Chapter 1

Introduction
This chapter presents some aspects that underline the topic of the research.

It includes the background of the study, statement of the problem, Theoretical/

Conceptual Framework,Assumptions and hypothesis, scope and delimitation and

Defination of Terms.

Background of the Study

Reading is a fudamental skill that impacts every aspect of a child’s academic success

And is akey component for aquality of life. It can set a solid foundation for all future

Success. However, if bot mastered at an early age, it can cause frustration and anxiety

In a child.

The nature of motivation is vital in improving student learning outcomes and it is

fudamental in the academic success of students. Three ar two types of motivation, the

intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The student could be intrinsically motivated, they do

something they enjoy or love even if there is no reward for it. While students who are

extrinsically motivated do something even if they do not enjoy in hopes of earning a

reward. Thus, motivation is associated with student learning and achievement.

However, achieving academic success could involve distractions such as mobile

Phones, tablets, and desktop computers. Especially in this century, wherein technology

becomes an essential part of humans; lives. It became undeniably helpful to the society;

it makes the lives of people easier and everything more advanced. On the other hand,

it has been negatively affecting society from the very first technological advances

through the present day, what more on education of the younger learners. Technology

has consumed people’s lives, making them have become heavily reliant on their

devices. Example of this is from teenagers becoming addicted to their phones, and

making the people of the society lazy. Making everything instant for them, from one

click, their necessities would already be in front of them. Parents have introduced

gadgets to their children at young age that could cause physical and mental damage

to children or even negative habits like being violent or being unsociable. This an

unhealthy way of living life that has become normalized due to devices that inhabit

their homes, pockets, and bodies.

In spite of technology and gadgets having negative effects on the society, the usage

of mobile technologies for academic learning become popular. As it had a positive

impact on the quality of education delivered. Digital Books make the learning process

more Interactive and engaging, enhancing overall learning experience. It helps the

students Learn better and faster. An electronic book, also known as an e-book or eBook,

is a book publication made available in digital from, consisting of text, images, or both,

readable on the flat-panel display od computers or other electronic devices. Although

sometimes defined as “an electronic version of a printed book”, some e-books exist

without a printed equivalent.

With eBooks at hand, students can engage more in reading books and studying their

lessons, an e-book can be an effective learning tool that can gain student interest and

motivate them to improve their academic skills. It is also appealing to students due to

its convenience and low cost than traditional paper-based book.

The researchers conducted this study to determine the impact of eBooks on the

academic motivation of high school students of St. Jude College Dasmarinas Cavite.
