Literature Review (approx. 250 Words) –

With the rise in the amount of social connectivity in furtherance to the freedom of the internet
& mass commercialization of the entertainment industry, a path has been paved for the
availability of unconventional and creative commercial goods and services to varied
consumers throughout the globe. There seems to be a huge deal of consumers tapping into the
products, which itself are a by-product or a modification/altercation of an already existing
product. Likewise, the demand for customized sneakers has penetrated the market due its
appealing designs, pop culture references and enthusiastic collectors. One such shoe, is the
‘Satan Shoe’ by the MSCHF Product Studio Inc. which is a store-bought Nike AIR MAX 97
customized into a demonic themed shoe with 666 pairs bought purposefully, a bronze
pentagram, upside down cross, sole filled with red ink containing a drop of human blood and
biblical reference of LUKE 10:18. The pair was dropped on the heels of its predecessor the
Jesus Shoe, which got much acclaim. On the contrary the Satan Shoe’s targeted audience
started calling out Nike for associating and perhaps getting involved in making of such a
shoe, for which Nike filed a suit for Trademark infringement, False designation of origin and
Trademark dilution as Nike neither released nor endorsed the shoe. The suit ended up as
being a restraining order put out by the judge against MSCHF telling them to recall the
products. Subsequently, an out-of-the court settlement took place between the two.
