 44 to 50.
The Moon has been worshipped by primitive peoples and has inspired humans to create everything
from lunar calendars to love sonnets, but what do we really know about it? The most accepted theory
about the origin of the Moon is that it was formed of the debris from a massive collision with the young
Earth about 4.6 billion years ago. A huge body, perhaps the size of Mars, struck the Earth, throwing out
an immense amount of debris that coalesced and cooled in orbit around the Earth.
The development of Earth is inextricably linked to the moon; the Moon’s gravitational influence
upon the Earth is the primary cause of ocean tides. In fact, the Moon has more than twice the effect upon
the tides than the Sun does. The Moon makes one rotation and completes a revolution around the Earth
every 27 days, 7 hours, and 43 minutes. This synchronous rotation is caused by an uneven distribution of
mass in the Moon (essentially, it is heavier on one side than the other) and has allowed the Earth’s gravity
to keep one side of the Moon permanently facing Earth. It is an average distance from Earth of 384,403
km.
The Moon has no atmosphere; without an atmosphere, the Moon has nothing to protect it from
meteorite impacts, and thus the surface of the Moon is covered with impact craters, both large and small.
The Moon also has no active tectonic or volcanic activity, so the erosive effects of atmospheric
weathering, tectonic shifts, and volcanic upheavals that tend to erase and reform the Earth’s surface
features are not at work on the Moon. In fact, even tiny surface features such as the footprint left by an
astronaut in the lunar soil are likely to last for millions of years, unless obliterated by a chance meteorite
strike. The surface gravity of the Moon is about one-sixth that of the Earth’s. Therefore, a man weighing
82 kilograms on Earth would only weigh 14 kilograms on the Moon.
The geographical features of the Earth most like that of the Moon are, in fact, places such as the
Hawaiian volcanic craters and the huge meteor crater in Arizona. The climate of the Moon is very unlike
either Hawaii or Arizona, however; in fact the temperature on the Moon ranges between 123 degrees C. to
–233 degrees C.
Question 44. What is the passage primarily about?
A. The Moon’s effect upon the Earth. B. The origin of the Moon.
C. A comparison of the Moon and the Earth. D. The Moon and its differences to Earth.
Question 45. According to the passage, the Moon is ______.
A. composed of a few active volcanoes B. older than the Earth
C. protected by a dense atmosphere D. the primary cause of Earth’s ocean tides
Question 46. The word “uneven” is closest in meaning to ______.
A. heavier B. equally distributed C. orderly D. not uniform
Question 47. Why does the author mention “impact craters”?
A. to show the result of the Moon not having an atmosphere.
B. to explain why the Moon has no plant life because of meteorites.
C. to explain the corrosive effects of atmospheric weathering.
D. to show the result of the Moon not having active tectonic or volcanic activity.
Question 48. What does the word "it" in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. the impact B. the atmosphere C. the moon D. the earth
Question 49. A person on the Moon would weigh less than on the Earth because ______.
A. of the composition of lunar soil B. the surface gravity of the Moon is less
C. the Moon has no active tectonic or volcanic activity D. the Moon has no atmosphere
Question 50. Which of the followings is NOT true about the Moon?
A. It is heavier on one side than the other. B. It has a wide range of temperatures.
C. It has less effect upon the tides than the Sun. D. It is unable to protect itself from meteorite attacks.
