Word Problems
We have been using the RUCSAC method to help us
solve word problems. Work through these
questions, showing your working out.
1. 17 children were in the classroom. 8 more joined them. How
many children were in the classroom altogether?
2. Mrs Street made 37 school dinners. 15 children collected their
meals. How many were left?
3. Ben was 45cm tall he grew 28cm taller. How tall is Ben now?
4. Miss Fernley bought 20 cakes to share with Year 3. She shared
them equally between 4 plates. How many cakes were on each
plate?
5. My jigsaw had 36 pieces. I lost 28 of them. How many pieces
did I have left?
6. There were 5 tables in the classroom. Each table could had 5
chairs. How many chairs were in the classroom?
7. I bought a new pen for 45p. How much change should I get
from a £1 coin?
8. Each class has 3 playground balls. If there are 7 classes in the
school, how many playground balls are there?
