Studying and getting a degree are two important elements in the student's life, and they
are often confronted with crucial decisions regarding the university choice and where they
should study. All of these criteria may influence the quality of the degree and the future plans;
moreover, it is essential to analyze certain aspects which lead to a suitable choice. Studying at
home or studying abroad is a challenging choice to make after high school; students must
compare and contrast their options in terms of academic environment, financial needs and future
prospects.
The first aspect to take into consideration when making the choice is the academic
environment. To start with, not only studying at home but also studying abroad can offer student
a great educational environment, such as facilities and libraries. Both have diverse majors that
the student can do in person, but the difference is in North America some majors are online while
in Africa they are not depending on the technology needs. Another difference between studying
at home and studying abroad is the type of degree available such as diploma, certificate, degree,
post-degree; furthermore this difference depends on the socio-economic environment where the
university is. To sum up, the academic environment is the first step of the check-list students
should follow.
The second major aspect to consider is the financial situation. Both studying at home and
studying abroad have school fees, but fees are more expensive for students who prefer studying
abroad than studying at home. For example, in Canada students who have a permanent resident
status pay less than international students. Students have to focus on the cost of living for both,
but the cost of living may be more expensive for studying abroad than studying at home because
this factor is not the same throughout the world. People who choose studying abroad may need
some supplies such as books, laptops, computer lab while people who study at home do not need
this kind of supplies. In short, students have to compare the financial situation for both studying
at home and studying abroad before making a choice.
