PRELIMS
CONFIDENTIALITY

Confidentiality is a critical aspect of nursing practice. It refers to the safeguarding of

private or sensitive information from being accessed or disclosed to unauthorized

individuals or parties. In nursing, confidentiality is essential in building trust with patients

and preserving their privacy.

One of the significant benefits of maintaining confidentiality in nursing is that it promotes

effective communication and trust between the patient and the healthcare team.

Patients are more likely to share sensitive information when they trust that their

information will be kept confidential. This information is vital in providing quality care and

ensuring positive patient outcomes.

Additionally, confidentiality is required by law and regulatory bodies to protect patient

privacy. Healthcare professionals who violate confidentiality can face legal and

regulatory penalties, which can damage their professional reputation and affect their

ability to practice.

Confidentiality is also essential in promoting ethical nursing practice. Nurses have a

duty to maintain confidentiality, and violating this duty can damage their relationship

with patients, colleagues, and the healthcare system as a whole.

Overall, confidentiality in nursing is critical for building trust with patients, preserving

patient privacy, and promoting ethical nursing practice. It is also required by law and

regulatory bodies to protect patient privacy. By maintaining confidentiality, nurses can

provide quality care and ensure positive patient outcomes, while also upholding their

professional and ethical responsibilities
