There are three pieces to the applique jar – the jar, lid cover, and the label.

• Trace the reverse pieces from your pattern sheet onto the smooth side of your fusible
applique paper (I use Vliesofix Bondaweb), leaving ¼ inch between each shape.
• Fuse each individual shape onto the wrong side of your chosen fabric.
• Cut out each fused shape along the traced lines. Trace JAM onto the right side of the
label.
• Using your pattern sheet for guidance, peel away the applique paper and fuse the shapes
in position on your background fabric. Blanket stitch aroubnd each shape in two strands
of a thread which matches or enhances the fabric you’ve chosen.
• Chainstitch around the label with the same coilour you used for the applique. Backstitch
JAM with two strands of Dark Brown thread.
• Chain stitch across the lid cover with two strands of the same thread used for the jam jar.

I chose to add a couple of simple lazy daisy flowers as well – one on the lid, and the other beside
the jar.
Once completed I trimmed the block to 5” square before sewing two borders around it. I cut the
fabrics for my borders at 1.5” wide.
The block was then fused to a piece of scrap cotton quilt wadding (this is a great project for
scraps of fabric and wadding!) and hand quilted in the ditch between the borders.
I made a little hanging loop as well and this was attached to the centre top.

A piece of backing fabric was cut, also from my scraps, and laid face down on the block. Sew
around all four sides, leaving a 3” opening for turning out.
Turn right side out, slip stitch the opening closed and press flat.

Hand quilt inside the white centre in a cross hatch design, and then hand quilt ¼” inside the
outer edge to complete your project.

The little jam jar design was inspired by this week’s baking of Jam Drop biscuits/cookies, an old
family favourite.

To make a batch you will require:

125g of room temperature butter

½ cup brown sugar
½ cup castor sugar (or plain white sugar)
1 ¾ cups self raising flour
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
Jam
Method:

Cream the butter and sugars until light and fluffy.

Add the vanilla and the egg.
Fold through the sifted flour.
Roll heaped teaspoons of the dough into balls and place on parchment lined baking trays, at
least 2 inches apart because they will spread.
Use the rounded end of a wooden spoon to press a hole into the centre of each dough ball, but
don’t go all the way through – just press about ½ way down.
Fill the hole with jam (it can sit higher than the hole – we like ours jammy!).
Note: do not press the dough ball flat; it will naturally do this as it bakes.
Bake at 180 c (360 f) for around 14-15 minutes.
Enjoy!!
Set your printer to ‘actual size’ or ‘do not scale’ before printing the pattern sheet.
