Reflection on Discussion Questions

“What problems did the author discuss about race and medical practice? Is it okay for

doctors to use race as a short court for clinical diagnosis”

Reflection: Upon reading my peers' responses to this question I learned a lot about the issues in

how racism intertwines with health care treatment. The overarching idea is the problems with

“race-based medicine”. Throughout the responses in the canvas discussions; I have gained

knowledge, that it is unhelpful and problematic to “shortcut” for a medical professional by

basing the treatment off of race. Additionally, using “race-based treatment” undermines the

systemic problems that are underlying issues of health problems such as racism.

“What does the speaker say are the causes of mental illness? What should you do if you

are feeling fear and depression? Why do African man feel it is beneath them to receive care for

mental illness”

Reflection: My reflection upon this discussion question, and watching the TedEx video was that

I learned the stigma that mental health carries in other countries. Moreover, learning about how a

country's cultural and religious backgrounds can stigmatize/demonize someone for struggling

with their own mental health. In addition to that, I have learned resources about what to do if I

were to struggle with my own mental health.

“What are the health consequences of obesity? What are the socioeconomic

consequences of obesity? “Why is it more prevalent in black women? What steps can be taken to

prevent the mortality rate among minorities?”

Reflection: My reflection upon this discussion question and reading upon what my peers wrote

is learning about how the systemic issues such as racism are affecting black women's health.
Moreover, learning how because of this it exacerbates having detrimental health conditions such

as heart disease and obesity. Lastly, throughout these discussions I have learned about solutions

that people can undertake to prevent mortality rates amongst minorities(ie exercising,

community, etc).
