1.Yes / No Questions
These are questions for which the answer is YES or NO.

AUXILIARY VERBS
[Do/Does/Did/Have/Has/Had/Will]
BE Subject Verb ...
[Is/Are/Am/Was/Were]
MODALS
[Can/May/Should/Must]

Examples:
• Are they going to school today?
• Do you want to use the telephone?
• Was Mary sick yesterday?
• Have you seen the movie before?
• Can you drive a truck?
• Will she come to school tomorrow?

2. Information Questions
These are questions for which the answer is
more than yes or no; there must be some
information in the answer.

There are three different rules in this part:


A. WHO or WHAT in subject questions
B. WHOM or WHAT in complement questions
C. WHEN, WHERE, HOW and WHY questions

A. WHO and WHAT in subject questions
A subject question is one in which the subject is unknown.

WHO/WHAT + verb + complement/object + (modifier)?

Examples:
• Who opened the door? [Someone opened the door]

• What happened last night? [Something happened last night]

B. WHOM or WHAT in complement questions
A complement question is one in which the complement is unknown.

WHOM/WHAT + auxiliary + subject + verb + (modifier)?

Examples:
• Whom does Ahmad know from Venezuela?
Ahmad knows someone from Venezuela.
• What did George buy at the store?
George bought something at the store.

C. WHEN, WHERE, HOW and WHY questions
These questions are formed the same as complement questions

WHEN/WHERE/WHY/HOW + auxiliary + subject + verb


+(complement) + (modifier)?

Examples:
• When did John move to London?
John moved to London last year.
• Where does Jamil live?
Jamil lives in Westfield.
• Why did Kim leave so early?
Kim left so early because he had an appointment.
• How did Maria get to school yesterday?

3. Embedded Questions
An embedded question is one which is included in a sentence or
another question. The word order is NOT that of typical questions
except for subject questions.
NOTE:
There must NOT be an auxiliary [do/does/did] between the question
word and the subject in an embedded question.

Examples:
Q : Where will the meeting take place?
EQ : We haven't ascertained where the meeting will take place.

Q: Why did the plane land at the wrong airport?


EQ: The authorities cannot figure out why the plane landed at the

Other examples of Embedded Questions
Q : What is he doing?
EQ: I wonder what he is doing.

Q: Where is she?
EQ: Do you know where she is?

Q: Is he a doctor?
EQ: I want to know if he is a doctor.

Q: How often does the bus run at night?


EQ: Do you know how often the bus runs at night?

Q: Where did he go?

4. Tag Questions
In a tag question, the speaker makes a statement, but it's not
completely certain of the truth, so he or she uses a tag question
to verify the precious statement.

Examples:
• There are only twenty-eight days in February, aren't there?
• It's raining now, isn't it?
• The boys don't have class tomorrow, do they?
• Nothing happened last night, did it?

Answer: Jill and Joe have been to Mexico, haven't they?
