EARWORMS
An earworm is a song which repeats itself in our mind again and again. Most of us get

I'm in the Borneo rainforest right now, traveling around the world, and I'm really lucky
to be staying with a Penan tribe family.
This family is nomadic; they move from place to place because they rely on the rainforest
for everything they need to live. They hunt animals, gather food from the forest. At every
stop, they set up a new camp and build small huts that they live in for a few months.
Then they pack away their few possessions and move off to a new site in the jungle. But
things are changing. Now, only about 200 Penan people still move around. The rest have
moved to villages and towns because the forest is disappearing, and their old way of life
is disappearing with it.
In Penan culture, everyone helps one another and shares what they have. Close
relationships between members of the tribe are made stronger by preparing and sharing
food. I've been invited to help cook the breakfast. I think that means they like me. All
the members of the family are gathering ingredients for the meal. Rice with fresh green
vegetables is a typical breakfast for the Penan. I’m just grateful that we're not having the
frogs which they tell me is their other favourite breakfast dish!

 The food is simple, but I don't think l've ever tasted anything this delicious. As we eat,
I realise that this Penan family is different to almost everyone else I've met on my
travels. I've met different people and stayed at lots of places but I've never felt as
welcome as I do here in the rainforest. It's like I'm a member of their family. These
people have almost nothing, but they are willing to share almost everything.
