MANGO
• An orchard is a United Nations (UN) designated area where the intentional plantation of trees or shrubs is
maintained for food production.
• An orchard is an area of land on which fruit trees are grown.
HISTORY
In 2001, there were 6 to 7 women in a Self-Help Group (SHG), and their economic condition was not
good. They had barren land where millets were grown, but the land was unproductive and lacked
water, resulting in low yields. With the help of NGOs, the group started a mango orchard plantation.
THE PROGRAM WAS STARTED
FIRSTLY , IN 2009 THE PLANTATION WAS STARTED WHICH MANGO PLANTATION WAS DONE IN 17 ACRE
OF LAND BY INCLUDING 22 FAMILIES. THE FIRST WELL WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 2009, AND THEN AN
ADDITIONAL 4 TO 5 WELLS WERE MADE IN 2011-2012. ALONG WITH THE WELLS, LOOSE BOULDERS
WERE ALSO PLACED TO MAINTAIN THE GROUND LEVEL.
OBSERVATION
WATER CONSERVATION
LOOSE BOULDERS-
loose boulder Loose stone check dams The main objectives for these dams are to control channel
erosion along the gully bed and to stop waterfall erosion by stabilising gully heads.
TRENCHES
Field trenches increase precipitation harvesting by breaking the slope of the ground and therefore reducing
the velocity of water runoff. By decreasing runoff, they enhance water infiltration and prevent soil erosion.
Trenches can be seen as an extended practice of ploughing fields.

CONCLUSION
Engaging in mango orchard planting can bring about several benefits, including enhancing soil health, conserving
water resources, and promoting biodiversity. The cultivation of mango orchards contributes to the overall well-being
of the ecosystem by improving soil fertility, reducing erosion, and creating habitats for various plant and animal
species.
