Modelling a solar system

Supervisor: Dr Taoyang Wu
Subjects
Data science Graphics and games Software development

Description
The aim of this project is to develop a 3D animation orbital model for a solar system, using our
beloved Sun solar system as a prototype but should be easily adaptable to other solar systems (e.g.
exoplanets orbiting around stars other than the Sun). The basic model aims for predicting/illustrating
the relative positions and motions of the planets (and moons) in the Solar System, including the orbit
of an object in the solar system relative to a chosen object (e.g. the Sun or the Earth) as the
observation point (e.g. the origin of a Cartesian coordinate system). A better model may include the
orbits of an object in the system relative to a chosen point in one planet (e.g. the Earth) during a
particular time period. More advanced models should allow the prediction of an object from the
observations (e.g. inferring the planet according to its position in the sky). Additional features of the
project could include a graphical user interface (GUI), a smartphone application etc.

Requirements
Good programming skills (Python or Java)
Good software engineering skills
Good 3D modelling skills (e.g. Blender)
No prior physics knowledge is required
