Apo Whang-Od, a 106-year-old Filipino tattoo artist from Buscalan, Philippines, is renowned as

the last mambabatok, or traditional Kalinga tattoo artist. She learned the art of tattooing at the
age of 16 under her father's mentorship and has since become famous for her hand-tapped
tattoos using a soot-stained thorn. Whang-Od's intricate designs, which include symbols
representing various aspects of life, have attracted thousands of visitors from around the world
to her remote village.

Despite the modernization that has touched Buscalan, Whang-Od remains dedicated to
preserving and passing on the tradition of batok, or traditional tattooing. She has trained her
grandniece, Grace Palicas, and other young relatives in the art, ensuring that the practice
continues to thrive. Whang-Od's influence extends beyond the Philippines, inspiring others to
revive and preserve indigenous tattooing practices worldwide. Her story embodies the resilience
of traditional cultures in the face of modernization and serves as a reminder of the importance of
preserving cultural heritage for future generations. Whang-Od's global recognition was solidified
when she was featured in international publications like Vogue, further highlighting her impact
on the world stage. In addition to her global impact, Whang-Od's contributions to Kalinga society
are significant, as her tattoos symbolize strength, courage, and honor for the community,
preserving and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Kalinga people.
