An intensive residential course at
The University of Stellenbosch
COURSE OUTLINE
MODULE 1
mixes and surfacing seals. The composition, testing,
specifications (global and local), behaviour, performance
and certification of binders will be covered. The link
between the bitumen and its behaviour in a seal or asphalt,
will form an integral part of the course in. In particular the
course will cover:
- International trends in binder testing and specification
(for unmodified and modified bitumen types), with a
link to performance classification, and
- Binder applications and requirement differences for
LEARNING PROCESS
The delegates will have the chance to immerse themselves in
the subject matter, through a series of lectures that will be
augmented by a number of workshops.
Note: This is an academic course dealing with fundamental
and analytical concepts. It is not a binder-testing training
exercise.
ACADEMIC CREDIT
This course forms part of the University of Stellenbosch
postgraduate programme. It carries fifteen (15) SAQA
credits for academic purposes and/or continuing education
based upon an extensive exercise and written/oral
examination.
LANGUAGE & REGISTRATION
This course will be conducted in English. However,
questions, assignments and examinations can be presented in
either English or Afrikaans.

‘n Intensiewe residensiële kursus by
die Universiteit van Stellenbosch
KURSUSDOELSTELLINGS
Hierdie kursus fokus op die bindstof van asfalt mengsels en
seëls, namelik bitumen. Die bindmiddels se samestelling,
toetse, spesifikasie (globaal en plaaslik), gedrag,
performance en sertifikasie word gedek. Die koppeling
tussen soepel plaveisels→asfalt/seël→bitumen vorm ‘n
intergrale deel van die kursus om die tegnologie in konteks
te plaas in terme van toepassings. Die volgende punte sal
spesifiek gedek word:
 Internasionale tendens van bindstof spesifikasie,
insluitend modifikasie, gekoppel met performance
 Bindstowwe vir HMA en seëls – verskil in vereistes en
ontwikkeling van nuwe toets metodes en prestasie
beoordeling
LEERPROSES
Afgevaardigdes sal die geleentheid hê om verdiepend met
die kursus material vertroud te raak deurdat die reeks lesings
aangevul sal word met tutoriale en werkswinkelsessies.
Let op: Hierdie is ‘n akademiese kursus met fundamentele
en analitiese begrippe. Dis nie ‘n opleidingsoefening oor
toetsmetodes vir bitumen nie

Hierdie kursus vorm deel van die nagraadse kursusprogram
van die Universiteit van Stellenbosch. Dit dra vyftien (15)
SAQA krediete vir akademiese- en/of voortgesette onderwys
doeleindes onderworpe aan eksaminering.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The course is aimed at engineers and technologists who wish
to augment and update their knowledge of bitumen
technology, especially those who work in the field of
bitumen and asphalt (regardless of the sector). A degree or
diploma in Civil Engineering plus several years experience
in pavement engineering is recommended.
COURSE ARRANGEMENTS
To gain full benefit of the course, delegates are required to
work in groups and individually and must be prepared to
work in the evening.
Accommodation should be arranged from the evening
before the course starts at any of the local guesthouses.

Participation is limited
The course fee covers academic notes and activities,
refreshments, lunch and dinner. The fee is subvented by
SANRAL.
Lectures and workshops will be held at the University in
Auditorium S202 in the Civil Engineering Building.
